THE YEAR 2008 - 2009 There have been a great number of events this year, indeed, far too many to include in this publication, but it is hoped that recognition has been given to every achievement, small and great, be it in the weekly newsletter, being awarded a Principal’s Commendation certificate, the termly school magazine, Schoolink, or in special edition publications such as the sports and musical programmes. The editorial team are looking forward with enthusiasm to the next academic year when we will no doubt be joined by new members and new talent - with the start of the IB Film Studies module, it is hoped the news will also be delivered in short news doumentaries. 2008-2009: reviewing a super year!

During the four years I have been based at BISS it has never failed to amaze me how talented our students are. The students which form our school community bring a wealth of diverse cultural and educational experiences with them and together create an array of talent which quite simply takes your breath away. It is with immense pride that I reflect on their achievements this year, not only their high academic standards which they

consistently strive towards pushing themselves day in and out, but the way in which their social skills develop. The social graces they possess which make visitors comment upon again and again, their ability to embark on new challenges, welcome new children into the school and ability to embrace all opportunities handed their way.

There have been many highlights this year and I am unable to comment on them all, but I hope you will reflect upon and enjoy the events of the past 12 months as you flick through the pages of this book. To the children, staff and parents who made all of the moments of awe and wonder a reality we send you our heart-felt thanks.

To the students who leave our school community I wish you every success in your future travels and hope you carry with you fond memories of your time here.

A NOTE OF THANKS

The Primary Teaching Staff would like to thank all the pupils and parents for their hardwork and support throughout this academic year. We hope you all have a very happy summer break and look forward to welcoming you back for the new term. We would also like to offer our best wishes to the pupils and their families who are leaving the school this year - we wish you every success for the future.

The last two terms of the school year since I took up the post of Principal at BISS Puxi have simply flown by. There is no doubt that the school is an incredibly busy and vibrant place.

A great deal has been achieved academically. Our first cohort of IB students have completed their two year course and our Year 11 IGCSE cohort this year is the biggest in the school’s four year history, as is the Year 6 group taking KS2 SATS. We look forward to receiving their results later this summer.

The school has enjoyed a good deal of success across a variety of areas of extra curricular activity in sport, music art and drama, many of which are featured and celebrated in the pages of this yearbook. The range and breadth of our provision is perhaps best illustrated by the expressive arts 2008/9 which have seen wonderful and diverse performances from the Pre-Nursery/Nursery Concert (featuring the singing and hopping frogs), through the KS2 production of Uncle Crumble’s Mad Machine to the outstanding whole school production of Grease-The Musical.

Children across the age groups have also experienced a broad range of educational trips and excursions. Our Year 6 made a hugely successful trip along the Yangtze. The schools’ Duke of Edinburgh International

Award scheme has been very successful and is now by some distance the biggest in the city. It will grow again in 2009/10 as next year’s Year 12’s embark upon the gold award programme. CAS, sport and subject specific trips have also provided our pupils with memorable and important learning experiences away from our campus.

The school’s contribution to the local community and to good causes in China and the Far East are also a source of a good deal of pride. The school’s fund raising efforts have benefitted a number of children and education orientated charities, most notably The Spring Bud School in Gansu province. Our parent company Nord Anglia has provided the funds to rebuild the school ruined by last year’s earthquake and the PFA and the pupil body have raised over 340,000 RMB to provide resources for the school and other causes.

There has therefore been a good deal to celebrate and enjoy. However, good schools should not rest on their laurels. We have reorganised our internal structures to help aid communication and further improve our delivery and monitoring of teaching and learning. There are also changes that will further develop and upgraded our programme of after school extra curricular activities for 2009/10. Finally and perhaps most noteworthy are the building plans which will result in a reunification of the two campuses back on the original site at Jinguang Road. The resultant unified campus will house an impressive array of facilities including two indoor swimming pools, two sports halls and two theatres. It will also feature upgraded music, science, art and ICT facilities and have the benefit of extensive outdoor facilities such as playing fields and recreation areas.

We have had a very successful and hugely enjoyable year. I would like to thank the entire school community for their whole hearted support of all that we have undertaken this year. We can look back on the year and reflect on some wonderful experiences and progress. I would also like to thank all of the staff and pupils for their input into this very fine record of the year.

