Newsletter No 16 June 26th, 2017 Principals chat Welcome to the last week of what feels like a very long term!! It has certainly been a very busy term. Twice a year every child receives a portfolio, containing samples of learning, and also a progress report. Principal’s chat

Welcome to the last week of what feels like a very long term!! It has

certainly been a very busy term.

Twice a year every child receives a portfolio, containing samples of

learning, and also a progress report. The portfolio and report

include:

A page reporting academic achievement in a range of domains in relation to the Victorian curriculum. It will indicate where your child is in relation to the standards i.e. at standard, above standard, well below standard etc. This is the page with the dots on it.

A teacher comment.

A comment from our specialists teachers – Visual Arts, Performing Arts and LOTE (Japanese).

A comment from the Principal.

A checklist of skills in a range of academic areas. This is a representative list only and does not cover everything. The checklists indicate what your child has achieved and areas for future learning and improvement.

A checklist of “Ready To Learn” indicators which indicate achievement in relation to personal and interpersonal skills that we consider to be very important.

Samples of your child’s work throughout the semester which is intended as evidence to back up what the other parts of the report say about progress.

A student reflection in relation to their learning.

A section for parent reflections which parents need to complete before retuning the portfolio to school.

When completing the checklist of skills all students are assessed at the

appropriate academic level for them. Below is an indication of the

expected level for each grade level.

Grade Prep - Foundation

Grade 1 - Level 1

Grade 2 - Level 2 Grade 3 - Level 3

Grade 4 - Level 4

Grade 5 - Level 5

Grade 6 - Level 6

At the top of the checklist of skills it will indicate the Victorian

curriculum level your child is being assessed at. It is important to

note that some students are assessed above or below the expected

level depending on their academic level and their individual

learning needs.

In Mathematics we use a topic based approach where we work on three

topics per term, spending three weeks on each topic, and complete pre

and post testing. Therefore, only six of our twelve topics for the year

have been covered and we thought that it was important to highlight that

some areas of mathematics are yet to be taught.

Your child’s portfolio and report will be sent home with your child

tomorrow. Please take the time to read through it with your child

and celebrate their achievements. If you could complete the parent

reflections section of the portfolio that would be great. After the school

holidays, we require the portfolio to be returned along with the

checklists. The Semester 1 report (with the dots) is intended for you

to keep, so you can take it out of the portfolio.

At the end of the year you will receive the portfolio again with additional

samples for the rest of the year, the completed checklists and the second

semester report. At this time, you will be able to keep all of this as a

record of your child’s year.

Parent teacher interviews will be scheduled in term 3 to follow up

school reports. If you have any questions or would like to discuss your

child’s report sooner, then please contact your child’s teacher.

Enjoy reading the portfolios and reports - the teachers certainly put a lot

of hard work into ensuring that they are comprehensive and

individualised.

Enjoy the rest of the week and I hope that you all have a relaxing break – see you next term.

Warm regards,

Jodie

The Holiday Intensive Swimming Program (HISP) is a concentrated swimming and water safety program conducted over five consecutive days. The intensive nature of the swimming program allows for a greater opportunity for consolidation of swimming and water safety skills and progression. Providing swimming lessons during the school holiday period provides a great alternative to swimming lessons throughout the term for families with busy schedules. For those already enrolled into the Castlemaine Fitness Swim and Survive, this program will assist you in consolidating skills you need to complete to achieve that next level, or to kick start your progress into a new level.
