We believe:the school is responsible for providing a high quality learning environment for each student; teachers and parents together must provide encouragement and support to inspire students to achieve; andall students are capable of developing the skills necessary to take responsibility for their learning and behaviour.
Community ProfileSteinhauer School serves students living in the Steinhauer neighbourhood and is the designated school for the Ermineskin, Paisley, Graydon and Hays Ridgeneighbourhoods. We have a school council that provides support and assistance to the school through their volunteer and fundraising efforts. We continue to have a strongbusiness partnership with St. Joseph's Auxiliary Hospital, Steinhauer Boys and Girls Clubs, In-School Mentors and the U of A Study Buddy Program, and a strong workingrelationship with the Ermineskin Community League, which is attached to our physical plant. A Before and After School Program is offered by the YMCA for Kindergarten toGrade 6 students within the school. What were the biggest challenges encountered in 2018/19 There has been an increase of student transiency rates with more students coming into our schoolmid-year with complex needs. We opened up our division one BLA program and had a lot of renovations within the school resulting in space challenges andadministrative attention being diverted to the project. We had a number of teachers in one classroom due to a leave of absence and termination of a contractwhich caused enormous stress for many of the students in that class. We saw an increase in the number of students with mental health challenges.
What are the implications from 2018/19 that will impact your current year plan? We are increasing the work being done to train all staff in having trauma-informedpractices within their classroom to assist with our students with complex needs. Initial results have been positive regarding our math scores and we continue touse Jump Math as our primary resource as our students benefit from the scaffolding and growth mindset approach. We continue to look for ways to enhance ourcharacter education through our "Leader in Me" program. Daily positive messages are shared with students focusing on being kind. In order to improve ourwriting results, K-6 classes will be engaged in Writer's Workshop.
