Writing-L.I. – To create an organised plan for writing by using note-taking Dear High School Letter

This week we are returning to a focus on functional writing. We will be concentrating on planning an extended piece of writing by making useful notes. Towards the end of P7, pupils are always asked to produce some writing to pass along to their high school. The most important of these is a letter which is addressed as ‘Dear High School…’, in which you will write to your future school to let them know about yourself, say what you are looking forward to or what you are anxious about for high school, and to ask some questions you may have about your new school. Focusing on writing skills, it is important to remind yourself of good layout for a letter, which you can do by looking at the PowerPoint below and some sample letters.

r-writing-sample.pdf

What you will focus on this week is creating the plan and notes that will allow you to create an effective letter next week. You should plan by outlining in brief notes the information you would like to include in each of your paragraphs. The first and last paragraphs will be much like the examples you have looked at – an introductory paragraph explaining why you are writing, and a concluding paragraph wrapping up the message. The letter is to be about you and about looking ahead to high school, so it would make sense to split your letter in this way, and then decide what level of detail you want to go into. When writing about aspects of high school, you could mention how things work at your current school when asking questions or making statements about high school. Here are some ideas for paragraphs you could focus on:

You – First paragraph or two High School – Majority of letter

Family and friends New classmates and friends

Favourite subjects New teachers/many teachers each day

Hobbies and interests New subjects

Hopes for work/life/travel More responsibility/managing a timetable

Achievements/Highlights of primary school Making own way around a bigger school

Getting to and from school

Clubs and activity groups

Lunchtimes

Earlier starts

Homework

When you have made your notes, check for possible links between points you are making. For example, if you are someone who loves science and is excited about new science subjects at high school, you might note this and consider connectives that could link the two. If you mentioned a love of science when speaking about yourself, later in your letter you might say, ‘As I mentioned previously, I am someone who is very interested in science and, therefore, I am eagerly looking forward to the opportunities…’ Remember that the planning stage is where most of the work should be – as we always say in class, if you can create enough ideas now, the writing process becomes a simple matter of stitching all your points together with some good language choices.

Spelling-L.I. - L.I- To identify and use common spelling patterns to accurately spell familiar words. This week’s word list features the ‘shun’ sound, in which the words are all nouns and feature the ‘tion’ ending. Try to identify the root word in each one which will usually be a verb (action).

-tion

direction affection ventilation

caution vibration prescription

adoption celebration acclimatisation

emotion circulation participation

action composition dramatisation

eviction reflection indigestion

action description aggravation

fiction examination prioritisation

station exhibition preservation

reaction attention familiarisation

question precaution collaboration

relation sensation centralisation

fraction promotion recommendation

condition protection simplification

ambition quotation contemplation

addition addiction investigation

attention competition multiplication

devotion information conservation

education prediction

Choose 20 words from the list that you find reasonably challenging. Try to find other common elements of spelling rules within the words, such as double consonants and magic e. Check how many syllables and how many sounds there are in each word. For example: contemplation – has 4 syllables (con-tem-pla-tion) and is made of 12 distinct sounds (c-o-n-t-e-m-p-l-a-ti-o-n). It has ti making a ‘sh’ sound and a long a sound which is retained from the root word, contemplate.

Practise your words as we normally would in class using your jotter. Once you have copied and practiced the lists, get someone at home to quiz you on your list. Word building – choose ten words and create extensions of these words using common prefixes and suffixes. For this list, it is best to determine the root word and work from there. For example: ambition is a root word already and becomes ambitious / protection can be taken as its root word protect and then become protective. If you have signed up for Sumdog you can complete spelling games there. Additionally, you can use Doorway speller online from the link below: https://www.doorwayonline.org.uk/activities/speller/

