A RESOURCE GUIDE FOR OLDER ADULTSprime times
by Don CorriganKirkwood resident Jane Towater’s long history of
dedication to racial justice and community service has
been recognized with countless honors, most recentlythe “Ageless-Remarkable St. Louisan” award given by
St. Andrew’s Center.
During her tenure as the Associate National
Executive Director of the YWCA USA (Young Women’s
Christian Association), Towater worked both national-
ly and internationally for women’s equality and for the
elimination of racism.
“I certainly didn’t do it by myself,” said Towater,
who at 87 years young is still an outspoken dynamo. “I
worked alongside the late civil rights leader and
YWCA Racial Justice Director Dorothy Height on a
variety of national projects. I learned from her.
“I highly recommend her book, ‘Open Wide the
Gates of Freedom,’ which describes the Freedom
Summer in Mississippi and being at Martin Luther
King Jr.’s side during the March on Washington. She
also talks about our projects in the book.” Among Towater’s YWCA projects: constructing a

school for girls and women in Turkey;
providing milk cows for families in
Africa; encouraging equal rights for
women in countries with repressive
governments.
Following freedom fighter Nelson
Mandela’s release from prison,Towater explored the many needs of
non-profit organizations in South
Africa that worked for a peaceful tran-
sition from the long years of apart-
heid.
“The YWCA was in 91 countries
when I was an associate director, and
in many of those countries we were
dealing with basic human needs, not
recreation,” said Towater. “It was a
matter of helping people to survive.”
Towater served with the YWCA
from 1968 to 1995, although she
remains with the organization as a
consultant and volunteer.
Prior to joining the YWCA, Towater
also played an instrumental role indeveloping the groundwork for inner-
city street theater in Detroit following
the violent civil disturbances in the
city in the 1960s.
Early in her career, Towater was
the youngest executive director ever of
the Girl Scout Council in Tennessee in
the 1950s. While with the Girl Scout
organization, she built a multi-racial
board and worked to integrate the
organization’s many camp offerings.
Today, the “Ageless-Remarkable St.
Louisan” continues to address human
rights issues as a volunteer with the
YWCA. She is also involved with
Junior League Sustainer Council and
active with the Women’s Society ofWashington University.
Saddened by Ferguson
A transplant from Jackson, Tenn.,
and now a proud St. Louisan, Towater
said what we have learned in theaftermath of events in Ferguson shows
we have a long way to go on the civil
rights front. Among her observa-
tions:
• “We have got to stop profiling. We
see people of a different color, or with
a different religion, or from a different
neighborhood, and we make faulty
assumptions. We have to end profil-
ing.
• “We don’t have enough people
who are disturbed by the inequality
and the injustice in our society. If
everything in our own backyard seems
okay, then we are satisfied with the
status quo.
• “We are on a counterproductivecycle in this country in that we only
react to problems when there is disor-
der or a disturbance. Then, we wake
up. We need to be fully open and hon-
est about our situations all the time.
• “We have too many hate groups in
this country. I belong to Southern
Poverty Law Center, which has identi-
fied hate groups all over America anda number of them in Missouri. We
need to stand up to hatred.”
As a leader herself on women’s and
racial issues, Towater is not shy about
offering up some viewpoints on cur-
rent American political leadership.
“I think President Obama is an
American citizen who is doing the best
he can do,” said Towater. “What he
has done is not enough. I think when
we get down the road a few years from
his presidency, we will realize just
how much racism came out during the
time of the first black President.”
On the battle that has already com-
menced for the U.S. Presidency for
2016, Towater is shaking her head likemany Americans over developments
with both political parties.
“It’s all about Donald Trump now.
On Trump, I don’t like his personality,
his showmanship, his methodology,”
said Towater. “But to his credit, he has
brought up things no one wants to
really talk about.
“One of those things is how much
money is in politics and how it buys
what contributors want,” said Towater.
“He has put down politicians on both
sides about this, and he wants every-
one to know he has so much money he
cannot be bought.”
Many Needs To AddressFor one of the richest countries in
the world, Towater said America and
states like Missouri have a lot of
needs, whether in the area of health
care, helping the homeless and work-
ing with the abused. She praises the
work of the YWCA in addressing the
needs.
“We have had a housing program torescue the people out on the street,”
said Towater. “We have had aid for
education to help young mothers try-
ing to balance jobs and school, and
health care programs for their kids.
“Right here in Missouri, one out of
seven women has suffered from some
form of sexual abuse in their lives,”
said Towater. “The YWCA is providing
programs to address that.”
Even at 87, Towater finds the
wherewithal to volunteer in the orga-
nization’s programs. She said people
over 65 in America still have plenty of
years to contribute to a better America,
and the retirement years don’t have to
be all about bridge and dominoes. The over-65 population in America
will rise from 12 percent in 2000 to
almost 20 percent in 2030. Towater
said there is plenty of untapped talent,
energy and enthusiasm in that age
bracket.
“That’s why I am looking forward to
seeing who will be chosen as the 2015
“Ageless-Remarkable St. Louisan,”
said the 2104 Ageless-Remarkable St.
Louisan from Kirkwood.
The 2015 honoree will be awarded
at a 6 p.m. dinner on Nov. 15 at the
Hyatt Regency St. Louis at the Arch.

