    Message from Pastor Anita Beste

    Every month, Prince of Peace

    gives benevolence donations

    to various organizations. In

the month of April, we will

    give financial support to:

    ELCA

    VIBE

    Thank you for your support

    and partnership in these

    ministries!

Last fall we completed the estimate of giving phase of our

Rooted in the Faith Reaching for the Future capital

campaign. So the commitment phase is done and the capital

improvements have begun (new furnaces and sanctuary air

conditioning installed)! This extra giving is for three years but the rooting

and reaching will continue way into the future! And this includes tending to

our sense of mission as a faith community.

Prince of Peace has a history of giving away 10% (a tithe) of its capital

campaign money to mission. That commitment continues and 10% of the

monies received (so approximately $50,000 of an anticipated $500,000) will be

designated for a Mission Tithe. But this time around some interesting

conversation was generated about what participating in mission should and

could look like: could mission mean more than sending money out to some

organization? could it include a partnership between Prince of Peace and

others? could mission outreach benefit our own faith community and the wider

    community at the same time?

So a process has been designed for members of Prince of Peace to submit

micro-grant proposals for a mission idea. Then those same people will become

the Grant Committee and discern together and grant together the allocation of

monies. (This echoes a similar and successful process that the Saint Paul Area

Synod used for dispersing the recent Crossroads grants.) And then the Prince

of Peace grant recipients will shepherd their mission project on behalf of

mission for the whole congregation and perhaps engage and involve others of

    us in the process.

Proposals for these micro-grants are due April 30, 2013. Then dates and times

for the committee to meet will be determined. A timeline for dispersing funds

will be developed. Grant proposal forms are available from the office, in the

narthex, or online. Some of the questions include:

Grant Proposal Name, Amount Requested & Description

What Communities will be served with this grant?

How will you reach out to your target community?

Will this include partnerships with any community groups?

How many other Prince of Peace volunteers will be involved?

How will you recruit these volunteers?

How many people do you anticipate this project will serve?

    community served?

If appropriate, how will funding be continued beyond this grant?

Anticipated Begin & End Date In January and February we held a series of Adult Forums on imagining

possibilities for mission. What would God have us be doing in this time and

place? Now we get to take the next step with action. So get your grant

engagement with mission in your prayers. Rooted in the Faith Reaching

for the Future Mission Tithe grant proposal s are due April 30, 2013. Mail

or email grant proposals to Mark Hanson, Office Manager

    ([email protected]).

Have you noticed a lot of stuff happening? New ministry

groups are forming, new people are getting involved, new

refugees will be planting in the garden, new babies are being

born and baptized, and the new member classes are growing too.

This newness leads to feelings of excitementhappiness that

something new is going on and appreciation of the Holy Spirit at work.

Thank you for the blessing of your ministryfor welcoming the stranger,

for mentoring the new person, for being vulnerable to learn new things and learn

    from others.

With all this newness, things are changing. This newness also leads to

to deal with. We are faced with uncertainty of what the future of the congregation

will be like and if new people will be making those choices.

that he wrote in Romans 11appropriately enough, he used a gardening metaphor. 19

20 That is true. They were broken off because of their unbelief, but you stand only

through faith. So do not become proud, but stand in awe. 21 For if God did not

spare the natural branches, perhaps he will not spare you.

Paul is talking about the Jews that were the first followers of Christ, but fell

off the tree, and the new Gentile believers whose faith is new and they are prideful.

    original

or grafted and that you could just as easily fall off the tree. Thus, without Christ,

we fall off just as a true wild olive tree depends on the root, Christ is our root.

Where I think this applies to us is that we are seeing the tree have many

new offshoots. But old shoots and new shoots are experiencing things differently.

The old shoots want to have new shoots, but maybe only if they learn to do things

There will be times where not everything is cleaned or picked up the right

way. There will be times that old and new forget to communicate and expect to

have spaces available at the same time.

The most important thing for us to remember is that we are all on this tree

together. We all have things to learnthe old from the new and the new from the

    old.

As a new pastor, I see an abundance of growth sprouting up.

    many long-time members are

taking risks in reaching out to others or trying to articulate their

firmly rooted at Prince of Peace. You are reaching out for a

plentiful harvest and new shoots will continue to flourish from this

    level of engagement.

the fruits of your ministry in the weeks, months, and years to come.

The passion for international connectivity is

one of the great features of Prince of Peace.

