I am enjoying the wonders of the seasons and the beauty of

nature! We have a great deal to celebrate and to be thankful for.

As we have now moved to Alert Level 1 for us, there will be no ma-

jor changes to what we are doing and our school continues to be

safe to attend, including any staff and children who are considered more vulnerable to

COVID. We have a good cleaning routine in place, people who are sick are staying at

home and we continue to encourage good hygiene practices.

We are supporting contact tracing by having QR code posters. They are located in the

office foyer and on Room 2 classroom window. You can download app and the

Ministry of Health’s NZ-COVID Tracer app page has information to help you do that.

You can use these QR codes if you wish to.

We can now look forward to inter-school and community sport, cultural events and

performances and to welcoming all of our school community on site for these activities.

We are also planning increased numbers of field trips and other excursions.

Property Update

Last week the Board of Trustees met with the Ministry to discuss getting the upgrade

back on track. We have not confirmed the final design as the Ministry are looking at

options to increase our budget to enable the upgrade to be fully completed not just

partially completed. This all makes practical sense, but it means a longer process of

consultation and scoping of the work. We are keen to make this project a great one –

so if more time means a better outcome for our students, staff and community then we

are supportive of this.

Internet Safety

This month NETSAFE are providing parents with some additional support tools

(https://www.netsafe.org.nz/advice/parenting/) to support students and families with

online behaviours that promote acceptable online behaviour.

We are also including Digital Citizenship into our Health programme this term and the

students will update their online agreements. We will be sharing these agreements

with you and you are encouraged to open up dialogue about these platforms with your

children so that our shared values around the use of these is explored and understood.

Mr John Parsons is presenting a parent evening in Fairlie on Wednesday 17th

June at

7.00pm at the Mackenzie Community Centre. This is in conjunction with Heartlands

Fairlie Resource Centre and Mackenzie College. Mr Parsons provides a practical,

sensible approach to Internet Wellbeing and this would be a great evening to attend

and support.

Front of the School

We have had recent conversations around where is the Front of the School? Where do

you think it is – or where it should be? The location is important as we consider signage

and our overall environmental plan. Please give this some thought as we will be seeking

your ideas in the near future.

CLEANER

We have hired Ross Jarvis for the position of school cleaner.

ICE - HAZARD!

At this time of the year please be aware of the hard surfaces around the school and the

risks of slips due to ice.

Congratulations

Albury Kids – are rocking it! They are looking

fabulous in their new uniforms; they are

engaged in their learning, being kind,

inclusive and considerate towards each other,

and they are proud representatives ALBURY

SCHOOL and our community. It is a pleasure

and an honour to be part of their educational

journey with you.

Last Friday I captured these

pictures during the break time:

Well done to our awesome Room 1 children for the capable way they shared their learning when leading assembly last week.

Our curious learners are learning about native birds. We have received 4 large boxes of books from the national library to supplement our learning. Some of the questions children have asked are - What does native bird mean? What native birds do we have in NZ? Why have some native birds survived and some have all died?

Our letter of the week is "Kk" for kiwi. This week we are reading the shared book, 'How Kiwi Saved the Forest'. We are learning about speech marks and will be working on adapting this into a short play to share at the end of the term.

The ability to write descriptions using the perspectives of shape, colour, size, position, purpose and texture has been

shown to be integral to children's writing success. We have been practising this within our writing programme. Here is Charli's description of McCaw -

McCaw has a big sharp beak and two eyes on the side of his head. His legs are black. He has four claws on each foot. He has colourful wings. His body is red, yellow, blue and black. Ms Scott brought him from Australia because he is native to there.

Ben and Meila read the book 'My Tower' They then had some fun exploring with their own towers.

Congratulations to Olivia who finally got to take our Mathlete trophy home after earning it before lockdown.

We are very appreciative of Mr Ross and Sherri and all the work they are doing around the school. The children enjoyed working together to make a card and chocolate cake to show our appreciation.

Brr - what a frosty few weeks it has been! Great to see Room 2 students wearing hats and gloves to school to keep warm. The new uniforms are looking sharp too!

In Room 2 over the last two weeks we have been learning division for maths. Using repeated addition and dividing groups into equal shares to solve problems. Reading for information continues to be our focus for reading. We are learning to skim read and pick out facts from non-fiction stories to help with our Greenspace and Bird Inquiry. Writing we are continuing with our narrative stories.

Synonyms and homophones have been hot learning as well - see if your child can tell you what they are! Awesome to see some students doing their own training for

the upcoming cross-country at morning tea! Showing those awesome Albury Kid qualities there! Your child is learning some parts to a play to share at celebration assembly. Please help them to practise their lines!

Last week we had Sophie and Charli from Room 1 come in to teach us the dance moves of Moist Breath Zone - they did a great job teaching us! Thank you girls.
