    Introduction

The game plays the same regardless of thedifficulty level at which you play. The differ-ences are in how much damage you and yourteam members can take. For example, on theeasy level, you can take several hits beforeyou are in trouble. At more difficult levels, oneor two hits and you are history.

    Note●✓

Freedom Fighters is a game of tactical combat, or what some like torefer as a thinking shooter. Unlike most shooter games, which send aplayer through an essentially linear course, killing everything insight, or others that require the player to find special keys or cards toget through a locked door, Freedom Fighters lets the player concen-trate on tactics as well as strategy. For nearly every mission, there ismore than one way of completing the objectives.

The player can give orders to recruited team members with asimple button press. Commanding team members is very important; itallows the player to create diversions, set ambushes, and evenmaneuver the team to catch the enemy in a crossfire. Furthermore, the structure of the missions, with the division of missions into

subzones, allows players to choose the order in which they completethe objectives.

The premise of Freedom Fighters is an alternate history where theSoviet Union developed the atomic bomb first and won World War II.With a weaker America, the Soviets expanded into Western Europeand then the Western Hemisphere. Their next step is the UnitedStates, and they are beginning with an invasion of New York City. AsChris Stone, a plumber caught up in the attack, the player must helpbuild up a resistance organization and drive the Soviets from the city.To accomplish this, the player must use guerilla warfare tactics andhit the antagonists where they least expect it.

How to Use This BookThis strategy guide comprises three sections. The first section coversthe game basics, which includes information on all the characters inthe game, the weapons and equipment you can use to defeat theReds (as well as what they will use against you), and finally tacticsand strategies to help you succeed. The second section consists ofstep-by-step walkthroughs of each mission, including the mosteffective order in which to complete the objectives and ways toavoid the enemy strong points. The final section covers the multi-player game, with tips on how to beat other Freedom Fighters.

During the course of your guerilla campaign in Soviet-controlledNew York City, you control a single character—Chris Stone. Youalso interact with, fight against, and even command a host of othercharacters. It is important to know who your friends are and whom

to shoot at. Be careful—a one-time friend may turn against you,and enemies may become allies. Anything can happen in thestreets and sewers of the occupied Big Apple.

Freedom FightersThe Freedom Fighters are anyone who resists Soviet domination. Some actively fight the Soviet troops, while others take a morepassive role. However, each person is important in helping you tocomplete your missions and take back the city for Americans.

Born and raised in Brooklyn, Chris is just a normal New Yorkworking man with a shelf full of football trophies and a rent billthat arrives every month.

At 32, Chris's biggest influence in life is still his family. His dadis an Irishman, a retired rescue worker who calmly saved livesfor years but who just as calmly put a handbag thief into thehospital. His mother is a Native American schoolteacher. Herfather taught the old Indian ways to Chris and his brother, Troy.

After the Soviets invade New York, Chris becomes a FreedomFighter and leads a determined and growing group known as theManhattan Resistance. During the game, you control Chris as heseeks to liberate his home from the enemy.

    Chris Stone

    Troy Stone

The younger of the Stone brothers, Troy is a real handful. At 30, hestill hasn't decided what he wants to do, but whatever it is, hewants to do it fast. He builds custom cars with the local car club, the Brooklyn Rats, in his ample spare time. He often helps hisbrother with plumbing jobs. Troy's capture by the Soviets leadsChris into the resistance business.

At 60, Mr. Jones is still nimble enough to train newcomers in the artof urban guerilla fighting. Years of military life have given him anexceptional understanding of strategy, along with a cynical edgethat keeps even friendly folks at a distance. He never developed asa great soldier in the field, but his networking and planning skillsmake him a real asset to the resistance.

"Talk is cheap," says Phil Bagzton. "That's why I do it constantly, dude."Phil, to hear him tell it, has been kicking Soviet butt for 10 years,

even though the invasion has just begun. He's a man of many, manywords whose fighting efforts, despite their ineptitude, are appreciatedby the resistance.

Phil began boxing at 13, not as a sport but in self-defense againsthis abusive father. His fists never served him well, and he eventuallylearned to talk his way out of most situations. The rest of Phil's familyfled to California at the start of the invasion.

Phil hangs around the resistance base and offers guidance andeventually assistance during the course of the campaign.

    Phil Bagzton

    Mr. Jones

The streets of New York are not kind to orphans, especially skinny 15year olds in the midst of a full-scale invasion. But The Kid lets it rolloff his back. He's never really had it much easier.

