For the Colorifi cio San Marco being “sustainable” and having
an ethical approach means building a business identity,
being able to attract talent and obtain a reputation on an
international level.
But above all, it is synonymous of attention to the territory, its
people and its resources.
The fundamental problem with Aristotle’s ethical system was
the good of man, which he said only politics could resolve.
In this same way, the economy is busy meeting the needs
of man, but through the use of resources. Therefore the
attention towards sustainability is certainly positive, just like
the idea of doing good is one of the best performances for
managers. But are we sure this is enough? Talking about it
and becoming more aware of it is defi nitely important, but
it’s even more important to take positive steps to reach the
objective.
In economic systems, ethics does not seem to be an
important guide on conduct, but on the other hand we are
increasingly pressured on the topic of sustainability, which is
the concrete application of ethics into business activities, as
it forces us to look to future generations.
For us, the economic aspect can only be improved with a
close connection with ethics, also intended as long term
programming and permanent value building.

Assovernici is the association of the main
manufacturers of paint products in Italy.
The Colorifi cio San Marco, among the leaders
for paint products for the construction indust-
ry, can thus make its contribution to this new
association for the sector.
Assovernici gathers information about the
world of Colour and the construction industry
in order to promote research, awareness and
evolution of the market, all of which are impor-
tant topics in San Marco’s corporate policy.
Assovernici has also been recognized by CEPE
(Conseil Européen de l’Industrie des Peintures, des
Encres d’Imprimerie et des Couleurs d’Art).
In Piacenza, the fi rst edition of the 2011 CO-LOR EXPO will take place from March 18
to 20.It is the fi rst Italian event exclusively dedica-ted to the colour supply chain: fi nish coats, decorative coats, thermal insulation systems. You can touch the new products for 2011, participate in informational meetings dedica-ted to painters and retailers. The conference room inside Colorifi cio San
Marco’s stand will host a busy schedule of Short courses: for the technical training of painters and retailers dedicated to the new products for 2011.A portion of the stand will be completely de-dicated to demonstrations of the decorative fi -nishes from the Emozioni Veneziane line and the new Street life line with Roxidan.

The Colorifi cio San Marco participated in the Klimahouse 2011 Expo which was held from January 27-30 in Bolzano, Italy.
The Alto Adige expo, now in its 6th edition, has become the refe-rence trade show for the energy effi ciency and sustainable building sectors.In it’s stand set up in the ANIT area (National Association for Thermal and Acoustic Insulation), the Marcon Group presented the new pro-ducts for the Marcotherm external thermal insulation composite
system as well as the new EPD study (Environmental Product Declaration) for San Marco products.
Federico Corò, Technician in the Research & Development department for the Colorifi cio San Marco, held a conference about EPD during an information session in the ANIT area.

The new X Collection colour palette has an exclusive selection of 164 new colour sha-
des that can be created for wall enamels and water-based paints using the Marcromie tin-ting system. In the original X Collection presentation, the colours are presented in a precise chromatic ar-ray in order to help in the selecting of colours, encouraging original colour combinations. The stronger colours are displayed diagonally while the shades become lighter as they move away from the diagonal colours. This arrangement visually produces X’s that help consultation and colour selection.

They originate from public institutions, private rese-arch centres, large companies and individual inventors.The preparation, which recreates a model of an ideal City of Ideas, which corresponds to a
showcase made up of blocks of connecting cu-bicles where visitors can enter and exit. The path follows a fl uid and non-linear narra-tion that leaves the visitors free to learn, experi-ment, share and actively and creatively partici-pate in what is not intended to be work, but a workshop-laboratory for the open and collecti-ve building of the future that awaits Italy. With its products, the Colorifi cio San Marco, is hel-ping to colour this path in which the element of colour is a silent tour guide that accompa-
nies the visitors along the paths and tells the stories being narrated.The curator of the exhibit is Riccardo Luna, journalist, author, editor and director of the new Italian edition of WIRED.The preparations are the responsibility of the Luca Molinari agency, which continues its col-laboration with San Marco that began with the Biennial Architectural Exhibit.

