The Graduation Parade of the 10th Intake ofDefence Services Medical Academy took place atthe parade ground of DSMA in Yangon the otherday, with an address by Commander-in-Chief ofDefence Services Senior General Than Shwe.

In his speech, the Senior General said, “I wouldlike to urge you to try your best to become reliableand responsible medical officers with mental andphysical prowess; to make a constant study ofmodern wars from military and medical points ofviews and to improve your military skills to bealways ready to carry out national defence duties ifnecessary; and to consolidate national cohesion bydoing your bit with heart and soul in public healthcare in the regions where you are posted.”

Being members of medical corps, the newly-graduated officers will have to take disease controlmeasures and give educative talks apart frommedical service in order to help every servicemankeep healthy and fit and be ready to engage incombats.

It is also compulsory for them to provide healthcare not only to servicemen and their families butalso to local people of the regions where they are inservice. In particular, they have to show greatgoodwill and kindness in giving treatment to localpeople in rural areas who make up the majority ofthe nation’s population in order that the latter canlead a healthy life.

Not to mention, newly-graduated medicalofficers are duty-bound to play whatever role theyare in national defence duties as they are alsoservicemen of Defence Services. They have to stayin touch with advancements in warfare, andeffectiveness of sophisticated weapons such aschemical and biological ones. Only then will it bepossible for them to avoid with military awarenessthe causes that are likely to sustain injuries andharm health and fitness of combat soldiers.

It is, therefore, believed that the newly-qualifiedmedical officers will be able to dedicate their livesto national defence duties and public health care, while undergoing constant training to improvephysical and mental calibres in conformity with thefine traditions of the Tatmadaw for they are medicaldoctors as well as triumphant elites.

Coral springs back from tsunami

Cancer drug aids transplantsCHICAGO , 27 Dec — A drug used to treat cancer has proven effective at stopping

the body from rejecting a transplanted organ when other treatments failed, a studypublished on Saturday found.

US researchers administered the drug, bortezomib, to six patients whose immunesystems were attacking transplanted kidneys and who did not respond to traditionalanti-rejection treatments. In each case, the drug promptly reversed the rejection, improved organ function, provided prolonged reductions in antibody levels andsuppressed recurrent rejection for at least five months.

“This has significant implications for transplantation and auto immune disease,”said study co-author Steve Woodle, chief of transplant surgery at the University ofCincinnati in Ohio. Woodle’s team is currently conducting four clinical trials toexpand upon these preliminary findings.

The drug’s side effects proved to be both predictable and manageable andtoxicity levels were much less than those associated with other anti-cancer agents, the study found. “We are pleased to see its toxicities are similar in transplantrecipients suffering from treatment-resistant mixed organ rejection,” said study co-author Jason Everly, an oncology pharmacist at the University of Cincinnati.

“We hope it will be a viable therapeutic treatment option in this patient group.”Previous studies had found that B-cells play a large role in organ rejection bymaking immune proteins that attack transplants.

Divers have been helping restore Indonesia’scoral reefs.—INTERNET

JAKARTA , 27 Dec —Scientists have reported arapid recovery in some ofthe coral reefs that weredamaged by the IndianOcean tsunami four yearsago. It had been fearedthat some of the reefs offthe coast of Indonesiacould take a decade torecover. The New York-

based Wildlife Conser-vation Society (WCS)found evidence of rapidgrowth of young corals inbadly-hit areas. A spokes-man said reefs damagedbefore the tsunami werealso recovering.

Some communitieswere abandoning de-structive fishing tech-

niques and even trans-planting corals intodamaged areas, the WCSsaid. “This is a great storyof ecosystem resilienceand recovery,” said StuartCampbell, co-ordinator ofthe WCS’s IndonesiaMarine Programme.

“These findings pro-vide new insights intocoral recovery processesthat can help us managecoral reefs in the face ofclimate change.”

Ove Hoegh-Guldberg,a reef expert from theUniversity of Queenslandin Australia who did nottake part in the study, saidthe findings were notsurprising since coralstypically recovered if notaffected by fishing andcoastal development.

Child ADHD linked to mom’s medical care

Rural areas have muchhigher injury rate

MORGANTOWN, ( W.Va.), 27 Dec — Country lifemay provide scenic tableaus but a US study foundinjuries requiring hospitalization occur at much higherrates in rural areas than elsewhere.

West Virginia University researchers analyzed allreported injuries of people who were admitted to UShospitals for treatment in 2004. They foundhospitalization rates for injuries were 35 percent higherin sparsely populated rural counties and 27 percenthigher in more populated rural counties.

“The perception is that life in rural areas is peaceful, tranquil, serene,” Dr Jeffrey H Coben said in astatement. “If you just look at violence — personagainst person — the rates are higher in urban areas. But for virtually every other cause of trauma, the risksare substantially greater in rural areas.”