The Kid's real name is Dinh Nguyen. He knows every corner of thecity, and his graffiti can be found on almost every block. He's no gangmember, but he's had issues with the local authorities and he knowshis way around the neighborhood thugs. The Kid lived at a boardingschool until recently, but it was closed down because the school-master refused to teach Soviet principles.

The Kid's street wisdom is a valuable asset to the resistance. Heoften warns Chris of dangers hiding farther up the block, providesadvice as to what you should target first, or where you can find thenecessary supplies to complete your objectives.

    The Kid

Graceful beauty, clear eyes, and a ready smile make Isabella, 29, a realthreat to the men of New York. Strong political views, a cunning intellect, and a knack for public speaking make her a threat to the Soviets.

Born in the U.S., Isabella traveled extensively while studying ethnog-raphy and completing her thesis on Inuit people. Her studies took herthrough Canada and Greenland, all the way to the arctic Soviet Union. Her experiences there turned her into a political activist protestingSoviet aggression worldwide.

Isabella is a fast learner and a survivor quick to adapt to new condi-tions. Together with Chris, she leads the Manhattan Resistance.

Isabella is the first, and last, person you must rescue during thecampaign. She helps by providing guidance and information regardingyour missions before you leave the resistance base.

The SovietsDuring the campaign, you and the Freedom Fighters take on the Red Army. The Soviet leaders andsoldiers are veterans of numerous interventions and aggressive actions; do not expect yourenemies to line up for you to shoot. When you take out one soldier, the others quickly respond byseeking cover and then coming after you—usually using flanking moves. Since it is important toknow one's enemies, let's look at what you are up against.

    Tatiana Kempinski

How do you win over millions of people in just minutes? A prettyface and an innocent smile broadcast over television. Tatiana hasthe looks and the voice, but her innocent smile is a fake. The"news" she delivers is imported directly from the Kremlin.

Tatiana was born in Krakow, where she studied journalismbefore transferring to the U.S. to finish her degree. She developedfluency in English during her time in the U.S., but in her heart sheremains a loyal member of the Communist Party.

Between missions, Tatiana makes appearances giving NewYorkers the official news, featuring biased accounts of yourexploits as she brands you a criminal.

    Soviet Soldiers

The basic Soviet soldier is armed with either a pistol or an assaultrifle. You rarely find these enemies alone. They stick together insmall squads centered around defensive positions, often withmounted machine guns, or patrol the streets and alleys. After takingout these soldiers, or any enemies for that matter, you can pick uptheir weapons or add any remaining ammo to your own cache.

    Soviet Officers

Soviet officers are found in the company of a squad of soldiers.Officers can be armed with submachine guns or shotguns and weara beret or other soft headwear rather than the standard-issuehelmet. These enemies are a bit tougher to kill and not afraid to getin close to engage you and your troops at short range.

Tatarin does not believe in sending soldiers into battle to kill andmaim. He leads the soldiers in himself so that he can kill and maimalong with them.

Born in 1958 in the Asian Soviet republic of Uzbekistan, GeneralTatarin is a field warrior of the highest echelon. He was brought upin the Soviet army by a family of soldiers, and still lives by thesword today. His father and grandfather both died war heroes inbattle, and he carried on the family tradition by graduating at thetop of his class from military school.

Tatarin was stationed in Guatemala in 1976 as a military advisor. In 1995, he became the youngest Soviet general ever appointed, after establishing military bases in Mexico during his "recoveryefforts" following a massive earthquake. Tatarin is extremelypopular among the soldiers in his command.

Tatarin mainly appears in the newscasts between missions. However, he makes the campaign very personal for Chris andends up as an objective for one of the missions.

    The Soviets

    Soviet Snipers

Snipers, often found on rooftops or looking out from upper-storywindows, are armed with sniper rifles. In most cases, it is best toeliminate them by storming their perch and engaging them at closerange. However, if you have a sniper rifle, shoot them from longrange and save yourself from having to climb several flights of stairs.

    Soviet Vehicles

    Soviet Machine Gunners

The largest soldiers, machine gunners are assigned to carry lightmachine guns. You won't run into these guys until the later missions;however, when you do, watch out. Their heavy body armor makesthem tough to kill. You must either unload lots of bullets or try to takethem out with grenades or Molotov cocktails while hiding behindcover. Avoid going toe-to-toe with the machine gunners since theywill almost always come out on top. Their machine guns put out a lotof lead and have large magazines, allowing them to fire for a longtime before reloading. Once you drop one of these enemies, pick upthe light machine gun for your own personal use.