“I love God and I love people. That
became my mission – to touch people
with Jesus Christ for healing and
service.”
Holding rm to that mission,
Rev. Walt Schoedel, director of
Church Relations at Lutheran Senior
Services (LSS) and emeritus pastor
at Concordia Lutheran Church in
Kirkwood, celebrates his 65th year of
ministry in October.
“It’s not every day that someone
has the opportunity to celebrate
this long of a career in ministry,” he
said. “I have found more and more
congregations interested in wantingto reach out to older adults. So what
a blessing that at LSS I can help
congregations bring spiritual and life
fulllment.”
And with such a length of tenure,
Rev. Schoedel holds a wide grasp
of knowledge. As well as having
served on the Kirkwood Chamber of
Commerce, the Kirkwood Rotary, the
Kirkwood YMCA’s Board of Directors
and the Webster Groves Round Table
Older Adults Group, Rev. Schoedel
led several congregations before
nishing his parish ministry in 1991
at Concordia Lutheran Church in
Kirkwood.
“I didn’t think of my time ending inparish ministry in terms of retiring,
but as a repositioning. I wasn’t going
to become a couch potato. I wanted to
use my gifts to help my peers have a
fullled retirement,” he said.
Moving from Concordia Kirkwood
to Lutheran Senior Services was a
natural t.“LSS is a part of my inner-gut
feelings. They’ve made it possible for
me to continue my passion,” Schoedel
said.
As director of Church Relations,
Rev. Schoedel focuses his efforts onreaching out to congregations, pastors
and the community.
“I feel privileged to be part of the
LSS mission of Older Adults Living
Life to the Fullest, not only here but
throughout the county. My message
has been that you have to look at
the gifts and experiences of those
older adults around you. There are so
many who have untapped gifts for a
meaningful ministry,” he said.
From his quarterly newsletter
“Engaging the Aging,” to guest
preaching and lecturing, Rev.
Schoedel has been an inspiration to
others for the joy and fulllment that
can come with aging. He and his wifeLee have a heart for mission that also
extends to family.
“Son Mark is an engineer who as
he was growing up saw the church
and its ministry rst-hand. Now as
the vice president of construction and
IT at LSS, he uses his background
to make a difference in the lives of
older adults as well,” he said. “Plus
he’s just down the hall and that’s nice
too.”
Rev. Walt Schoedel will be
recognized at Lutheran Senior
Services and Concordia Lutheran
Church in Kirkwood on Oct. 25 for his
65 years in ministry and continued
impact.
Walt Schoedel “Repositioned” RatherThan Retired From Lutheran Ministry
“I didn’t think of my timeending in parish ministryin terms of retiring, but as

by Linda JarrettBeing a good grandmother comes
naturally to most women, but being
voted one of the 10 best grandmothers
in Missouri is high praise, indeed.
When Crestwood resident Pam
Berra was asked to drop by her friend
Terri Schuchard’s house one day last
August, she had no idea what
Schuchard had in store for her.
Earlier in the summer, Schuchard
had taken pictures of Berra and
Berra’s 4-year-old grandson, Daniel,on the pretext of wanting to make a
photo collage. Berra assumed she was
going to see the results when she visit-
ed Schuchard.
“I asked her if she had finished the
collage and she told me that was a lie,”
Berra said. “Instead, she said I had
been voted one of the 10 best grand-
mothers in Missouri. I just couldn’t
believe it.”
The “Show Me Missouri’s 10 Best
Grandmothers” contest was sponsored
by the Magic of Marceline Development
Company in Marceline, Mo., the home-
town of Walt Disney. When Schuchard
heard of the contest, she decided that
if anyone was worthy of that honor, it
was Berra. Schuchard wrote an essay
describing Berra and why she should
be one of the 10 best, and submitted itto the contest.
Berra’s daughter, Abigail Faith,
died in 2013 after a long illness, leav-
ing behind a 2-year-old son, Daniel.
Berra assumed guardianship of the
boy, and finds herself at age 62 raising
her grandson, who is now 4.
The Berras lost another daughter,
Rebecca, in 1995. She drowned in
Guam while serving in the Navy.
In addition to Daniel, Berra and her
husband, Steve, who has Parkinson’s
disease, have two other grandchildren:
Alex, 6, and Molly, 9, children of their
son Dan and his wife Laura.
Top 10 Grandmother As Daniel hopped around the living
room, laughing all the while, Berra
explained that they have told him that
his mother is in Heaven.

