SCHOOLFounded in 1951, Bishop O’Dowd High School (O’Dowd) is a fully accredited, Catholic collegepreparatory school with a challenging academic program. In a culturally rich community, O’Dowddevelops healthy young people by providing them with deep and broad opportunities to growacademically, spiritually, socially and across interest areas. The present enrollment is 1,175.

STUDENTSThe O’Dowd community represents the multi-cultural and socioeconomically diverse populationof the San Francisco Bay Area, contributing to the richness of the O’Dowd experience. The currentcomposition is: 22% African American, 14% Asian, 42% Euro-American, 14% Latino and 10%other. More than 30% of O’Dowd students receive nearly $3 million in financial aid annually.

MISSIONBishop O’Dowd High School is owned and operated by the Diocese of Oakland and strives to develop young men and women of competence, conscience, and compassion through an integrated academic, spiritual, and extra-curricular program. We seek to develop leaders of influence who are loving, open to growth, religious, intellectually competent, and skilled leaders committed to justice and peace. The core values as outlined in our charism reinforce our continual desire to deepen our Catholic identity.

CURRICULUMDelivered experientially and through interactive classroom activities, seminars, college-style lecturesand online courses, O’Dowd offers a broad and deep college-preparatory curriculum. Traditionalforms of learning integrate with the use of state of the art technology. These required coursescombine with electives, totaling 240 credits, for graduation:

O’Dowd offers offers sixteen AP courses and an additional eleven honors courses in six subjects:mathematics, English, world languages, chemistry, physics, and history.

CO-CURRICULAR PROGRAMSStudent-run clubs, events and activities build leadership skills and support a diverse range of studentinterests. These include: 61 competitive teams across 15 sports, 45+ student-led clubs, four musicalgroups and a theater arts program. Students extend their service learning participation beyondthe 100-hour requirement through Campus Ministry community volunteer programs and retreat programs.

The Principal leads the faculty, staff, students and parents in all aspects of the Bishop O’Dowd High School Catholic college preparatory program to ensure the highest quality of spiritual, social, physical and intellectual outcomes for every student. The Principal oversees all phases of policy development related to academics and student life while ensuring the implementation of the school’s mission and core values. As chief operating officer, the Principal is responsible for the successful day-to-day operation of the school as accomplished through the effective delegation of responsibilities to administrators, faculty and staff.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS • The Principal reports directly to the President. The Principal is appointed, supervised, evaluated and

dismissed by the President. The Principal is responsible to the Diocese of Oakland through the Superintendent of Catholic Schools in areas of responsibility designated by the Department of Catholic Schools.

• The Principal appoints, supervises, evaluates and dismisses the Assistant Principals, other administrators, teachers and all operational staff in consultation with the President.

MEMBERSHIPS The Principal is a member of the following: Executive Council; Directors’ Council (Chair); Academic Council; Academic and Discipline Review Board; Admissions and Financial Aid Committee; WCEA/WASC Accreditation Team; the Association of Secondary School Principals of the Diocese of Oakland; the Western Alameda Athletic Conference Board of Managers and other committees as assigned by the President.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES Faith Community

• Upholds and models a spiritual and moral code which is consistent with the teachings of the Roman Catholic Church and the core values of Bishop O’Dowd High School.

• Monitors the integration of the mission and Catholic identity into all facets of the teaching-learning process and activities of the school.

• Ensures the development and enhancement of the faith community through direct involvement in staff retreats, student retreats, service programs, the religion program and liturgies.

Academics and Staff Relations

• Serves as the overall academic leader of the school and maintains a strategic vision reflecting current trends in secondary education, higher education and business.

• Employs, assigns, supervises, evaluates and dismisses certified and specified non-certified staff. • Monitors the development of all instructional programs in collaboration with the Assistant Principals,

the Chief Information Officer and Academic Council; ensures compliance with Diocesan, WCEA/WASC and state academic requirements.

• Facilitates regular faculty meetings and assists in developing professional development in-services with the Assistant Principals.

• Regularly updates the employee handbook in conjunction with the Human Resource officers of the school and the Diocese of Oakland.

• Oversees the generation of a master schedule for the faculty and students. • Regularly seeks information about staff and student well-being in order to monitor the school’s social

climate. • Ensures regular communication with teachers, parents and the community regarding the school’s

programs. Student Life

• Participates in the hiring and dismissal of all extra-curricular personnel in consultation with the Assistant Principal, Director of Student Activities and Athletic Director.

• Monitors the effectiveness and success of the following programs though regular meetings with the Directors and Deans: counseling, sustainability, international students and discipline.

• Regularly updates the student/parent handbook. • Oversees campus safety, security and emergency preparedness planning through the Deans of

Students and the Director of Security. • Oversees planning and coordination of all interscholastic sports with the Assistant Principal and

Athletic Directors to ensure the development and implementation of policy; represents the school at the athletic league and section Boards of Managers.

• Regularly attends and/or supervises school events as required. • Monitors the maintenance of student records through the Office of the Registrar and the database

manager. Finances and Advancement

• Participates in the preparation of the annual school budget with the Chief Financial Officer and President.

• Monitors plant maintenance and facility improvements though the Director of Facilities. • Ensures compliance with business policies and procedures in all academic, co-curricular and extra-

curricular activity programs. • Actively supports all advancement, admission and marketing activities of the school. • Participates in regular reporting of all plans and progress to the various constituencies of the school in

conjunction with the President.

Board Relations

• Implements Board policy regarding the school’s mission as related to academics and student life. • Reports to the Board on academic and student life at the request of the President. • Participates in the leadership and implementation of long-range strategic planning and other planning
