Introduction Options and upgrade

1.2 Options and upgrade

Second processor

The system board can be upgraded with a second processor. Only processors of the same type may be used on the system board. The second processor must have the same clock frequency and the same cache as the first processor.

Upgrading of the main memory

The eight slots for the main memory are suitable for PC2-3200 DDR DIMM memory modules. The organization in four memory banks, 0 to 3, permits rapid memory access with two-way interleaving.

Memory modules must always be incorporated in pairs. A memory bank must always be equipped fully with the same type of memory modules.

ROMB (RAID on motherboard)

The System is extended with an on board Intel I/O processor. If the controller is activated, the on-board 2 channel U320 SCSI-Controller supports RAID Level 0, 1, 10, 5 and 50 on both SCSI channels

"MegaRaid PCI Express™ ROMB" can be activated with two different upgrading kits.

Additional accessible drives

One 3.25-inch bay and one 3,5-inch bay are available for accessible drives.

One 5.25-inch bay can be installed with a 3.5 inch x 0.5 inch floppy disk drive or a LocalView module and the other bay can be installed with a 5.25-inch x 0,5 inch DVD-ROM drive.

LocalView module (alphanumeric system display)

The LocalView module provides you with the option of displaying system infor-mation and hardware system faults alphanumerically. This is an intelligent module with a micro-controller and its own memory, which functions indepen-dently of the server system.

Introduction Options and upgrade

RemoteView Service Board S2 LP (2U/3U)

The RemoteView Service Board S2 LP (RSB S2 LP) is a PCI board with a completely independent system, i.e. it has its own operating system with Web server and SNMP agents and can optionally be equipped with an external power supply. The RSB permits remote diagnosis for system analysis, remote system configuration and remote restart even in the event of operating system failure or hardware faults. It has its own LAN connection. All the functions of the RSB are available via a LAN.

External SCSI interface

One channel of the on-board SCSI controller can optionally be made available externally.

Parallel interface for printers

As an option, a parallel interface can be provided for printers.

Conversion of SCSI 1-channel version to SCSI 2-channel version

The internal SCSI configuration can be converted from a 1-channel version to a 2-channel version. The hard disk access times are shortened. Use of the 2-channel version together with a RAID controller increases the availability of the system.

13 Converting from 1- to 2-channel version

V CAUTION!

Observe the safety instructions in the chapter „Safety notes“ on page 9.

I For the PRIMERGY RX300 S2 the SCSI backplane is separated into two parts. The 1st SCSI backplane can stay installed for both configurations. For upgrading you must change the second SCSI backplane. Die 1-channel backplane must be exchanged for a 2-channel SCSI backplane (which is the same as the SCSI backplane installed in the first SCSI backplane holder yet) and the SCSI cabling must be exchanged.

Appendix Hard disk mirroring

16.3 Hard disk mirroring

Figure 95: part of the system configurator

The system is equipped with a two channel Utra 320 SCSI on-board controller and embedded "IME".IME (Integrated Mirroring Enhanced) offers the RAID levels 1, 1E witout any additional costs.IME is a RAID 1 implementation ( no RAID 0 support ), which also can operate with an odd number of hard disks( max. 1 RAID 1 set ). Up to 6 hard disks including one hot spare HD are possible depending on the system. Administration of IME is possible with the LSI Global Array Manager (GAM). Windows2000/2003 as well as SuSe and RedHat Linux are supported ( Restrictions refer to Software Configurator )

Example with 3 HD`s:

1-channel standard SCSI-cabling of a basic unit PRIMERGY RX300 S2 with on-board controller1. One channel of the Ultra 320 SCSI controller is connected to the 6 internal hard disks, if no additional HD controllers are configured for internal HDs. (Two backplanes with 3 HDs each cascaded to one SCSI channel with 6HD`s = standard cabling).2. The second channel of the Ultra 320 SCSI controller is available for external accessible SCSI drives with S26361-F3120-E12-channel SCSI cabling of a PRIMERGY RX300 S2 basic unit with on-board controller and "Conversion kit 6 HD 2-channel" For the order of a "Conversion kit 6 HD 2-channel (S26361-F2612-E4)", both channels of the Ultra 320 SCSI controller are connected to one backplane for 3 HDs each. All internal cables and adapters for the basic unit and for components are included. 1x per RX300 S2