said. “Except she was very quiet andvery shy, but Daniel never has a quietmoment. He talks nonstop and is soactive.”
When asked what made his “Mimi”special, Daniel paused a moment, thensaid, “She plays swords and reads sto-ries to me, like ‘Thomas the TankEngine.’”
Alex said that Berra “fixes my bro-ken toys and makes bags for me to putmy stuff in.”
Molly thought awhile, then said,“She plays lots of games with us andshe comes to my dance recitals, and wehave sleepovers in the living roomwith lots of blankets.”
Besides dance recitals, Berraattends the grandkids’ ballgames, andindulges Daniel’s love for trains withregular trips to the Museum of
Transportation.Berra works for Creative
Communications for the Parish, a firmthat publishes religious material, andbelongs to St. Paul’s Lutheran Churchin Des Peres.
When speaking about raising a4-year-old at this stage in her life, shesaid, “You don’t think about it, you
just do what you have to do, what allof us parents do.
“Of course, you don’t always makethe right decisions, as is part of moth-erhood,” she said. “Without God in mylife, I couldn’t do it.”
The winners of the “Show MeMissouri’s 10 Best Grandmothers”
contest were selected on the basis of aone-page written essay. Entries were
judged on values-oriented attributes,
such as character building, indepen-dence, self-reliance and family ties.
“Grandmothers are foundational intransmitting values to their childrenand grandchildren,” said Mike Wrenn,CEO of the Magic of MarcelineDevelopment Company. “Holding thegala celebration in Walt Disney’s boy-hood hometown is intended as areminder of the compelling values thatinspired Disney, and through him, children around the world.”
The awards were given at a dinneron Sept. 26 at the WalsworthCommunity Center in Marceline.Berra was there with 14 of her friends
and family, who were eager to cele-brate with her.
Coincidentally, Berra has always
been a Disney fan.“I would always watch ‘The
Wonderful World of Color,’ andadmired him all my life,” she said.
Husband Steve is very proud of hiswife.
“Everything they say is true for all
our 42 years,” he said. “I’ve alwaysthought of her as a combination ofthree famous people: Sacagaweabecause she loves the outdoors, MotherTeresa, the caregiver, and CalamityJane because she has a habit of over-doing things – like the time she want-ed to wax my ’65 Chevy Impala, andused floor wax. God made her for me.”
Her son, Daniel, said she is mental-ly and emotionally the strongest per-son he knows.
“Probably pound for pound physi-cally, too,” he said. “She just keepsgoing and we give her help when wecan while she focuses on Daniel andour kids.”
For the contest essay, Schucharddescribed her friend Berra in heartfeltterms.
“Looking in from the outside, herlife seems like one of only hard work, service and follow through,” she wrote.“However, you have to know Pam. Shedoes what she does every day with joy, happiness and gratitude. Most impor-tantly, she has on the inside whatcounts – the ability to do whatever isnecessary to make her dreams for her-self and her family come true. That iswhy I think that she is, undoubtedly, one of Missouri’s 10 best grand-mothers.”
Her friends and family agree.

Citizens for Modern Transit(CMT) has launched the fall sessionof its Ten Toe Express program, which helps older adults integratewalking with public transit to exploremany of the region’s cultural andentertainment hot spots.
Walks range from 0.3 to 5miles, depending on the group anddestination. Walking groups meet atMetroLink stations and take Metrotransit to the destination. Walks arein a variety of places such as ForestPark or Carondelet Park, downtownSt. Louis or the Delmar Loop. Groupsoften nish at a unique shop or stop
for lunch or a snack before headingback.
This time around, the organizationhas teamed up with Great Rivers
Greenway to spotlight the links thatexist between transit and local trails.
Five new walking maps havebeen developed that provide detaileddirectives on how individuals can usetransit and walking to explore specic
sections of Great Rivers Greenways’
interconnected system of greenways, parks and trails. Access these maps, and a catalog of more than 100 otherwalk maps, online.
Participants of the 12-week walkprogram can also take part in weekly, guided walking tours, led by trainedvolunteer walk leaders.
