Principal’s News

P&C AGM

Thank you to all the new and

continuing P&C members that were

able to make the AGM on Monday

night. I would like to congratulate our Executive Team

for 2019 on taking up positions. Our Executive

Members for this year are: Donald Maskall (President),

Angela Bell (Vice President), Lyn O’Keefe (Treasurer)

and Alicia Radecker (Secretary).

I would like to acknowledge the many years that Mal

Dodt has put into the One Mile P&C. Mal decided not

to put his hand up this year as he is also the President

of Gympie High’s P&C and has to run his business as

well. Thanks for all your work and energy Mal you will

be missed.

Deputy Director General Visit

Next Friday the 29th March we will be hosting Mr. Peter

Kelly who was appointed Deputy Director General at

the beginning of Term 4 last year. It will be a great

opportunity to show some of the great things that

happen every day here at One Mile SS. After Peter

spends the morning with us he will be heading out to

Mary Valley State College.

Cross Country

A reminder that Cross Country will be next Thursday

the 28th

of March first thing in the morning. Students

have been walking the course with Mr Martin in PE this

week in preparation. It has also been great to see the

number of students participating in the 12 minute run

on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday Mornings.

Attendance

Congratulations to Year 6 for achieving an amazing

97.1% attendance for last week. Well done also to

Year 4 for achieving our target with an impressive 96.1%

Mr Stuart Bell

From the Deputy’s Desk OMSS 150th Committee

Parents are invited to attend the

150th Committee Meeting at 3:10pm

Monday (25th March) in the Staffroom. The P & C

have already set the date (Saturday 14th September).

Please come along to share ideas and support our

school to make this a celebration to remember!

Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL)

Our expectation this week is I keep my hands, feet

and other objects to myself. Each year level also

has their goal which has been determined by the type

of incidents that year level is seeing. Please ask your

child/ren about the expectation.

Waste Education with Elli

Next week, all classes will receive a Waste Education

lesson with Elli to further our knowledge. The students

have taken an active role in all our activities to date

and are always coming up with innovative ideas on

how we can help our environment.

Have a great week!

Curriculum Corner Report Cards

Last year we began a review of our current report card system. This review asked for feedback from parents and staff about how our report cards work and how they inform parents and caregivers. Please watch this space for more information about how our new reporting will change from recent years.

One of the biggest responses from parent’s feedback was. “Why do the different year levels have a different achievement level/ rating?

Below you will see that although the terms are different the scale is still a 5 point scale of achievement. Although the language is different essentially they mean the same thing. This system is mandated by the Education Department and we can’t change it.

Prep

Year 1- 2

Year 3-6

You can see that although the language used is different the same 5 point scale exists in all Levels of achievement. (N is used in all achievement levels.)

Over the next few newsletters I will attempt to answer some of the other questions raised by parents from our review.

We are looking forward to our new report cards which will allow better communication between the school and parents.

Playgroup

Thank you to all of those families that joined us on Thursday for Playgroup. Don’t forget Playgroup is free and happens every week. Check our flyer in the newsletter below.

Library and Take Home Reader Borrowing

Page 4: PRINCIPAL: MR STUART BELL - One Mile State School · Tuck Shop News Volunteers Needed! Please ask mum or dad if they can spare some of their precious time to help in the Tuck Shop

Borrowing books from the Resource Centre and take home readers happens every week. Please ensure that our wonderful resources are kept in good condition by providing a waterproof bag for borrowing. It’s also worthwhile discussing with children the right way to handle books to ensure they stay safe.

Have a great week

Music Notes

We've been busy in the music room! Don't forget the order of events each week!

Monday - Marimba Maestro's

Tuesday - Senior Choir

Wednesday - Junior Choir

Thursday - Rock Band 'O.M.G'

These all take place at first break during play time.

Marimba Maestro's are coming along swimmingly! Jonathon, Amaya, Isaac and Abbi are working on 2 pieces called Bridge Creek and Tong Gu Ra Mi (Korean for 'Circle'). I'm also keen to get them to compose their very own Marimba Composition!

Senior Choir! Yay! We have a Senior Choir this year!

😊 We are working on 3 main pieces at the moment.

The Last Anzac (Junior Choir is also learning this one), Goodbye Captain, and The Wild Mountainside. Senior Choir students have been organised into Soprano and Alto parts and they are working hard at singing together in perfect harmony! A note to Senior Choir - feel free to bring in a USB so that Mrs Airey can put your part (Soprano or Alto and the backing tracks)

Page 5: PRINCIPAL: MR STUART BELL - One Mile State School · Tuck Shop News Volunteers Needed! Please ask mum or dad if they can spare some of their precious time to help in the Tuck Shop

from the songs we are learning onto your USB and you

can take them home and practice. 😊

Junior Choir! Attendance at Junior Choir fluctuates from week to week... We have several very diligent Junior Choir members who consistently attend every single week and they should be so proud of how they are sounding! Stellar effort! We are working on The Last Anzac, I Like the Flowers, and No One Like You. Please remind your child/ren that Junior Choir is supposed to be a year long commitment (I'd settle for a

whole semester commitment) 😉 and if too many

practices are missed students won't know the songs we are learning well enough and will be unable to participate in performances on parade etc.

Rock Band! O.M.G. (One Mile Gold) are working on 4 songs at the moment: Shotgun, See you Again, In the Air Tonight, and Land Down Under and we have many more we can't wait to work on!

These are a keen bunch of young musicians who love music just about as much as Mrs Airey does and that's A LOT!!! I love working with ALL our One Mile mini-muso's! Your dedication and commitment to making music fills me with pride to be a part of your musical

journey! Keep making music everyone! 😊

See you in the music room!

Mrs Kate Airey 😊

Every Thursday

Program Runs 9am – 10.30am

Thirty two of our best scientists and

mathematicians from year six attended the

Science and Engineering Challenge organised

by the University of Newcastle. It was held at

The Pavillion in Gympie. It was a full day of

hands on learning in engineering and full of

challenges! One challenge was to build a

bridge in a set amount of time. All the

bridges were tested with weights and the last

one standing declared the winner! Another

challenge was to make a robotic hand. The

hand needed to be able to pick up one straw

but also a handful of straws. There were

other objects to pick up as well such as a ball.

Points were awarded for what items your

robotic hand could lift. All the students

reported the day was excellent fun and all

the teachers were pleased this ‘fun’ was

excellent learning! Thank you to Mr Derrick

for supervising us on the day and to Mrs

Cantle for organising the day.
