The Direction of PRIME-TIMEHALF-TIME
CDE Vision for Expanded Learning“California’s Expanded Learning programs are an integral part of young people’s education, engaging them in year-round learning opportunities that prepare them for college, career, and life.”
After School is no longer a unit at CDE but a Division with plans to maximize outcomes for children, youth, schools and communities.
According to the CDE After School Division the term Expanded Learning refers to before and after school, summer, and intersession learning programs.
The focus in on developing the academic, social, emotional, and physical needs and interests of students through hands-on, engaging learning experiences.
Programs should be results-driven, flexible to student and community needs, include community partners, and complement but not replicate traditional classroom instruction.

brain research and what we know about children and their learning. These principles
should be reflected in quality after school programs.
Learning that is Active
Learning that is Collaborative
