From the Principal
Welcome to Term 4 everyone!
I would like to thank Mrs Trish Hewitt who was Acting Principal in my absence during Term 3. Mrs
Hewitt did a great job in progressing our School Improvement Agenda.
Planning for 2018 has been well underway for some time. I am currently in the process of finalising
staffing and class arrangements for next year. Even the best laid plans may need to alter
dependent on many factors such as an increase or decrease in enrolments.
As soon as I am able I will publish our arrangements for next year.
I would like to thank the P&C for their support in allowing us to host the visiting authors last week.
As you can see form some of the class news they were very well received by the students and
staff.
Kellerberrin has been very fortunate to have our crossing guard back in place on the highway. I
would urge all parents and students to make use of this valuable service.

PBS UPDATE
As you are no doubt aware, our school is
working towards a culture of high
expectations and school improvement. The
impact on this for our students is across both
academic and social emotional domains.
As reported previously we are working
through the Positive Behaviour in Schools
process with the aim of establishing a
positive, school wide behaviour
management process and practices that
will impact positively on the educational
goals of all students.
The PBS committee have recently sought
feedback from students, staff and families
around behaviour and will now pool these
results to establish clearly defined behaviour
expectations and a school wide behaviour
matrix which will identify specific behaviours
suitable for each setting in our school.
If you have any questions about this process
please do not hesitate to contact us.

NEWS FROM THE CLASSROOMS
Kindy
In Kindy we have been learning about our
senses and how we use each sense to learn
about our world. Slimy spaghetti is sooooo
much fun to play with!!
PP/Year 1
What a busy start to term 4 we have had! We loved speaking to the visiting
authors and keeping the beat with Musica Viva.
In Literacy this term we have started looking at the story The Gingerbread
man. We have orally retold the story, made puppets to support our retell
and will now look at changing the characters in the story to help
develop our vocabulary when telling and writing stories. In
Numeracy we have started learning about money. We have learnt
about the features of the Australian coins and the value of them. This
term Mrs Cox has introduced a “reporter” instead of news telling we
have one student a day who has to ask the class a question and
they then share back the information they have gathered to the
class. We have had some very interesting questions like do you like
dogs or dinosaurs? Do you like building or going on holidays? I bet
you can guess which one had the most votes.
Year 1/ 2 We enjoyed reading to our buddies in the PP/1
class so much last term so have decided to
keep it up for term four! Last Thursday was our
first buddy reading session for the term and we
were very excited because we got a new
buddy to read to. Sometimes if the weather is
nice, we get to read out in the sunshine which is
lovely. Mrs Cox even sets up some fun stations in
her class to have a go at in our small teams.
Have a look at some of our buddies doing some
fabulous reading!
Year 2/3
Wow! Can you believe that we are in Term 4 already? This year has absolutely flown by. This term in Room 15
we are going to be learning how to write Information Reports and will be doing some speaking and listening
activities. We will also be continuing our work on Australia in Geography, in particular looking at important
places, our climate and our neighbouring countries. We are also looking forward to working closely with Mrs
Wilkins to enhance our knowledge of digital technologies. As you can see it is going to be another big term
of learning, but we will have
lots of
fun
doing
it.
NEWS FROM THE CLASSROOMS
Year 4
The year 4 class have welcomed two new students, Blaize and Nitro
into our class late last term. This term is going to be a busy term. We
are busy planning and rehearsing our assembly item and going on
incursions, all on top of our normal classes too. We loved working
with Raewyn Caisley, the visiting author on Monday and Tuesday of
week 2. She showed us some easy and effective ways to improve
our writing! In Maths, we are putting our thinking skills to work while
focusing on statistics and probability. We love making and using
spinners! In HASS, we are still continuing to learn all about Africa and
South America, including animals that are native to each continent.
We have been lucky to have Mrs Wilkins helping us last term and this
term as well, to develop our ICT skills.
Year 5/6 (Yellow)
The year 5/6 yellow class are looking forward to the huge term ahead. We have already enjoyed visiting
authors provided by the P&C and have been inspired to write and illustrate our own books. This term we are
continuing to work with Miss Michelle to create a classroom full of positive and happy learners. For HASS this
term students are learning about business and economics, and how it relates and affects our lives in
Kellerberrin. We are looking forward to presenting our class assembly to you all in week 6.
Year 5/6 (Blue)
This term, the Year 5/6 Blue class can’t wait to get
started on preparing for our Celebration Night
performance at the end of the year. We have
already started brainstorming ideas! In Maths we will
be exploring more division strategies and problems,
linking percentages with decimals and fractions and
lots of work with money. In Writing, we will be
constructing poems, narratives and some exposition
texts. We have been using the app Explain
Everything to make simple procedures in Digital
Technologies. Explain Everything is an interactive whiteboard app that allows students to create,
collaborate and share their work. The app has infinite uses and we have been watching YouTube tutorials to
help us learn how to best use it. The Year 5 students are looking at needs and wants in Business &
Economics, and will be exploring mobile phone plans and the associated advertising tricks. The Year 6
students will be looking forward to their End of Year Dinner too. Thank you to our parent representatives for
organising this. We look forward to a very productive and fun term with water polo at the pool coming up
soon and also our end of term rewards day!
Middle School
Welcome back to school! The Middle School has a new
teacher this term, Miss Forknall. Miss Forknall is very
excited to be working with the Middle School students
this term at Kellerberrin DHS. We are trialling a new
maths program where we can cater to the students
abilities and also incorporating Digital Technologies by
using the individual iPads. The students really enjoyed
the visiting authors in a Week 2 and we are reading one
of Norman Jorgenson's books in class. We have had a
great start to the term so far and we are looking forward to a busy but fun term full of learning.
Camp Fire with Miss Michelle (Chaplain)
Science This term in Science every year group is studying Chemistry. This is sure to be a fun and hands
on unit with lots of interesting experiments happening looking at how things change.
Home Ec This term the Middle School is participating in Home Economics activities, with a main focus
on the food aspect, with possibly a little exposure to how to use a washing machine and basic sewing skills.
The main focus of the food side of Home Ec will be to plan, budget, purchase, prepare and serve/partake
of a 3 course meal with all members of the class and staff.
Digital Technology This term classes are going to be exposed to the new learning area of Digital Technologies. I am excited to
be going into classrooms and introducing students to coding, algorithms and other components of Digital
Tech, as well as having students play and experiment with the different robots we have in our school.
This term we have also started a
coding club at school called
Codebusters. Students who are
interested in coding are invited to
come along at lunch times to
participate in fun, hands on
activities that are related to
coding.
If you would like to see some of the
things your student is learning and
you have access, Scratch Jnr is a
free coding app that can be
downloaded onto Apple and
Android devices, or Scratch 2.0
can be accessed via laptop or
desktop computers and doesn’t
need internet access if you decide
to download it.
