Benjiro loves being an Australian citizen and he fondlyremembers the day he participated in an Australian

citizenship ceremony. One of the privileges of being an Australian citizen is that you can apply for an Australian

passport.

Benjiro Bear, now an Australian citizen, joins his friendsTilly Bilby and Pledge Platypus as they discuss the

Being an Australian citizen shows everyone that you are a

Meet two people who have become Australian citizens.

Have you ever thought about what being Australian means to you? Here’s what two new citizens haveto say about being Australian:

Damien Leith, who was born in Ireland, won the hearts of Australian

television viewers and was voted winner of ‘Australian Idol 2006’.

As part of Australia Day 2007 celebrations in Canberra, Damien per formed

his hit single ‘Night of my Life’ for a crowd of 35,000 people at Parliament

House and a television audience of more than one million – but they werein for one more special treat, when Damien became an Australian citizen.

“I’m extremely proud and, to be honest, also extremely humbled. It’s a bit

overwhelming to come here from Ireland and to be taken in so kindly by Australia,” Damien said.

“I am absolutely honoured and privileged to become an Australian citizen today.”

Wayne Friedman was born in South Africa and moved to Australia with his

family in 1996.

When Wayne started school in Australia he made his first friend because one

of the students he met said to him, “You can be my friend if you will barrack

for Essendon”. Wayne agreed and to date he still follows Essendon. He was

excited to meet some Essendon greats when his family’s recent citizenship

ceremony was held at the Essendon Football Club’s Hall of Fame.

Wayne is a very talented basketball player and was recently invited to represent Australia in atournament in the United States of America. What an achievement! We hope to hear many success

stories about Wayne’s basketball career in the future.

Benjiro Bear is so proud to be an Australian citizen and share all the

responsibilities and privileges of other Australians. He is also a valued

member of his community.

Did you know that last year 103 350 people from more than 175

countries became Australian citizens at ceremonies held around

Australia? Since Australian citizenship was introduced on Australia Day

1949, more than four million people have become Australian citizens.

Australian citizenship ceremonies are very important occasions

for those who have chosen Australia as their new home.

Why are they important to Tilly, Pledge and Benjiro?

Tilly Bilby thinks Australian citizenship is important because:

it helps build our nation

it gives all Australians a shared identity

although Australians come from all over the world, Australian citizenship

unites us as a people and a nation

it allows migrants to feel welcome and become full members of our

Australian community.

Pledge Platypus knows that Australian citizens are able to:

live in Australia

apply for an Australian passport and leave and re-enter Australia without applying for a

resident return visa

vote to help elect Australia’s governments

nominate for election to parliament

seek assistance from Australia’s diplomatic representatives while overseas apply for a job in the defence forces

work in the public service

register children born overseas as Australian citizens by descent.

In return, Australian citizens are required to:

obey Australia’s laws

enrol on federal and state/territory electoral registers

vote in elections

serve on a jury, if called upon to do so

defend Australia, should the need arise.

Conduct a survey (include family members too) to discover how many students and/or their

families were born overseas and have become Australian citizens, and how many were born in

Australia. Graph the results.

Research the first Australian citizenship ceremony conducted in Australia. Where and when was it

held? Write a paragraph about what happened at that major event.

Create a collage of pictures from magazines and newspapers that depict Australians being good

Australian citizens and contributing to our society in a positive way.

As a class, decide what is going to be your class or school’s of ficial ‘Australian Citizenship Day

Great Aussie Sporting Activity’. Spend some time playing that game as part of your Australian

Citizenship Day activities.

Research the privileges and responsibilities of being a citizen of another country in the world.

Many towns and places in Australia have names that come from Indigenous or other languages.

Investigate some of these names in your local area. What do they mean?