Talking and Listening-L.I. - To learn about the D-Day landings by watching information videos which contain actual video footage of the event and listening to the recounts of veterans who took part in the landings. Your task this week is to watch and listen to video footage about the D-Day Landings. This will help you get a greater understanding of what happened on the lead up to the D-Day Landings and the event itself. The videos also let you hear from veterans reminiscing about their experiences of D-Day on the 75th anniversary of the event and gives an insight into what they experienced and their feelings/emotions. You don’t have to watch them all at the same time – spread them out over your week. Please try to watch the video footage in the order given below – Videos about the event and actual footage of events leading up to D-Day and D-Day itself https://www.bbc.co.uk/teach/class-clips-video/history-ks2-d-day/zf49rj6 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WdpzPMPGa5Q https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z5DVGt4c71E Veterans’ Stories https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bnlLgUU4VAY https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hMruLqIy-Pg https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IdvfJFU7lvE

Modern Languages-L.I. - To learn/revise the names for activities, sports and hobbies in French. We are going to spend the next few weeks working with activities, sports and hobbies. This week, we will focus on learning/revising how to say their names. Task 1 Using the following website, learn/revise the names of different hobbies/interests and sports. Don’t worry about learning how to say how you do these activities as we will be covering that next week. As always, make sure you can say the name of the activity/sport/hobby correctly. Use the site as follows – https://www.french-games.net/

1. Go to beginner level – choose Actiyity section – then Activity Hobbies - go through tutorial. After that, go back to Activity section – then Activity Sports – go through tutorial.

2. Go to intermediate level – choose Activity – then Hobbies A – go through tutorial. After that, go back to Activity section – then Hobbies B – go through tutorial.

The different levels/sections do repeat some of the hobbies/interests and sports but, by doing all of them, it means you get lots of practice and each section has new ones not covered in other sections. Task 2 Complete the matching activity sheet – no need to print just match by writing answers on your whiteboard and checking once you have finished.

Health and Wellbeing-L.I. - To recognise change as a constant in our lives and consider how we plan for and react to it.

We have been considering change as something ever-present in life and have been looking ahead to transition to high school. An important part of changes in life is to acknowledge that we cannot control everything and sometimes in life we will face sudden change. However, we do not have to be a rudderless ship. There are elements of change we can plan for and an important tool in our kit is to take note of the things we can affect and have some control over. High school is something you have not experienced before and there will be elements that are very hard to predict or know what the experience will be like. At the same time, there are a lot of things we can do to prepare for it. This week, you will explore some scenarios and consider how best to address them, priming yourself to be ready for situations. You will begin to practise some of the known aspects of high school, like managing a timetable and thinking about when and how to be independent in getting ready for your school day. Task 1: View the PowerPoint (in slideshow mode for the best experience) and consider the questions about moving on to high school. It would be very helpful to speak to someone else at home about some of the information in the PowerPoint. This should help a lot with your writing this week, too.

Primary to

Secondary Transition Powerpoint.ppt

Task 2: Use the Primary 7 Transition Scenario cards to think about some specific situations. The important part of this task is to consider action that might be taken to address concerns and issues brought about in a new situation – this is the planning and reacting from our learning intention.

Primary 7 Transition

Scenario Cards.pdf

Task 3: Open and save (or download a copy from Teams) of the Mock High School timetable. This is a made-up timetable to help you begin practising a key skill for high school life – personal organisation. You will have more responsibility around your learning day in high school and it will not be up to your teacher to tell you what is on each day. Your task is to view the timetable and check each night what you have on the next day. You should then consider what items you would need to take to school and you could make sure your bag is ready. You may want to use items from the house to represent each subject and could have someone do a spot-check on your bag to test your preparation skills.