On November 12, in the presence of the Treviso police commander, the Mayor of Treviso and the President of the Province, at the historic Palazzo dei Trecento in Treviso, 36 citizens from
Treviso province who are particularly distinguished in their respective fi elds were honoured with the Order of Merit for the Republic of Italy, granted through a Decree by the President of the Re-public.The President of the Colorifi cio San Marco was bestowed with the title of Knight. An award given for the social-economic contributions made on a local level. For the Colorifi cio San Marco this recognition represents a confi rmation of the growth objectives reached and how they have involved the territory in which the company operates.

The Colorifi cio San Marco is part of the San Marco Group, a leader in the paint and co-
atings sector for professional construction in Italy. Product quality, qualifi ed and reliable services, a capillary distribution network, a steady com-mitment to research and a culture that values ethics and responsibility are what characterize our commitment to excellence. Inspired by shared values within the company, we began a journey to evaluate the environ-mental impact of our products with the aim of
improving their performance.
The San Marco Group began a path of refl ec-tion and careful analysis of its conduct, eva-luating the entire life cycle of the product and identifying the areas of improvement that can bring about solid change.The Colorifi cio San Marco, true to its com-pany policy, wanted to certify the results throu-gh Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) to demonstrate the commitment and the begin-ning of a journey that will involve all sectors of
our company.
The EPD (Environmental Product Declaration) is a
type 3 ecolabel used by companies to publici-
ze their products’ environmental performance.
The procedure to obtain this certifi cation invol-
ves an obligatory LCA study and compliance
with a series of requirements, validation by an
external body and, fi nally, registration.
The Swedish EPD system has been selected,
which is internationally recognized, as it adhe-
res to the GedNet (Global Type III Environmental
Product Declarations network) circuit, which
harmonises EDP programmes developed by
individual countries.
EPD pre-certifi cation is awarded when the spe-
cifi c requirements for a certain product catego-
ry have not yet been defi ned and the company
obtaining it plays a proactive and exemplary
role for the successive EPD certifi cations.
The Colorifi cio San Marco is the fi rst company
in Italy to obtain an EPD pre-certifi cation for
paints.
To obtain this ecolabel, the Colorifi cio San
Marco had to carry out LCA studies. The LCA,
Life Cycle Assessment, is a tool that systemati-
cally evaluates the environmental impact of a
product through all phases of its life cycle, in-
tended as the extraction and processing of the
raw materials, production, transport, use and
disposal.
However, the usage and disposal phases were
not examined since they depend solely on the
individual use and are out of Colorifi cio San
Marco’s control.
The input resources (energy, water, etc.) and
the emissions to air and water were measured
for each of the processes in the analysed pha-
ses in order to calculate the relative environ-
mental impacts.
The Swedish EPD requires that the following
environmental indicators be calculated and ex-
pressly declared: global warming, ozone deple-
tion, acidifi cation, photochemical smog, acidi-
fi cation, eutrophication, energy content, the
consumption of resources, the consumption
of water, waste, the consumption of electricity
during manufacturing and the emissions of to-
xic substances to air and water.
The input resources (energy, water, etc.) and
the emissions to air and water were measured.

EPD pre-registrations for Marmorino Clas-
sico, Intonachino Minerale GF and Antica
Calce are available on San Marco’s website

GLOSSARYType 1 ecolabel: the product or service is certifi ed by an independent body and meets a series of threshold levels relating to the environmental performance. Follows ISO standard 14024.
Type 2 ecolabel: self-declaration based on the standard ISO 14021, does not require an outside certifi cation.
Type 3 ecolabel: is composed of a document on which the company publicizes the information relating to the environmental performance of its products. It requires external verifi cation and follows ISO standard 14025.
Carbon footprint of a product: sum of the greenhouse gas emissions generated during the product’s life cycle and expressed in kg or tons of CO2 (carbon dioxide) equivalent.
Virtual water of a product: volume of fresh water used to make a product in the diff erent stages of the production chain.
A journey of environmentalawareness
The Colorifi cio San Marco was one of the fi rst companies to off er water-based solutions
for enamels and stains back in 1982. Since then it has continued the commitment to
eliminate raw materials considered hazardous to humans and the environment. Lead,
chrome, cadmium and mercury based pigments and compounds have not been used for
many years; compounds classifi ed as carcinogenic, mutagenic or toxic to reproduction are
also not used.
The Supernatural line was created in 2005: zero VOC, solvent-free, hypo-allergenic
products.
The Greenspirit Line was created in 2009, which includes a series of high-tech products
for bioconstruction with low environmental impact.
At the beginning of 2011 three of our paints, Marmorino Classico, Antica Calce
and Intonachino Minerale GF obtained EPD pre-certifi cation, which indicates the
environmental impact of their life cycles.

