If the root word ends in ‘y’ before a consonant letter and has more than one syllable, change the ‘y’ to an ‘i’ and add -ly. If the root word ends in ‘-le’, the ‘-le’ is changed to -ly, e.g. gentle – gently. If the root word ends in ‘-ic’, -ally is added rather than -ly, except in the word publicly. Some words have ‘ly’ added straight onto the root word, e.g. slow – slowly.