I hope you all have a relaxing and enjoyable summer break and I look forward to welcoming many of you back in August and to working with you all in further developing our school and its provision.

OPENING SHOT Mini-Olympics - pupils and parents join together to form the five rings of the Olympic Movement. The five

rings represent the five major regions of the world: Africa, the Americas, Asia, Europe and Oceania - every national flag in

the world includes one of the five colours, which are blue, yellow, black, green and red.


NEW YEAR

During the Chinese New Year celebration week, several activities were organised by the Mandarin Department. The CNY activity day was divided into three themes and children from each year group had the opportunity to attend the Kung Fu training, Chinese craft stalls and a shadow puppet show. Children had the opportunity to enter the Hong Bao Design Competition and the Lantern Riddles Competition, which were held throughout through the week. The Chinese New Year celebration ended with a spectacular Year 3 Chinese production complete with some memorable dragon dancing.

THE YEAR OF THE OX


BOOK WEEK

In the Autumn Term, we had a fabulous week of ‘Rhyme and Rhythm’ book week activities. The primary children were involved in multicultural reading and writing activities, they performed poems individually and as a year group and they listened to and told stories in different languages. The week culminated in a fantastic book character parade.

A LITERARY TREAT


MINI-OLYMPICS

Back in early September, the primary school hosted its own ‘Mini Olympics’. Parents, staff and children gathered together for a spectacular opening ceremony. The captivated audience was thrilled when the FUWA appeared, as well as daring Chinese acrobats and dancing lions. Parents joined in by forming one of the Olympic rings, and many stayed to support the children in a range of sporting events throughout the highly successful day.

The Year 6 pupils set out on an exciting voyage of discovery in March 2009, travelling down the fabled Yangtze River and visiting a host of sites.

The Year 6 Yangtze cruise proved to be an exciting journey and wonderful experience for both pupils and teachers alike. We all have excellent memories of our time spent aboard the Century Star including; putting on our glad rags and dancing the night away at the disco, and the hilarious puppet show and fantastic hoola moves we witnessed during the talent show.

The excursions were both enlightening and fun. We had a super time at the zoo, a spooky experience at Fengdu Ghost City and heard an interesting myth at Yellow Crane Tower. The most heartwarming event was our visit to Guanyin Dang Primary School. It was touching to plant trees alongside the students as a mark of the relationship we have formed with the school.

A wonderful trip with so many unforgettable memories for everyone involved.

A DIARY OF THE YEAR 6 YANGTZE CRUISE BY MARC SLEIMAN, CLASS 6I

Monday 22/3/2009

I got to school and found the whole of Year 6 in the cafeteria. The luggage was piled in the corner ready to get taken to our cruise ship. I had to find my group leader and get registered so they knew I was here. I felt nervous, yet excited, as it was the first time that I would go on a cruise along the Yangtze River. It was at least thirty minutes before we clambered onto the school bus leaving the school behind us. It took at least one hour and a half to get to Pudong airport. My group and I went and put our luggage onto the plane. We finally hurried past security and got our plane tickets, and then boarded the plane. After we landed at Chongqing airport, we visited the zoo where we saw pandas, tigers and hippos! (The pandas didn’t look too happy about being photographed!) At the end, my group and I were exhausted due to all that walking, so we staggered onto the bus and drove to our boat. When we got to our boat, we were showed the safety drills, our rooms and the other accessories. After dinner we had a quiz and my team won! It was already time to go to bed, and when my head touched the pillow I was fast asleep.

Tuesday 23/3/2009

At 7:00 our doorbell rang, signaling us to get out of our beds. At 7:25, Year 6 met in our meeting place and we discussed the plans for that day. At 7:30, we all scampered down to breakfast and had a gourmet feast with eggs, pancakes, bacon and cereal! I was full after that. We had 5 minutes to get ready for the day, so I packed my day sack and we met in our meeting place again. Today everyone was eager to get going as we were going to go to the ghost town of Fengdu! Our teachers told us it was going to be remarkable! I couldn’t wait! When we got there we went to the torture chambers, the King of Death and the sacred temple. It was awesome and we went shopping after. Later we went back to the cruise ship and had a fabulous dinner and we had our talent show! After that we had the choice to see the crew do some dancing and singing. I stayed, but most of the other people left. They thought it was going to be bad, but it turned out to be radical!