The Soviet forces employ helicopter gunships throughout the city toprovide air support to their ground troops. While these gunships canbe shot down with a rocket-propelled grenade (RPG), it is better toblow up the helipads from which they operate. Eliminating thehelipad in one subzone will prevent gunships from operating in othersubzones during the course of a mission. Target helipads early onsince a gunship can just mow down your troops with little warningor defense.

    Gunships

Luckily, tanks only show up in a few places during the campaign. The only way to take them out is with an RPG. Therefore, if you seean RPG sitting somewhere, pick it up or at least remember where itis. You may need it later—especially if you run into a tank.

    Tanks

Artillery, also referred to as mortars, only appears in the finalmission. However, its long-range fire allows it to wreak destructionand damage in different subzones within the mission. As withhelipads, artillery should be taken out with explosives early in amission to avoid unnecessary casualties later.

ArtilleryArmored cars appear in most missions. While they are not armed, they can still cause a lot of problems for you and your troops. Thesevehicles drive down the streets and drop off squads of enemysoldiers in various locations. If one runs over you, it can causeserious injury or even kill you outright. Armored cars transporttroops from one subzone to another. The best way to stop them is totake out bridges so they cannot get to you in the first place.

    Armored Cars

  • Taking on the Soviet invaders istough work. To do the job right, you need the correct tools. Yourcharacter, Chris Stone, begins thegame with only a pipe wrench; asyou progress, you acquire moreweapons and equipment.

    8

To use close-combat weapons, youmust be right next to your target. Sincemost of your enemies are carryingfirearms that can hurt you from adistance, close-combat weapons arebest for sneaking up behind enemiesand taking them out quietly.

    Close Combat

Most often you want weapons that canattack the enemy at range. FreedomFighters offers a variety of firearms fordefeating the Soviet invaders. You beginwith pistols and slowly add additionalfirearms as you progress. Wheneverenemies die, they drop their weapons. You can trade your current weapon fora new one or, if the weapon dropped isthe same as the one you are carrying, you can pick up additional ammo.

    Firearms

    Pipe Wrench

This wrench is your only weapon at thegame's beginning; you must use it toget rid of the first Soviet you encounter. It usually takes two or three hits tofinish off an enemy, so stay close andkeep swinging. The pipe wrench alsocomes in handy for opening manholecovers so you can access the sewers.

Firearms for Close CombatAt close range, it can be difficult tobring a large weapon to bear on yourtarget and then fire. Instead, use yourfirearm to strike an enemy and scorethe kill without firing a shot. Just pressthe Close Combat Attack button. Itusually takes a couple of hits to bringdown an enemy.

Soviet soldiers carry standardautomatic pistols. As you move on tomore powerful weapons, the automaticpistol is great as a backup weapon incase you run out of ammo for your rifleor other primary weapon. Train yourselfto fire bursts of three shots. That'swhat it takes to kill a Soviet soldier.

    Automatic Pistol

The .44 magnum is the only Americanfirearm you have access to during thecampaign. It becomes available afteryour training mission and can only befound at the resistance base. While itis a superior pistol, causing moredamage than the automatic pistol, youcan't find additional ammo during themissions. However, when you run outof ammo, you can always swap for anautomatic pistol, so take the magnumalong for some stopping power.

    .44 Magnum

The shotgun is a close-range weaponcarried by Soviet officers. It may bedifficult to find ammo for it, thoughsome missions have stashes ofshotguns where you can load up. Itusually takes two shots to kill anenemy with the shotgun—more atlonger ranges. Automatically shoottwice at all targets to make sure theydon't get up again. The shotgun is anexcellent weapon for indoor combat, such as clearing small rooms orhallways. Just keep an eye on yourammo and be ready to pick up anotherweapon before you run out.

    Shotgun

Whenever you changeweapons, you keep yourammo supply for yourprevious weapon. Forexample, if you have 100rounds for your assaultrifle and then swap to ashotgun, when you pickup another assault rifleyou still have those 100rounds plus whatever is leftin the rifle you acquired. So if you see a stash ofweapons, swap out to anew weapon and pick upall of that type to stock upon its ammo, then switchback to your weapon ofchoice. By doing this, youload up on different typesof ammo, so if you need tochange to a new weaponlater, you already have agood stock of ammo anddon't have to rely on whatis left in the clip.

