Pirelli Foundation Educational is the project that, since

2013, has been offering free teaching and creative

courses for schools of all types and levels. Its aim is

to introduce young people to the world of production

and work, illustrating the values on which Pirelli’s

corporate culture is based- Thanks to the wealth of

the company’s historical legacy, the issues dealt with

in the educational programme range from the history

and technology of tyres to corporate cinema, through

to robotics and road safety, and from photography to

the development of advertising graphics.

For the 2017-2018 academic year school year, Pirelli

Foundation Educational is revamping its courses for

primary schools with thematic courses and encounters.

Classroom courses

This year, exceptionally, the courses in the programme

will be organised directly in those classes that applied

for them: schools in the Milan area will thus have an

opportunity to put on interactive lessons coupled with

workshops lasting for a total of about two hours.

All the teaching courses consist of a theory lesson,

backed up by multimedia tools, and a workshop activity,

which allows the children to reinterpret what they have

learnt in a creative manner.

The staff of Pirelli Foundation Educational will go to the

schools with the materials they need for the activities,

which can be booked on the calendar in the Educational

section of the Foundation’s website.

Pirelli FoundationThe Pirelli Foundation has preserved documentation of the company’s history since it was founded in 1872, through to the present day. Among its over 3.5 kilometres of documents, the Historical Archive includes a section devoted to communication, the private archives of the Pirelli family, a number of house organs and magazines, including the complete series of Pirelli. Rivista di informazione e di tecnica and, since 2010, the Pirelli Technical and Scientific Library with over 16,000 volumes.As well as activities to promote and digitise its historical materials, the Pirelli Foundation produces publications, organises guided tours, conferences and cultural events, and designs and puts on exhibitions and displays, sometimes in collaboration with Italian and international cultural institutions.

From January 2018, Pirelli Foundation Educational

is also organising a series of thematic courses for a

number of classes at the same time, to examine several

issues concerning the past and present of Pirelli.

The sixth Cinema & History training and refresher

course, for teachers, consists of a series of meetings and

screenings, put on in collaboration with the Fondazione

Isec, Istituto per la Storia dell’Età Contemporanea, and

the Fondazione Cineteca Italiana.

What is a tyre tread and what is it for? The tread is one of the most important parts of a tyre and it is the result of long, skilful research by engineers, who work day in, day out, to create new designs that can improve tyre performance and safety.Be an engineer for a day yourself and design your own tyre tread!

Educational Objectives

The aim of the activity is to introduce young children to

the world of production and work. The children will have

fun learning about how rubber is extracted, what its

properties are and the main stages involved in making a

tyre. They will also find out what a project is and how to

put it into practice.

Activities

Just like real Pirelli engineers, the children will design their

own tyre tread, and then make it in plasticine.

A visual journey through some of Pirelli’s most stunning and iconic advertisements in the historical archive, created by artists who have made the history of graphic art during the company’s 145 years of visual communication.

By analysing some historic Pirelli advertisements, the chil-

dren will find out about the key elements in visual commu-

nication and in the language of advertising, as well as how

to create an advertisement.

Activities

After seeing some examples of artists’ advertisements

from the Pirelli Historical Archive, the children will create

their own original advertisement study complete with

slogan, logo and illustration for new Pirelli bicycle tyres.


CINEMA: WHAT A FEAT!

The funniest family of Lombard cave-dwellers, Mammut, Babbut, Figliut, from Pirelli’s famous Carosello TV commercials, will help the children explore the history of industrial cinema advertising.

Watching television and cinema commercials from the

Pirelli Historical Archive will teach the children the basic

elements required for making a company commercial,

using techniques borrowed from the pre-cinema age.

Activities

Our budding film directors will be asked to make an

animated movie commercial, starting out from a prepared

project. Each child will make their own animated flip book

and immediately see their own film come alive.

Photographs can be extremely important sources of information about the past, and they show how objects, things and people change over time.The Pirelli Historical Archive has hundreds of thousands of photographs taken over the past 145 years. Let’s look at some of these pictures together and find out how many things we can learn!

The main objective of the workshop is to have the children

reflect on how photos can act as historical evidence and be

used to investigate and understand the past. The children

will use photographs to learn how to identify and define

relations of cause and effect and also to arrange events in

sequence.

Activities

Divided into groups and equipped with tablets, the

children will be helped to examine some pictures from the

archive on their own. They will be asked to create their

own photographic documents, which will remind them of

their experience at Pirelli.

“Cinturatevi adeguatamente!” – “buckle up right”, says a historic advertisement, in a pun on the Pirelli Cinturato tyre. But what are the FIA Action for Road Safety campaign’s 10 golden rules today? And what can technology do for us? Let’s find out who’s hiding in the tyre, giving us the information we need for our trip, so that we can go even farther.

While playing games and reconstructing scenarios, the

children will have fun learning about the importance of road

safety and about the rules they need to follow when they

are out walking or cycling. They will also hone their powers

of observation, and their logical and practical skills, finding

out about new technologies, which are essential for moving

about safely.

Activities

The children will learn to make simple robots using everyday

materials and, in groups, they will create miniature roadmaps

to have fun directing their new “technological” friends as

they move about.

FOR A LEXICON OF THE CONTEMPORARY

WORLDTraining and refresher course

for teachers

The Pirelli Foundation, together with the Fondazione ISEC

and the Fondazione Cineteca Italiana, is promoting the

sixth edition of the free Cinema and History training and

refresher course for primary and upper- and lower-secon-

dary school teachers in the Lombardy Region.

This edition will introduce those taking part to some of the

great issues affecting the contemporary world: geopoliti-

cs, the new frontiers of work, the relationship between the

world of finance and the real economy. These are highly

topical issues not only in academic circles, but also in pu-

blic debate.

At the same time, they represent an essential challenge for

teachers who wish to help their students understand the

world they live in.

The course for teachers will consist of three lessons, a film

and three workshops..

The activities will take place from 3 o’clock in the afterno-

on, during the months of February and March 2018.
