Although the prime numbers are the building blocks of elementary arithmetic, they still hold many mysteries. Tantalizing questions that were familiar to Euclid and the ancient Greeks remain unanswered. How did several Pomona College students discover intriguing new behavior in the large-scale behavior of the primes? What did they find? What do prime numbers have to do with insect sinsect swarms, cybersecurity, and the search for alien life? Come to this talk to find out! No knowledge of mathematics beyond addition and multiplication is required.

Garcia is the author of four books and over 80 research articles in operator theory, complex analysis, matrix analysis, number theory, discrete geometry, and other fields. He has coauthored over two dozen articles with students, including one that appeared in "The Best Writing on Mathematics: 2015." He is a on Mathematics: 2015." He is a Fellow of the American Mathematical Society and was the inaugural recipient of the society's Dolciani Prize for Excellence in Research.
