Mother Jane’s Message

Dear Intercession Family:

Today I share with you the homily I shared on Wednesday night.

The readings were Hebrews 4:12-16, Psalm 33:4-11; Mark 4:12-30

***************

The Living Word of God is active. When we listen to the Truths laid before us in Scripture---the Truths of our shortcomings, our weaknesses, and our sin, the Truth pierces us. It cuts into our hearts and minds. It challenges us and makes us uncomfortable.

We are then left with two options:

Ignore the Truths and maintain the status quo OR Lean into the discomfort and pain (which is completely unnatural)

If we can trust the Holy Spirit, then we are able to lean into the struggle, expecting God to shape and mold us, to change and transform us---sometimes gently…..sometimes not so much.

But, in the end, God will use what we place in God’s hands to create new life---to restore and vitalize that which desperately needs the breath of the Holy to be cast into it. Even when we don’t recognize it, God knows what parts of us need grace and correction. And God deeply desires to heal our jagged edges and to grace us with a wholeness we’ve never known before.

All it takes is the faith of a mustard seed. And there will be a yield of a hundred-fold.

“For the word of the LORD is right, and all his works are sure.”

Do we have what it takes?

Peace and blessings,

Mother Jane+

Lectionary Readings for November 3

Isaiah 1: 10-18 Psalm 32: 1-8 2 Thessalonians 1: 1-4, 11-12 Luke 19: 1-10

What does it mean to be an Episcopalian?

Can you answer that question? If not, you may be interested in a 6- week course Mother Jane will lead on Sunday mornings at 9 AM, from November 3rd to December 15th. This course will be perfect for newcomers, but also for any of us who feel like: "Hey, I'm not sure I can answer that question!" We will cover: the Episcopal Church's beginning and structure; Who is God (the Creeds); How do we read Scripture; What does it mean to be a People of the Covenant; Praying Shapes Believing; and Living the Life of a Disciple. We will meet in the Parish Hall. So, grab a cup of coffee and join us.

Vestry Updates:

Nancy Sommerfeld has agreed to fulfill Bruce Rathe's Vestry term. For personal reasons, Bruce resigned his position in September.

Roseanne Bossenbroek has agreed to fulfill the remaining year of Nancy Sommerfeld's term.

At the Annual meeting in February, we will elect two new Vestry members for Dottie Radd (end of term) and Sue Suehring (resigned).

Thank you Nancy and Roseanne for using your leadership skills to help serve this parish.

Ministry Opportunities:

Bread Makers: We need some people who would like to learn how to make the bread we use at Communion. If you think this is something you could do, please contact the office ([email protected] or 344-3879). Your commitment would be no more than making bread once a month.

Altar Guild: We could use a few more hands helping to prepare the altars for Sunday and Wednesday services. This is a once a month commitment. It is a loving and quiet ministry that serves us behind the scenes, but is crucial to our worship life together. We have wonderful training and support for this ministry, so please consider serving God in this way.

Welcome and Hospitality: Some members have put together bags of information with bread and some other “goodies” to hand out to newcomers and guests at Intercession. This ministry could use a few more people who are willing to hand out the bags on Sunday mornings. If you feel this is something you would like to do, please contact Judy Ordens ([email protected] or 344-7939)

Young Adult Prayer Group and weekly dinner outing:

Are you looking for a group of your peers to pray with, grow with, and hang with? Every Thursday at 5:30 PM we meet at the church, in the Young Adult room downstairs for an hour of prayer and reflection on our individual efforts at piety, study, and action. Afterward we grab some dinner at a local eatery for fellowship. All are welcome! Contact Chad Moertl for more information or join our young adult Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/groups/iyams/