Social Studies-L.I. - To learn about what happened in the D-Day landings (Operation Overlord) and how new technology helped the allied forces in this event, thereby enabling them to achieve their aim of invading France and pushing back the German Army. In the following work, you are going to gain an understanding of what happened during the D-Day Landings (Operation Overlord). This event involved British, American and Canadian troops in the invasion of France to push back the Germans and retake France. By doing this, it then allowed them to take back the other countries that had been invaded by Germany. It is seen as the event that changed the direction of WW2. The D-Day Landings were a major turning point in the war. There would be further battles still to fight, however, D-Day clearly marked out the beginning of the end of the war. Operation Overlord took place on 6th June, 1944. In the years between Dunkirk and this event, allied air attacks had been used to weaken Germany by attacking roads, railways, factories, cities etc. Operation Overlord completed its mission fully on 30th August 1944, when the last of the Germans retreated from France. Task 1 Complete the comprehension task in the following link. The higher the star level you complete, the more information you will gain from the comprehension task.

RME/Science/Technology- L.I. - To be able to identify different clouds. This week’s science is a bit of a fun activity. We are getting many different cloud formations in the sky at the moment, this activity will help you identify them and understand how they are formed. Please follow the link below and scroll down to Activity 2 – Clouds.

https://www.dundeesciencecentre.org.uk/weather-week (this is the Dundee Science Centre website – Home Learning section) Read over the page and watch the Cloud spotting Guide. Do as many of the activities as you like. Happy cloud spotting! The STEM challenge this week is Lego Maze. Design a Lego maze for a marble (or a small rolled up bit of foil). You could design some obstacles in the maze for the marble to go through. Be as creative as you like. Ask someone else in your household to try it out. Here is an example.

Expressive Art (Drama/Music/Art)-L.I. - To create music, experimenting with timbre.

W.W II Graphic Score Music often tells a story – ‘PROGRAMME MUSIC’. That story can also be shown as a drawing, using pictures rather than conventional music notation, (notes on stave). Use the document below with these tasks.

Music

25.05.2020.docx

1. Think of a scene from W.W II. It could be an air raid, a bomb falling and the explosion afterwards, a celebration after the war, soldiers in training……. your choice – it will be a very short composition, just lasting 10 / 20 / 30 seconds……. again, you decide!

2. Try to visualise the sounds you would like (try to have three different sounds)….. eg. Perhaps wooden, metal, plastic??? ( If you have ‘real’ instrument(s) at home, you could use these.)

3. Sometimes closing your eyes helps you think about the sound…… is it hard, soft, bright, dull etc. Does the sound fade away….. lots or very little resonance.

4. The drawings of the ‘instrument’ should be a clear picture representing the sound rather than an actual drawing of the actual object or instrument – eg. a spikey shape, or a wiggly line, or a squiggly shape etc.

5. Look at the first grid (below), in each of the top three boxes, draw the shape of the sound of your chosen object / instrument. Give the object a name if it isn’t a ‘real’ instrument.

6. Underneath the box with your drawing, you will see a bow saying TIMBRE. In this box you are to write down the word(s) that describe the sound. The word TIMBRE refers to unique tone and sound. Words to help – bright, dull, sharp, spikey, light, soft, mellow, dark, boomy, harsh, piercing, heavy, clear, unclear, cold, warm………… you may think of many more!

7. You should now have three pictures and words to describe their sound in the TIMBRE box underneath your pictures.

8. In the lower half of this grid, you will see another three boxes. Again, write the name you have given your ’instrument’. Also, copy in your word(s) used for TIMBRE.

9. In the middle section, where it says PITCH, draw your object up high or down low, or in the middle depending on what sound you think it makes.

10. Now, on grid 2, on the left, in the empty box, write the name of your ‘instrument’ and draw its symbol / picture.

11. Then in the long box to the right, draw the shape, either high or low or middle, as often as

you’d like that sound to play. 12. In the box below, do the same for your second ‘instrument’, so that you have two sounds

perhaps happening at the same time, or separately, or alternately…. Or…….. 13. Add your third box….. if you wish, you could add a fourth sound. 14. The composition lasts only the length of that box. You need to decide is it to be fast or slow or

a moderate TEMPO (remember that tempo refers to the speed!) 15. There is no right or wrong. This is your notation, choice of sounds and duration! 16. Finally can you think of a name for this?