The input resources (energy, water, etc.) and the emissions to air and water were measured for each of the processes in the analysed phases in order to calculate the relative environmental impacts.The Swedish EPD requires that the following environmental indicators be calculated and expressly declared: global warming, ozone depletion, acidifi cation, photochemical smog, acidifi cation, eutrophication, energy content, the consumption of resources, the consumption of water, waste, the consumption of electricity during manufacturing and the emissions of toxic substances to air and water.

To be in step with the times and to meet the needs of a continuously changing market,
the Marcotherm External Thermal Insulation Composite System is constantly being upda-ted with materials, certifi cations and commu-nications.The new version of the application manual was
improved with the new CE certifi cation for the Marcotherm WF system. Newly rendered images clearly show how sim-ple it is to use the new accessories. The new illustrations focus on construction details, pro-viding a clear guide for both the designer and the installer.
The 2011 edition of the instructional DVD in-cludes the applicational video for the Marco-therm system, which illustrates step-by-step the building of an External Thermal Insulation Composite System using diff erent insulation materials and fastening accessories.

The fi rst in Italy, the Colorifi cio San Marco has
also created an insurance that covers the initial
installation of external thermal insulation com-
posite systems.
This 10 year policy can be activated with a con-
tribution of just €100 with respect to the Mar-
cotherm policy.
To present the insurance policy system off ered
by the Colorifi cio San Marco, we created the
INSURANCE POLICIES folder, code 00226.

Since 1999 the Colorifi cio San Marco, in
collaboration with INA Assitalia, has been
off ering its customers the possibility of protec-
ting their work with a 5 year insurance policy
for San Marco products, or 10 years for the
Marcotherm System.
Confi dent in the quality of its products, the Co-
lorifi cio San Marco has created an insurance
policy system that can off er safety and serenity
at a competitive price which doesn’t have a si-
gnifi cant eff ect on the project costs.
179 policies were opened in 2010 and for
Marcotherm alone, more than 3 million Euros
worth of projects were insured.

Again this year the Colorifi cio San Marco, in collaboration with Confartigianato
and the Sopraintendenza ai Beni Culturali di Venezia (Offi ce for the Protection of Ve-netian Cultural Heritage), is off ering training related to the territory and Venice tradition with a course dedicated to materials that characterized the history and architecture of the city: Marmorino and stuccos.The number of registrations received from the Confartigianato Venezia exceeded 100 within a few weeks of its publication. A strict selection allowed 20 candidates, cho-sen for their motivation and their training path, to participate in the lessons that began in February 2011.The course, which covers 100 hours, is direc-ted towards artistic material students, archi-tects, curators, restorers and decorators and focuses on introducing and orienting young professionals working in the delicate area of Venice, comparing traditional techniques, new materials and market needs. Technicians from the Colorifi cio San Marco work alongside university researchers and
technicians from the Offi ce for the Protec-tion of Venetian Cultural Heritage for trai-ning. With regard to the learning of traditional application techniques. This highly practical course will be taught by Master Venetian arti-san Franco Fogliata, and be assisted by stucco decorator Giorgio Berto. A big portion of the course is also dedicated to the knowledge of applications using current methods and pro-
ducts, from a synergic and enrichment point of view: this section will be conducted by tech-nicians from the Colorifi cio San Marco. There will also be other modules related to art history (Dr. Zucchetta), worksite safety (Arch. Girello), and restoration chemistry (Dr. Morabito) in or-der to help fully prepare these new professio-nals.