The study, published in the American Journal ofPreventive Medicine, found that as population densitydecreases, the risk continues to increase.—Internet

OAKLAND, 27 Dec — Achild’s diagnosis ofattention deficithyperactivity disorder islinked to his or hermother’s use of healthservices, US researcherssaid.

“The diagnoses andhealth care utilization thata mother receives prior tohaving her child is

predictive of having achild who is diagnosedwith ADHD,” lead authorG Thomas Ray of KaiserPermanente in NorthernCalifornia said in astatement.

Using records from aNorthern CaliforniaKaiser Permanentedatabase, the researchersidentified three groups —

mothers of children withADHD, mothers ofchildren without ADHDand mothers of childrenwith asthma.

The study, published inthe January issue of thejournal Medical Care, found mothers of childrenwith ADHD spent about$1,000 more on healthcarein the year before and inthe two years followingthe birth of their child, compared to mothers whodid not have children withADHD, and they had moreillnesses than mothers ofchildren with asthma did.

“The mothers ofchildren who arediagnosed with ADHD aremore likely to bediagnosed with healthconditions such asdepression and anxietydisorder and use morehealth services in the yearprior to, and the two yearsafter, the birth of theirchild, than mothers ofchildren without ADHDor the mothers of childrenwith asthma,” Ray said ina statement.

Mexico suspends purchases from30 US meat plants

CHICAGO, 27 Dec—Mexico suspended pur-chases from 30 US meatplants due to sanitaryissues, which sent UScattle and hog pricessharply lower on Fridayand prompted speculationthe ban was retaliationagainst a US labeling law.Early on Friday, USanalysts said the bans werelikely because of Mexico'sopposition to a recentlyenacted meat labellinglaw. The law, commonlycalled Country-of-OriginLabelling or COOL,requires that meatpackages in US super-markets carry labelsstating the countries wherethe meat animals wereraised. Mexico and the

US Agriculture Depar-tment both denied theretaliation charge.“Countries would gothrough disputesettlement under either(the North American FreeTrade Agreement) or(World Trade Organ-ization)—not use theaction of plant-by-plantdelistment,” said Amanda

Eamich of USDA FoodSafety and InspectionService.

USDA listed theaffected plants on itswebsite on Friday, but thesuspensions becameeffective on Tuesday. Thelisted plants produce beef, lamb, pork, and poultryand can be found here.

When we got to the foot of Mt. Popa, a land ofmagnolia, my wristwatch showed 1 p.m.

The scenery of the area in the morning sunshine inthe cold season was found so beautiful and pleasant thatit was like an artistic painting.

Factories and mills throughout the country are seenoperating at full capacity. During the period from 1988to date, the number of State-owned factories has in-creased to 793 from 624, and private-owned factories,to 113,000 from 35,000.

While in Popa region, we seized a good opportu-nity to visit Pozzolan Factory of the Hydropower

Implementation Department under the Ministry of Elec-tric Power No. 1. The visit was very rewarding becausewe gained a lot of knowledge of natural pozzolan.

Natural pozzolan is ash of lava forced out involcanic eruptions. When a volcano is active, hot lavaand ash are forced to get out of it. They becomegradually cold when they touch air outside the vol-cano. After all, they form themselves into crystals.Based on the formation, some volcanoes take a longtime, but some take a short period to become cold aftertheir eruptions, and in this regard, the time gap haseffect on formation and size of lava and ash. If process

is quick, they do not have enough time to formthemselves into crystals, and the size of the particlesare small. Silica and alumina in ashes react well withlime and water when they are still mild. If so, theproduct's characteristics are the same as that ofcement.

Pozzolan was named after Puzzuoli in Italy thatcame under ashes of volcano Mt. Vesuvius in AD 79.

Ash of a volcano is called natural pozzolan, andcoal ash, which take pozzolanic reaction, pozzolanicmaterial.

New anti-cancer components ofextra-virgin olive oil revealed

SCIENCEDAILY, 27 Dec — Good quality extra-virgin olive oil contains health-relevant chemicals,

‘phytochemicals’, that can trigger cancer cell death.New research sheds more light on the suspectedassociation between olive oil-rich Mediterranean di-ets and reductions in breast cancer risk.

Javier Menendez from the Catalan Institute ofOncology and Antonio Segura-Carretero from theUniversity of Granada in Spain led a team of re-searchers who set out to investigate which parts ofolive oil were most active against cancer. Menendezsaid, “Our findings reveal for the first time that all themajor complex phenols present in extra-virgin oliveoil drastically suppress overexpression of the cancergene HER2 in human breast cancer cells”.

Extra-virgin olive oil is the oil that results frompressing olives without the use of heat or chemicaltreatments. It contains phytochemicals that are other-wise lost in the refining process. Menendez andcolleagues separated the oil into fractions and testedthese against breast cancer cells in lab experiments. All the fractions containing the major extra-virginphytochemical polyphenols (lignans and secoiridoids)were found to effectively inhibit HER2.
