@ Reddam
Dear Parents and Caregivers,
This week, the Kindergarten to Year 2 students took centre stage, literally, as they per-
formed three incredible shows of ‘Winnie the Pooh’ for large audiences in Adelaide Hall.
After just 4 weeks of rehearsals, Mr Dean Hattingh and a talented team of Reddam
House music tutors and class teachers created an absolutely thrilling experience for both
the little people on stage and the audiences alike. From the opening scene, with Pooh
Bear’s ‘tummy’ making a wild appearance, to the acknowledgement of Owl for her er-
ror in reading the ‘puzzling, terrifying note’, to the realisation that all the fuss was due to
a simply error on Christopher Robin’s note, the students were simply outstanding. It is at
times like these that one cannot deny the value of specialist drama and music lessons
from Kindergarten. The level of understanding about character, space, elocution and
body language was phenomenal. Furthermore, to see so many young students playing
the orchestra alongside high school students, music tutors, teachers and professionals
was inspiring.
Congratulations to the students for their outstanding production, to the musicians for the
incredible live orchestra, and to the backstage crew that quietly supports the produc-
tions. I would like to thank the parents and teachers who assisted with costumes, make-
up and hair. It seems like a small task, but it is huge. Thank you for your contribution. Fi-
nally, a very big thank you to Mr Dean Hattingh, Dr Michael McGregor, Mr Marcus
Bortolotti, Mrs Elli Bortolotti, the music department and the very dedicated class teachers
without whom this would not have been possible. We value your contribution to our
school greatly.
I am thrilled to congratulate Ethan Williams, Year 4, for his recent outstanding achieve-
ment in Tae-Kwon-Do which was achieved under the coaching of Joseph Seo, Red-
dam’s senior coach. Ethan was successful in attaining his black belt after completing his
grading and is our first student to achieve this level at Reddam House Primary School.
Well done, Ethan, on this exceptional feat and thank you to the dedicated coaches
who have mentored Ethan over the years.
Today, the students in Year 3 – 6 commenced their end of year examinations which they
did with positive attitudes and level headedness. After an intensive revision week, the
students are well prepared for these exams and I am sure their results will reflect the hard
work and effort that they have been putting in over the last few weeks.
This week, we heard the fantastic news that three of our very artistic students, Paige Ke-
meny (Year 4), Elana Pfitzner and Mia Maccormick (Year 6), have been selected as fi-
nalists in the 2015 ANZAC Art Awards competition, ‘Navy – Army – Airforce’. Their art-
works will be judged on Wednesday, 18 November. Congratulations Paige, Elana and
Mia for such a wonderful achievement. I am sure that the artworks you have created will
speak to the judges clearly and make a lasting impression on them. Good luck for the fi-
nal round!

Our topic ‘Space’ has really gripped the imagination and curiosity of our students. They have
been intrigued and have taken great delight in learning about the planets. They worked in
pairs and made their own visual representation of the Solar System. It was such fun creating
each planet with pastel and a coloured wash. They were quick to record our information
and add it to their display. Our classrooms are looking so beautiful with all the children’s work
and they are really proud of their efforts. Please pop in and take a look.
Just as the stars sparkle in the sky, it was our turn to shine on stage in our first production at
Reddam House. With absolute pride, our students watched our students took to the stage
with excitement and confidence as they performed in Winnie the Pooh. The costumes, the
make-up, the sets, props and orchestra all made it a wonderful magical evening which I am
sure will remain with them for a long time.

KINDERGARTEN
Year 1 have conducted some amazing food related Science experiments this past week.
Gia combined some different liquids to make an exploding bottle of foam!
Mariana showed us how to make lemons float and sink.
Henry demonstrated how to turn a solid into a liquid.
Leni made sultanas dance!
William and Saige made exploding volcanoes.
Hollie made different liquids separate.
Milo and Eli combined cola and Mentos to create exploding drinks.
Alexander separated the colours from Skittles.
What wonderful scientists we have in Year 1!

YEAR 1
As part of the HSIE unit "People in the Community," Year 2 had a very special visitor. Matthew
Ching's mum, Sue Ann, is an anaesthetist at the children's hospital. She explained to us what
her job is and how she helps children (and sometimes adults) fall into a deep sleep so they do
not feel any pain during an operation. Hamish, our patient, had broken his arm and needed
an operation to repair the bone. He was dressed for theatre, given some fluids via an IV drip
and then put to sleep with some gas. The children were very interested in the process of giv-
ing someone anaesthetic and were keen to share their personal experiences of hospital and
surgery with Sue Ann. Many of the students were intrigued and impressed by the amount of
study necessary to become first a doctor and then to specialise as an anaesthetist. It was a
fascinating morning and the children learnt a lot. Thank you Sue Ann!

