Ngā mihi nui ki a koutou katoa

It is great to shake off some of the restrictions from Alert Level 2. Hope-fully, you received Tuesday’s update on what Level 1 looks like at Mac-kenzie College. If not, check out the update on our Facebook page. Last week, the Board had our first in-person meeting since the lockdown. Many things were discussed, and we have kicked a number of major pro-jects back into action including Cottage Meetings and a continuation of our next 10 Year Property (building) planning. Cottage Meetings are our Community Consultation process. Here we open up discussions about what our community considers to be high pri-orities for our students. These meetings are still in the developmental phase, but we are looking at having Fairlie and Tekapo based meetings in Term 3. More details will follow!

We are also working with our project managers to plan the next 5 and 10 years of building upgrades at Mackenzie College. For more details, see the article later in this newsletter.

Kia pai tō rā whakatā. Have a great weekend.

As mentioned in the Principal’s Message, our Board is currently busy working with our Project Manag-er and the Ministry of Education to prioritise building upgrade plans for the next 5 and 10 years.

This round of projects has been given a financial boost by the SIP (School Improvement Package) which is highly appreciated.

We have a range of high priority projects that are currently being negotiated including upgrades of the Gym changing rooms, rooms 7-10, roofing, girls B-Block toilets, Admin toilets, drainage, driveways, ex-ternal lighting, Hall toilets, heating replacement/upgrades and more!

We will keep you informed as this process continues. Hopefully, we will have the first of these projects underway at the end of this year or the beginning of 2021!

New Zealand’s leading authority on safeguarding children online is presenting three workshops for our students next Wednesday (17 June). We also invite all parents and members of the community to a community presentation at 7pm in the Mackenzie Community Centre (Fairlie). In John’s words: “Now, more than ever before, empathy, the ability to think about how another person is feeling, should

be the foundation upon which we educate children on matters of judgement whether in the home, in

the school or in the community" .

Free Dental Care for Children including special information regarding Yr 8 students

• One of our Community Dental Service mobiles will be visiting your school soon.

• We will be aiming to see that all children enrolled with the Community Dental Service have their dental care

in the dental mobile while it is here.

• Year 8 students: all Year 8 students enrolled with the Community Dental Services are transferred from the

Community Dental Service to a FREE private dentist from Year 9 until their 18th birthday. To help with this

transition please ensure you have informed your child of their family dentist (not orthodontist). This will ena-

ble us to transfer your child onto the correct dentist for Year 9 onwards. More information will be sent home

after their Year 8 check up.

• To do this we will be asking the school to provide your child’s name, address and your contact information.

• The dental therapist will not only be checking the children’s teeth but will also x-ray, clean and apply protec-

tive fluoride treatments and / or fissure sealants (coating put on teeth to prevent decay) if required.

• If your child requires further dental care such as fillings they will bring home a “Care Plan” which will explain

what dental care is required.

• When you receive the ‘Care Plan’ please contact our Call Centre as soon as possible as you will need to ar-

range a time to bring your child to one of our Community Clinics for this dental treatment.

To contact our Call Centre: phone 0800 846 983 or email [email protected]

This winter there is a chance that snow may affect the running of the school. All bus students have re-ceived a letter titled Adverse Weather Bus Procedures which details the school’s response to snow and gale-force wind. Here is an outline of the school’s response to adverse weather for all students of the College:

1. The school is notified by concerned citizens about road conditions in their area. Contact our Bus Controller, Michelle on 027 421 8900 or Principal, Jason on 027 329 8919. The earlier we get the information the better.

2. If school is already in progress, a decision is made in consultation with all Fairlie schools and buses may be called in early.

3. Parents of bus students are immediately notified by the school office and by the phone tree. A message is also sent to parents of all students via SMS (text message), Facebook notifications and on the school website.

4. Bus students whose parents have been successfully contacted by the school office are re-leased as each bus arrives.

5. Fairlie based students remain at school until the end of the school day unless collected by a caregiver.

Please note that no child will be sent home in adverse weather conditions unless specific permission has been obtained by a caregiver. Also, students can only be collected by a registered caregiver unless spe-cific permission has been obtained for another person to pick them up. Students cannot give permission for other families to drive them home.

Please contact the office if you require a replacement copy of the Adverse Weather Bus Procedures and associated phone tree. School closure before the start of the school day will be notified via phone tree (bus students only), SMS (text), Facebook, the College website and by radio (The Breeze FM).

I just thought I would give a quick update on “Oof Hearted”, the Mackenzie College students who are

the 2019 South Island EPro8 Technology Challenge champions.

After we beat the other schools at the University of Canterbury to claim the top spot, we finally, due to

lockdown etc, received our EPro8 kit with $1600 of contents. This will give all Mackenzie College stu-

dents who want to take part in future EPro8 competitions a chance to practice before we compete.

Hopefully this will mean more success in the coming years.

This is a fantastic opportunity; students compete in age categories from Year 5 up to Year 13. If you

want more information go to the EPro8 website, Uncle Google will give you the address.

If you would like to look at the kit to see what it's all about, contact me or the school and we can ar-

range this and maybe even talk to the 2019 EPro8 National Champions.

Student Planners Student Planners—This Fortnight

The manufacturer of your children’s planners produces some items for parents to consider as they help

their child make good use of their planner. Here is an item that relates to what’s in the planners over

the coming fortnight:

Grit = passion + long term persistence + self-regulation. It is that X-factor of resilience which enables us

to push through when we think we can’t.

Grit and social-connectedness are the two most powerful predictors of student success. Also, having

the capability to stay focused on the job at hand and ignore distractions is an important skill to cultivate

in students to ensure their personal and academic growth.

Using the strengths leadership, bravery, self-regulation and perspective will connect them with the mo-

ment, enabling them to do the right thing and do the thing right.

Teaching students the difference between activity and action will raise their self-awareness of when

they involved in action or activity. Activity is being involved in things with little meaning and purpose.

Action is being decisive with things that matter and following through with meaning and purpose.

When students show grit, they are full of action. Other ingredients which contribute to having grit in-

clude believing that other people matter and having a higher purpose in life to make a positive differ-

ence. Also, understanding that the right thing to do is nearly always the hard thing to do and then being

prepared to do it.

3 Day Learning Event

At assembly on Wednesday, students were given notices outlining the options available in week 2 Term 3 for 3DLE.

Students are to choose 3 options and return the signed notice to school by Tuesday 16th June. The sooner this notice is returned, the better the chance that students will get one of their top choices.

If you have any questions please contact the school.