Wednesday 24/3/2009

At 9:00, we did activities with our group. We also sailed through the first and second of the Three Gorges. Then we had lunch. Twenty minutes later, some residents of a small city, that was destroyed because of the Three Gorges Dam visited us. Then, our guide gave us an information-filled lecture about the Three Gorges Dam. At 6:00, we had an hour to get prepared for our disco and to get ready to eat dinner. One hour later, my group and I had a scrumptious dinner of fries and burgers. When it was finally time for the disco, we danced and danced until our legs and hands were aching! It was the best disco I’ve ever been to. When we were all exhausted, the teachers told us to get ready for bed and to prepare ourselves for tomorrow. I fell asleep instantly.

Thursday 25/3/2009

Today, we were woken up at 6:30 because we had to get our bags outside by 7:00. At 7:45 they told us what was happening today, and then we had to leave the boat. We visited the Three Gorges Dam, which is the biggest project in China since the Great Wall. The dam was massive. After our visit, we clambered onto our bus and travelled to Yichang. Later on, we reached the Guanyin Dang village school and we asked them questions, then at 4:30 travelled to Wuhan. At 7:30, we arrived at our hotel in Wuhan and we had dinner. At 8:15, we were shown our rooms and we got to relax. Afterward, the teachers told us what we were going to do tomorrow. I got prepared and went to bed.

Friday 26/3/2009

Today we were woken up at 6:30 and at 7:00 we had breakfast. We left our hotel in Wuhan and we visited the Yellow Crane Tower. We then went to McDonalds and the teachers gave out the prizes for the tidiest room, best bargainer, etc. We had to leave McDonalds and travel to Wuhan airport. Our flight left Wuhan at 3:40 and we arrived at shanghai airport at 5:00. It then took our bus 2 hours to arrive back at school. Our parents were waiting for us at school as we arrived. The trip was fantastic!

There have been many exciting school excursions throughout the school. They have all helped to bring learning alive and have provided the pupils with hands on experience of the topics they have studied.

A SPOT OF GARDENING, NURSERY

As part of their topic work, the children in Nursery had the opportunity to visit a local organic farm. Here they got to learn about how things grow and the things that are needed to help them grow. It was a fantastic learning experience for the children to see what certain vegetables look like and the types of plants that support the growth of vegetables and fruit.

FUN AND GAMES IN THE SAND, YEAR 2

The Year 2 children had a fantastic day at a beach along the coast in Pudong. The sun shone and the children very sensibly slapped the sun block on, wore a hat and protected their eyes with sunglasses. As well as a picnic lunch (no doubt with sand in their sandwiches!) the children took the opportunity to partake in all those fun beach activities…build-ing sandcastles…paddling in the water…playing games on the beach. On returning to school as part of their topic on the Seaside the children were able to describe so many differences with what the seaside is like today compared with the past.


THE ZOOThe Zoo

A WILD ADVENTURE, YEAR 1

The trip to Shanghai Zoo gave the opportunity for the Year 1 children to get up close to some interesting animals…the giraffes certainly proved to be very popular while the monkeys were very entertaining. Much was learnt on the day and it really helped to give the children a better understanding of the Animal topic which the children had been learning about in their lessons.

The richness and diversity of our international student body help make the school a vibrant and engaging place - a fact celebrated with a special International Week observance.

This year’s International Week certainly proved to be the biggest and most eventful the school has ever seen and the children clearly gained so much from it. There were a range of activities including internationally themed lessons, food fairs, a gala concert, the Year 3 production and to round the week off we had the international parade and lion dancing.

It has been wonderful to see so many children across different year groups dressed up as characters and people from the various topics which are studied. Theme Days have provided the children with a unique opportunity to get into role and learn more about that period from experiencing it through exciting activities.

The children in Year 2 loved the opportunity to dress as pirates and walk the plank. Throughout the day there were many exciting activities that gave the children an insight into life as a Pirate…though mostly through works of fiction!

A GLIMPSE INTO THE DISTANT PAST, YEAR 3

The children in Year 3 loved the opportunity to take on the role of being a Viking for the day and took part in many activities linked to their topic. A Viking feast was enjoyed by all and classes throughout the school were thrilled when a group of marauding Vikings invaded their lessons! It’s a day like this that brings a topic alive for the children studying it and the experiences from it will certainly be lodged in their memories for a very long time.