Evening Service Returns

Exciting News at Intercession: Much thought, study, and conversation has taken place in order to give birth to a Campus Ministry here at Intercession. First of all, we are building a partnership with InterVarsity on the UWSP Campus, and Mother Jane is also building a relationship with at least one other student group. While we realize it will take some time to grow, we have a plan in place and we are almost ready to begin. Starting on Sunday, November 10th, we will hold an Alt. Worship service (alt being short for alternative) at 7:00 PM in the Canterbury room (the old Youth room in basement). While we hope this service attracts university students, it is a service for everyone. Our Alt worship will have an “Ancient/Future” flavor. What does “Ancient/Future” mean? It is founded on the ancient rituals and texts that are the foundation of Episcopal worship. The worship incorporates the ancient as a way to speak to both the present and future longings of today’s people. Often, people are disinterested, disenfranchised, and alienated from the church. We are seeking to provide a space and service that offers healing and reconnection to God and God’s people. What can you expect from this service? Beauty and involvement of the senses through candlelight, icons, music and words. As a community, we will gather in an intimate space in order to hear and respond to the Word, to pray, and to break bread and meet Christ in the Sacrament. In these acts, we seek healing, renewal and communion with one another and with God. Sound interesting? Then please join us on November 10th at 7:00 PM.

Youth Dates for November:

Nov. 10: At 6 PM we will meet for dinner and then attend the Alt Worship service at 7 PM. We will be done at 8 PM

Nov. 24: After worship at 11:30---We will be making Thanksgiving cards for Senior Citizens. We will be done at 1 PM

Youth Team: Amy and Jesse Kostuhoski, John Clabots, Julie and Shaun Morrow

“Writings of the Mystics -a walk into deeper prayer”

We meet every other Monday at 6:30 PM-8:00 PM, Library Room Dates are 10/28, 11/11, 11/25, and 12/9 Will resume in January after the Holidays

At each meeting, we discuss writings of people who became some of our greatest Saints. They are persons who developed a depth of prayer which enabled them to meet literally with God, in various types of “mystical” experiences. By studying the writings of these wonderful Saints, we are discovering how to follow in their footsteps to deepen our own lives in prayer. Come join our great discussions and learn how to be a Saint! You can order the book from amazon.com “The Essential Writings of Christian Mysticism” by ed. Bernard McGinn

NAMETAGS!! We've got 'em. There is a nametag holder at the top of the steps as you turn to move into the Parish Hall. If you're a member, there's one for you. If you've been attending regularly, there may be one for you as well. If you don't have one, but would like one---let us know! Why do we wear them? To know others and to be known. Check the nametag holder for yours or use a temporary one found at the main entrance to the church and let us know you'd like one made.

First Thursday Film Series The next movie that Dr. Jack Rhodes will present for his First Thursday Film Series is Three Came Home starring Claudette Colbert and Sessue Hayakaw. Hope Center Guidelines

Each Friday, Intercession is scheduled to cook and serve 5:30 evening meals at the Hope Center, 1600 Briggs Street, Stevens Point WI, 54481. While we have a list of regular volunteers from our parish, we are always looking for volunteers given everyone’s variable schedules. Please contact Ann Carlson to join. 715-252-6646, [email protected]. What you need to know about cooking is this. Call the Hope Center on Thursday and find out if they have a meal already planned for us for

Friday. 715-344-2371. If not, ask how many they are currently serving and have them thaw out enough meat or chicken from the freezer to accommodate the number of people. (You can always show up Thursday and pick something out of the freezer yourself if you prefer). Ask if they have milk, juice, butter/margarine, salad stuff and dessert. If not, get together

with your team and plan to bring whatever items are needed. Typically 2 gallons of milk will be enough for that meal. Feel free to bring dried onion soup packets which spice up the flavor of many meals. Arrive around 3:30 – 4:00, depending on the menu you are planning. The refrigerator, pantry

upstairs and downstairs and freezer goods are free to use unless specifically marked. Turn the knob under the three food warmers to plug the drain where the warm water is held. Fill

as many warmers as you need with water, about one gallon and half in each. Cover til you are ready to place the food in them. All cooking trays, covers and cutting boards are located under the main preparation

table. Pots and pan near the window. Residents of the Hope Center and people off the street will be waiting in the dining area by

5:30. Serving the meal is optional. If you serve, grace can be said by you, or office personnel. Serving trays utensils are located near the food warmers. Residents take care of doing the dishes.