YEAR 1
Winnie the Pooh
By Oscar Bakes
This week is the week of the K-2 production of Winnie the Pooh.
The main characters were Piglet, Tigger, Eeyore, Owl, Kanga, Roo
and Winnie the Pooh and his Tummy,
The Year 1 kids were rabbits, foxes, butterflies, lady bugs and also
frogs. The Kindergartners were just bees. They sang their bee song
four times.
I was a fox with a very hairy chest and a golden body. The frogs
had shiny spots on them and soccer pants. The rabbits had a
white furry body and big ears. The lady bugs had a red suit with
black spots. Butterflies had wings which had loads of different col-
ours.
It was a great musical. I want to do it over and over again!
YEAR 2
The Year 3 students have been working so hard and trying their best during revision week, The
teachers have been most impressed with their diligence and application. They have spent
time revising the content studied during the course of the semester and they have been able
to think about it in different ways. Students have had the opportunity to discuss what they
have been learning both at school with their teachers, and also at home with their family
members, which has certainly helped to consolidate information. Some students have really
enjoyed the experience and this is what they had to say about their final revision week for
2015.
“When I do revision I feel relaxed. Although revision might be hard you get lots of help from
your teachers.”
Sam Weidler
“I liked the experience of revision because it made me think and it made me learn more
about what I have been learning in the past term.” Sophie Marcolina
“The thing I like about revision is you can have fun studying at home, even if your Mum pan-
ics, it can still be fun!”
Finn Rosenberg
“I enjoy revision because I get to go through things that I have already learnt but may have
forgotten. I also like revision because when I am at home my parents can see how I am do-
ing at school.”
Kenya Martin
Well done Year 3 on all of your hard work and preparation. We wish you all the very best in
your exams!

YEAR 3
Year 4 students have had the opportunity to refine their
study skills and gain a better understanding of time man-
agement skills, in order to be better prepared, for their up
coming exams.
Some techniques Year 4 students looked at were:
The use of visual aids. For example filing cards, highlighters,
mind-mapping, sticky notes around the house.
How to soothe stress. They looked at how anxiety is one of
the biggest barriers to performing well in tests and ways to
minimise it.
Drawing up a timetable. Students were supported when
working on their own study timetable and also given one
created for them.

YEAR 4
In preparation for their exams, our Year 5 and 6 students have been busily preparing themselves for their
persuasive writing pieces that were very similar in nature.
In Year 5, our students were asked to think very carefully about the lessons learnt during their study of the
well-known Japanese picture book 'Sadako' and why they're important lessons to learn as Year 5 students.
Similarly, our Year 6 students were asked to think very carefully about their film study of either 'The Lion King'
or 'ET' and the lessons they also learnt which will have relevance to them in an ever-changing, modern
world. In Year 5, we expose our students to the PEEL (point, expand, example, link) strategy which in Year
6, is then extended upon to create the PETAL (point, expand, technique, analysis, link) structure to effec-
tively analyse and critique a text and it's use of key visual or language techniques.
It is very fair to say that our students are readily applying these structures to create very comprehensive
paragraphs. Here are two paragraphs written recently in the classroom. One was written by Jordan Rubin-
stein in Year 5, the other by Max Simmons in Year 6.
A extremely powerful lesson that we can learn from the life of Sadako is that we should have courage and
be brave, no matter what the situation. Being courageous and brave is very important because you might
find yourself in a situation one day in life where you need to be brave and find your inner strength. As Sa-
dako's illness progressed, instead of going on and on about the fact that she could die, she had the cour-
age to do something about it and that was to start creating her paper cranes as a way of tackling her ill-
ness. Although there were times where she thought that it wasn't worth it, she had the courage to keep
going but unfortunately, her life came to an end. At that point, she had created six hundred and fifty four
cranes. Clearly, this example highlights that we should have courage and be brave, no matter what the
outcome is. If it's good or bad, at least you have the courage to do something about it.
By Jordan Rubinstein
Another reason why the film 'The Lion King' is a very relevant film in our modern day world is because it
teaches us as Year 6 students at Reddam House about the importance of teamwork. In the scene 'Simba
Returns to Pride Rock', Simba's friends Nala, Pumba and Timone are there to support him and help him
take his rightful place as king of the animal kingdom. One technique used to highlight their support and
teamwork is the close-up shot of all four animals with their eyes peering above a tree branch. This symbolis-
es the bond that they all have with one another and the teamwork they are employing to help Simba be-
come king. This is relevant to us as Year 6 students because as we grow older and more independent, we
are faced with challenges of teamwork when performing together for group assessments or simply working
alongside one another. By developing these skills and learning this lesson, it is sure to be very beneficial.