RAINFOREST DAYRainforest Day

A JUNGLE PARADISE IN THE CLASSROOM, YEAR 2

This proved to be a very memorable day for the children in Year 2. As part of their topic on Rainforests, the children were all encouraged to come to school dressed as a rainforest animal (or plant). It was certainly a very colourful sight and throughout the day the children loved taking part in a wide range of activities linked to the theme of rainforests.


VICTORIAN DAYVictorian Day

THE WORLD OF DICKENS, YEAR 5

The children in Year 5 were transported back over 150 years ago to the Victorian era and got to experience what school life was like back then. Strict teachers, formal teaching – drill, chanting, dictation, handwriting and use of chalkboard slates gave the children a very good impression of what school was like. The visit from the school inspector added more drama to the day and the children were able to spend their break time playing traditional Victorian games. By the end of the day everyone was quite relieved to be back to modern day schooling…particularly the teachers!


Fairytale Day

BOOK CHARACTERS, YEAR 1

We all remember tales from our childhood - stories of dancing princesses escaping to an underground world of music and balls, the finding of a magic ring baked in a cake, the agony of a sister trying to free her brothers from a spell that has changed them into swans - these elements of fairy tales often stay with us long after childhood has passed. The pupils in Year 2 had the opportunity to bring to life their favourite characters, dressing in costume on a day that saw the Year 2 corridor transformed into a magical realm.


Extra Curricular Activities

ECA’s in the primary school provide the children with activities and clubs which complement the curriculum and provide opportunities for pupils to develop skills and interests beyond those taught within the classroom. This year we have had a wide range of clubs – here is a selection below:

KS2 production, football, badminton, netball, 3D puppet making, art club, library club, K-nex club, dodgeball, basketball, choir, board games, sudoku, chess club, creative writing, poetry club, book-to-film club, science, ICT club, swim for fun, mask design, paper weaving and table tennis.

ECAOUTSIDE THE CLASSROOM


EAL

1YEAR ONE

Beginning school is a wonderful, happy and daunting time for most children and their families. Children are expected to face new challenges and to develop independence. For EAL students the challenges they face can be even greater as they may only have a very limited understanding of the language spoken at school.

The Year 1 EAL programme is designed to nurture the child by providing a fully supported environment in which children will develop language skills in order to communicate and understand at school. The programme is fun, interactional and takes into account the individual needs of the learner. Children at this stage of their development learn by doing.


ENGLISH AS AN ADDITIONAL LANGUAGE

YEAR TWO

As children enter their second year of school, EAL students benefit from the support provided by specialist teachers. Students are withdrawn from their class to join with students of similar ability in order to improve their English language skills together. The focus of the lessons encourages development in Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing whilst previewing and reviewing much of their class content. Topics this year have included The Great Fire of London, Forces and Movement, Traditional Stories, Rainforest and Environment, Poetry, Narrative, Famous People and Materials.

YEAR THREE

EAL is colourful, fun and enjoyable for all the children who attend. Being in the first year of Key Stage 2 is important for all students and Year 3 students are assisted by specialist teachers in withdrawal lessons as well as in class support. The progress they have made this year is amazing.


EAL

4YEAR FOUR

In Year 4 pupils focus a great deal on the four language skills of Speaking, Reading, Writing and Listening. We also make our lessons relevant to the mainstream curriculum so that pupils develop more understanding of the subject delivered in their regular classes. In doing this, we help to raise pupil’s self-esteem, which is essential in their learning and further development. We have small classes that enable us to meet the student’s individual needs and to enrich their language skills. All of these factors are of great importance in reaching the goals within the curriculum.


ENGLISH AS AN ADDITIONAL LANGUAGE

YEAR FIVE

As with all EAL year groups, our primary concern is to help children make the most of the school curriculum. This is especially true in Year 5 where students encounter a great deal of difficult language and challenging assignments. Year 5 EAL work reflects the challenges students face in the classroom and aims to give them every opportunity to be a useful and vocal member of their form group.

YEAR SIX

In Year 6 our aim is to help children make the most of the school curriculum and to integrate into the school environment as smoothly and fully as possible.

Year 6 EAL work reflects the challenges students encounter in the classroom and gives pupils every opportunity to be an active participant of their form and prepare Year 6 EAL students to be successful in their end of year primary school assessments.