Much attention is placed on the partnership

here with the Iringa Diocese in Tanzania, but

the Sunday School has also had a long

    standing relationship with Lutheran Global

Missions and designated their offerings to

    supporting children from India.

This spring, we are joining together in a

    celebratory fashion to immerse the

    congregation in Indian culture. The

Oberdorfer family will be the hosts of Indian

Night a celebration of fun activities, great

authentic Indian food, and traditional Indian

Dance. There will be a Silent Auction and a

A portion of the proceeds will go to continue

supporting Lutheran Global Missions and the

kids in India and the remainder is for Youth

Fundraising for summer fun and future trips,

like the canoe trip and the Youth Gathering.

Come and have a great time! Invite another

Greetings from the Music Coordinator Milt Warkentien

When I was reading through the Scripture lessons

of the texts for April 14. This got me thinking about

faith journey. This has nothing to do about

how close am I to Saul or Paul? How many days am

I close to being completely immersed in Christ? I

but I know there are days and times when Christ

journeys. Are you able to be like Paul or are there

days when Saul creeps into your life,

too? The opening verse of ELW 779

Amazing Grace! How sweet the sound

that saved a wretch like me!

I once was lost, but now am found,

Easter season is that our eyes are always open and that

the resurrected Christ is alive and living within us all. As

the youth learned in New Orleans, if Christ is alive in

our hearts we CAN make a difference. May we all be

more Paul than Saul and have Christ be the focus of our

lives. May God bless us all, Milty.

    Council Corner Deb Cordes

As I write this article, I am still thinking

about Holy Week and Easter. Good

Friday has always been the most

meaningful time of the church season for

me. I have always wondered how it must

have felt to know you had to give up everything your

wonder what it takes to make that sacrifice willingly.

    -taking becomes real and

present for me. It is Good Friday that seems to confirm

the reality of my Christianity. It is the blackness that

seeks light. The pain and heartbreak that turns to

wonder, then joy. When I walk away from the darkened

sanctuary with the starkness of the cross present, I

know the next day I will place flowers around the table,

drink coffee with friends, smell the aroma of the

flowers and the beauty the Worship Committee brings

into what was a stark and dark place. Then the joy of

echoes through the sanctuary like a trumpet calling us

to action into the seasons beyond.

Prince of Peace seems to be a place of action a place

the Monday work crews, the cookie bakers, those who

are creating grant proposals for mission tithe monies,

the 20-40 group that is forming with plans for the

moving, praying, being guided by that spirit of Easter

He is risen! He is risen indeed!

We received a warm thanks from Maria Larson

    following her gall bladder surgery:

    Dear Prince of Peace Friends,

have given me during my surgery and recuperation blessings of prayers, visits, cards, calls, flowers and food. Your prayers were especially a great comfort to me as well

were able to be with me. May God continue His work through you. With Gratitude, Maria Larson

will be used in the construction

of the columbarium and he will answer all your

    questions. Pre-construction applications will be

    Projected timeline:

Help protect raptors and the world we share by

    Recycling for

Raptors program. Started in 2003, this activity helps

individuals and organizations recycle their inkjet

printer cartridges, while raising funds to support The

    Raptor Center.

Did you know that nearly one million cartridges are

disposed of each day in the United States? Current

estimates reveal that approximately 30% of ink

cartridges are being recycled. While that is a good

start, about 70% are still going to landfills, and it can

take as long as 450 years for a cartridge to

    decompose in a landfill.

Join forces with The Raptor Center today by

donating your used cartridges by depositing them in

the Recycle for Raptors box located under the Equal

Exchange Coffee table in the church hallway.

With the help of many individuals and organizations

throughout the United States, The Raptor Center has

recycled more than 125,000 ink cartridges

amounting to over 8 tons of materials since the

program began. Thanks so much for your partici-

    pation in this effort!

encouraged to submit an application for a micro-grant as

    Volunteer Week Potluck

    Sunday, April 21st, 12:00 Noon

Volunteer Week is April 21-27. Come

celebrate the beginning of Volunteer Week

at a potluck following the second service on

April 21st! We will celebrate the many

ways in which members of Prince of Peace

use their time and talents to volunteer at

church and in the community. If you have

pictures of our many volunteers in action,

please bring them for the bulletin board in

the hallway. We are also revamping the way

that members can sign up to share their time

Prince of Peace, and will introduce that at

the lunch. Thank you for all you do!
