People’s DesirePERSPECTIVES

The government is dedicated itself toimproving the living conditions of the people inpursuance of the national goal of building apeaceful, modern and developed nation. Withfavourable weather pattern and geographicalfeatures, Myanmar has been an agro-based nationsince time immemorial.

The majority of the nation's workingpopulation are farmers. Therefore, developmentof agriculture as the base and all-rounddevelopment of other sectors of the economy aswell is a practical task. At present, the governmentis working hard to beef up exploitation of naturalresources, reclamation of fallow and virgin landsfor agricultural purpose and cultivation capacity.

In the message sent by Chairman of the StatePeace and Development Council Senior GeneralThan Shwe on the occasion of the Peasants Day(2009), it was stated that the agriculture isbooming, and the transforming of the countryfrom conventional farming to mechanized farmingis on target in terms of manufacturing farmequipment and machinery; that therefore, thenation's food supply has met the demand for thefuture population of 100 million, far more thanthe supply for the present population of over 50million, and our country is contributing towardsthe food supply for the world people.

At present, there are 190 dams, 29 sluicegates, 322 river water pumping stations, 7974underground water tapping stations and 658 smallrural dams in the nation. As a result of theemergence of a large number of new irrigationfacilities, the nation's total sown acreage hasincreased, and the cultivation capacity has jumped.

At such a time, the farmers in cooperationwith the entrepreneurs are to set up agriculturalzones and reclaim fallow and virgin lands for thesuccess of mechanized farming. And they are toextensively engage in cultivation of high yieldcrops applying modern agricultural methods.Only then, will the cultivation capacity increaseand the agricultural sector improve.

Medvedev wants specific USmissile proposals

MOSCOW, 2 March— Russian President DmitryMedvedev is expecting specific US proposals on mis-sile defence, one of the main bones of contention be-tween Moscow and Washington, to discuss at his firstmeeting with President Barack Obama.

The new US administration has said it wants to“press the reset button” on relations with Russia afterties between the two countries sank to a post-Cold Warlow during the presidency of George W Bush.

Russia, still smarting from what it sees as years ofgains by Washington and NATO at its expense in theformer communist world, has reacted cautiously.

In particular, Moscow wants to see what the UnitedStates will do with the Bush administration’s plans tostation systems in NATO allies Poland and the CzechRepublic to detect and shoot down hostile missiles.Russia says this threatens its security.

Medvedev said in an interview given to Spanishmedia he had received signals from the Obama ad-ministration that it wanted to approach the issue ofanti-missile weapons in a “more creative and coop-erative” way than its predecessor.

Under heavy guard, the protesters — waving Iraqi flags and chanting“No to sectarianism” — also demanded the election commission be replaced, al-leging a Sunni bias.

HAVANA, 2 March—Amid two wars and aneconomic crisis, Cubapolicy hardly ranks at thetop of President BarackObama’s long agenda.

But circumstances arepressuring Obama to makea move on Cuba soon—ormiss an opportunity to ad-vance his pledge to restoreAmerica’s leadership inthe world and in its ownhemisphere.

Conversations withCuban officials here sug-gest that unless the Obamaadministration signals itsintentions quickly andclearly, it will disappointnot only Cuba, but alsomany Latin Americanleaders watch-ing for signsthat the US is ready tochart a dramatic newcourse in the region.

The unofficial targetfor action seems to be lateApril, when Obama trav-els to the Summit of theAmericas, being held onthe Caribbean island ofTrinidad. Cuba is not in-vited, but will nonethe-less be on many partici-pants’ minds.

Vegetable-based drugcould inhibit melanoma

WASHINGTON, 2 March — Compounds extractedfrom green vegetables such as broccoli and cabbagecould be a potent drug against melanoma, according tocancer researchers.

Tests on mice suggest that these compounds, whencombined with selenium, target tumors more safelyand effectively than conventional therapy.

“There are currently no drugs to target the proteinsthat trigger melanoma,” said Gavin Robertson, associateprofessor of pharmacology, pathology anddermatology, Penn State College of Medicine.

“We have developed drugs from naturally occurringcompounds that can inhibit the growth of tumors inmice by 50 to 60 percent with a very low dose.”

Robertson and his colleagues previously showedthe therapeutic potential of targeting the Akt3 proteinin inhibiting the development of melanoma.

The search for a drug to block the protein led themto a class of compounds called isothiocyanates.

These naturally occurring chemicals found incruciferous vegetables are known to have certain cancer-fighting properties.

JAKARTA, 2 March —Afunky, psychedelic fish thatbounces on the ocean floorlike a rubber ball has beenclassified as a new species,a scientific journalreported.

The frogfish — whichhas a swirl of tan and peachzebra stripes that extendfrom its aqua eyes to its tail— was initially discoveredby scuba diving instructorsworking for a tour operatora year ago in shallowwaters off Ambon islandin eastern Indonesia.

The operator contactedTed Pietsch, lead author ofa paper published in thismonth’s edition of Copeia, the journal of the AmericanSociety of Ichthyologistsand Herpetologists, whosubmitted DNA workidentifying it as a newspecies. The fish — whichthe University ofWashington professor hasnamed “psychedelica” —is a member of theantennariid genus,Histiophryne, and like otherfrogfish, has fins on bothsides of its body that haveevolved to be leg-like.

But it has several

behavioral traits notpreviously known to theothers, Pietsch wrote.

Each time the fish strikethe seabed, for instance, they push off with theirfins and expel water fromtiny gill openings to jetthemselves forward. That, and an off-centered tail, causes them to bouncearound in a bizarre, chaoticmanner.

Mark Erdman, a senioradviser to the ConservationInternational’s marineprogramme, said onThursday it was an excitingdiscovery.

HONG KONG, 2 March — A team ofscientists from the University of HongKong and the United States on Sundaysaid they have developed a new vaccinestrategy against the H5N1 bird flu virus bygenetically modifying a smallpox vaccine. The new vaccine is potentially a soundsolution in case of an H5N1 bird flupandemic, which many scientists havebeen worried about, said Malik Peiris, amicrobiologist and bird flu researchauthority at the University of Hong Kong.

Peiris said that the new vaccinehas proven safer in experiments onmice and that “a single vaccine dosewill provide rapid protective immuneresponses.”

It is also expected to enable fastmass production thanks to thepossibility of using cell-culturemethods, which could help avoidpotential production bottlenecks as eggswill have to be used in the productionof vaccines currently on offer.

And the existing facilities usedfor the production of smallpox vaccinescan be used to produce the bird fluvaccines without much trouble, whichcan help reduce the costs, said anothermember of the research team, addingthat alternative strategies availableinvolving genetic engineering methodshave been typically expensive.