I am happy to say that I was delighted to see how pupils have shown great enthusiasm in learning and practising French throughout the whole year in Primary.

Pupils learn and develop their speaking, writing, reading and listening skills in French by doing a variety of activities like role-plays, listening to and singing songs, watching and interacting with videos and learning games based on various ICT-based activities. Finally they are also challenged to use French in doing writing and reading activities under the form of different types of stimulating and exciting exercises.

Year 3 and Year 4 BeginnersPupils have learnt to greet others, introduce themselves and their family, count to 39, learn the months of the year, say when their birthday is, and listen for sounds, rhymes and rhythms. They have also developed their skills in talking about what activities they are doing well, saying what they can do and asking permission. Finally they have learnt about colours and describing themselves and others.

Year 5Pupils have learnt to greet others, introduce themselves, to say what their favourite movie is, expressing likes and dislikes, justifying their opinions, saying what they would like, learning to count to 60 and paying in euros. They have also been speaking about transportation, responding to a song, and understanding, responding and giving instructions. Finally, they developed skills in making simple statements about activities and diet.

Year 6Pupils have learnt how to speak about their nationalities, their home country and other countries, to speak about their city, to name places and giving instructions for directions. They also have studied how to speak about clothing, colours and how to describe them. After learning how to count, pupils have learnt to say what time it is, to describe their school and their activities.

FRENCHA YEAR OF LEARNING


The House System has continued to grow this year and has branched out into many new areas of learning and really celebrated team work and cooperation. Throughout each term we have had many exciting events – with Inter House Sporting Competitions being a permanent fixture. The ever popular Christmas General Knowledge Quizzes returned, but this year they were also extended to celebrate internationalism at BISS during International Week. This year also saw the return of the Spelling Bee, Mental Mathematician and Public Speaking competitions. In addition to these we had the first musical Inter House event in the form of a Stars in their Eyes Singing Competition. All in all a very busy year for Inter House and no doubt the final assembly of the year will be a thrilling occasion as the yearly house point totals are announced.

UNCLE CRUMBLE’S MAD MACHINE, KEY STAGE 2

Over two nights the Primary Theatre was packed to the rafters with excited parents and pupils ready to join Uncle Crumble and his favourite nieces and nephews on an incredible journey through time. The show certainly lived up to expectations and the audiences were dazzled by spectacular sets, costumes and visual effects. The huge cast - over 120 children also excelled with both their acting and singing – it is something that will stay with all involved for a very long time!

A CLASSIC MUSICAL

Each year many schools around the world put on a school ‘musical’. There are many reasons for this - an opportunity for children to be part of something ‘special’; a performance that shows the depth of talent across a large number of year levels; to provide an evening of outstanding entertainment for the whole school community and beyond, and most important of all – to give all those involved, from students to staff, an experience that they will take with them for the rest of their lives no matter how big or small a part they had to play in its production.

A WEALTH OF TALENT

During the school year there were two musical showcases which gave students taking private instrument or voice lessons at BISS the opportunity to perform to a welcoming and responsive audience. Concerts like this are important in a child’s musical progress as it helps them develop their personal confidence and self esteem. It also encourages them to strive for even higher levels of personal excellence and achievement.


TUDOR ROSETudor Rose

A LOOK BACK IN TIME, YEAR 4

The Year 4 epic production ‘Tudor Rose’ told the story of the Tudor Monarchs, most notably King Henry VIII and Queen Elizabeth I and the interactions between the major powers of Europe during the 16th century. This, without argument, was one of the most colourful periods of British history made all the more so by the larger than life King Henry VIII - famous for his retort, ‘off with her head!’ Although a complex script to work with, all the students involved excelled and performed a memorable show in front of a packed house of parents who enjoyed every second. Rapturous applause drowned the theatre when the performance ended with a hearty version of ‘The Tudor Queen’, sung with all students on stage for their final bow. With everyone smiling from ear to ear in front of parents it goes without saying that the likes of this performance would not be possible without the hard work of all involved and everyone deserves another huge round of applause!


OUT OF THIS WORLDOut of this World

A GLIMPSE OF THE FUTURE, YEAR 5

At first view, one would be forgiven for thinking that this production had debuted on Broadway or the West End and was actually completing a world tour. But amazingly, no! This was the 2009, Year 5 Production, quite aptly named Out of this World. For Out of this World was exactly what was delivered by the outstanding cast and crew, some of whom were, even more shockingly, appearing for the first time in cameo roles.

The production opened to rave reviews, with audiences amazed at the costumes, lighting and convincing actors. Of particular note was French actor Pierre Novis who executed his role as the Captain of Aquarius Five brilliantly. A tale to remind us all that we must look after our earth or face the dire consequences, Out of this World is set to wow!

BRINGING THE COMMUNITY TOGETHER ON SPECIAL OCCASSIONS

Once again the Christmas Fayre proved to be a popular event with a rich variety of activities on offer, super gifts in the raffle, tasty food and superb weather with proceeds from the day going to the Spring Bud charity project.

CHRISTMAS FAYRE, DECEMBER 2008

Yet again we were fortunate as the sun shone for our 2008 Christmas Fayre. This allowed our many vendors to share and sell their wares outside for all to appreciate. Not only that but we were treated to some delicious food and beverage which many enjoyed as they watched the variety of musical performances from our own staff and pupils. The teachers and children also manned their own stalls with fun activities and games to play.


The highlight of the day though was definitely the fantastic hamper raffle that the PFA had organised. Everyone had their eye on the coffee hamper; the ice cream hamper and the Marks and Spencer hamper to name but a few and there were squeals of delight from the winners as the tickets were drawn. Who says Christmas is just for children….?


ChristmasPerformancesEarly Years and Key Stage 1 classes delight an audience of friends and family with their rendition of the Nativity, the Twelve Days of Christmas and a festive pantomime.


The children in Nursery perform a Nativity play to the delight of doting parents in the audience. Mr Thacker’s Nursery and Pre-Nursery classes delighted an

audience of friends and family with their rendition of the Nativity. It was an original adaptation written by Mr Thacker that told the traditional story of the Nativity

using songs which the children had learned in class. For most of the children it was their first performance on the big stage and it was an event which will be

remembered by family and friends for many years to come.

In the last week of the first term, there were a number of festive concerts attended by both pupils and parents. The teachers started preparations well in advance and the hardwork was evident in the quality of the performances. It was wonderful to see so many young children performing on such a big stage and it clearly took a great deal of courage.

The China Children and Teenagers Fund - an update from Gansu Province

SAll the proceeds from PFA 2008/09 will support the Spring Bud Charitable Project. This project has been set up through the China Children and Teenagers Fund to assist disadvantaged children in China who do not have access to education. The particular school we are helping is located in Tianshui, Gansu Province (immediately north of the Sichuan region) which was destroyed last May, 2008 by the devastating earthquake. The school is in an extremely remote area, where even before the earthquake it was not an easy matter for children to access the education that we take for granted.

As you may be aware, Nord Anglia is building a new school for these children. In October, 2008 the ground was broken at the new partner school, scheduled to open at the end of August 2009. It will be named the Nord Anglia Spring Bud School and accommodates up to 180 children aged between seven and fourteen. The funding will be targeted at the construction of the school and the fitting out of seven classrooms.

The PFA funds in particular will be used to help buy support materials for the new school in order that this fantastic facility will be fully equipped with what the students need when it opens later in the year. They money raised will buy much needed materials and teaching support such as books, desks, stationery, computers, sports equipment and teacher training.

Charity Week

COMMUNITY AWARENESS, BY ZOE GREINDL, CLASS 6B

In early March, Year Six held a Charity Week to raise money for a rural school in Hubei Province. We had a Back to Front Day, where we went to school wearing our clothes back to front!

The Bake Sale was a big hit - we baked cakes at home and brought them to school and they were sold for 5 yuan to the other students.

We also had a really wacky day for the teachers and students of Year Six, we all had to come to school with a wacky hairstyle!

The last day of the the Charity Week involved the whole school who came in to school wearing their Pyjamas. This day was also the Year 6 Spring Fayre. We prepared games and stalls for the other pupils in the school to enjoy. It was also a very busy day for us, but everyone had loads of fun!

At the end of the week the money was counted…we raised 21,000 yuan for the rural school - Guanyin Dang Village School, which we would visit on our Yangtze Cruise Residential Trip. We all feel proud of our wonderful acheivement.