    Weapons and Equipment

Soviet officers wield submachine guns. This weapon puts out a lot of lead in a short time. However, it is not as accurate at long range as the shotgun, and it is difficult to find enoughammo to keep this weapon ready to fire. Pick up a submachine gun if you need to clear aninterior, especially when moving through narrow halls or stairways. Just be ready to pickup another weapon when your ammo supply gets low.

    Submachine Gun

The assault rifle is your best friend during your campaign. This weapon fires bursts for aslong as you hold down the Fire button, and most of the Soviet soldiers carry it. This meansyou have a constant source of ammo! The assault rifle is also great for firing at close, medium, and long range. You pick one of these up on your first mission after training andwill use it from that point on.

    Assault Rifle

The sniper rifle is a special type of weapon. It is not something you want to be carryingwhile running down the street engaging the enemy. It works well for attacking targets atlong range from a concealed or partially covered position. You eventually acquire a sniperrifle from the resistance base. However, earlier in the campaign, you can snag one fromSoviet snipers. The main disadvantage is the limited amount of ammunition. Each rifle youpick up has about five rounds. At times you can find a second sniper rifle nearby anddouble the number of shots you can take. However, even 10 shots is not a lot if you plan totake on squads of enemies.

As with most weapons, it takes at least two rounds to kill an enemy. However, with theaccuracy of the sniper rifle and its scope, try for head shots, which pick off a foe with asingle round. The key to using the sniper rifle is target selection. With limited rounds, youshould take out the biggest threat: soldiers manning mounted machine guns (since theguns' armored shields make them more difficult to hit) or those soldiers positioned in theguard towers. Once you have other Freedom Fighters on your team, send them off toassault a position while you hang back with a sniper rifle and pick off Soviets who try toman the machine guns and cause trouble for your people.

    Sniper Rifle

Light machine guns are another rare weapon to find during the campaign. They pack a lotof firepower. Pick one up when possible. They have a large magazine, allowing you to firenonstop without having to reload often. However, just because you can lay down sheets oflead doesn't mean that is the best tactic. Instead, fire this weapon in short bursts. Whileyou do have a large magazine, ammunition is just as hard to find as the weapon itself.

When using Molotovsand frag grenades, beready to throw a secondone if necessary. Untilyou become an expert, often your first throw willmiss, but with a littlecorrection you can hit onyour second throw.

    Tip●F TTTTTTTTTTTT

In addition to firearms, incendiary andexplosive devices aid your campaignto rid the city of the enemy. Using theseweapons requires a bit more thoughtthan just running out and blasting awaywith an assault rifle. The effects arewell worth the extra second or two ittakes to use these devices.

Incendiariesand Explosives You get a supply of Molotov cocktails for each of your missions. Infact, you learn how to use them during the training mission. Molotovs

can be tricky and even dangerous indoors or while behind cover. Onceyou select a Molotov, you use the Fire button to throw it. The longeryou hold down the button, the farther it goes. Once the power barreaches maximum, you throw the Molotov automatically. It is key toaim and be ready to throw before you press the Fire button.

Molotovs explode on impact, spreading flaming liquid around thearea and injuring or killing anyone who comes in contact with theflame. If you throw a Molotov and it hits a dumpster or wall that youare hiding behind, it covers you in fire. So be careful.

Molotovs are best used for assaulting an enemy position or fortaking out groups of enemies without exposing yourself to fire. Theycan be found in rooms and alleys in the subzones, usually along withpotential recruits. Since this is a resistance weapon, you will not findthese on Soviets or in their bases.

    Molotov Cocktail

Frag grenades are Soviet weapons, initially found on Soviets andeventually added to your selection of weapons every time you leavethe resistance base. You throw frag grenades just like Molotovcocktails. Unlike the Molotovs, frag grenades detonate with a fuse, which means they can bounce. It takes some practice to effectivelyuse frag grenades. When you find some in the earlier missions, practice with them so that by the time you hit the more difficultmissions you can throw a frag accurately. Because they don'tdetonate on impact, you can throw them so they bounce around acorner. Also, they have a larger destructive radius, making them moredangerous and deadly than Molotovs.

The best time for frag grenades is when attacking groups ofenemies—especially those behind barricades or other defenses. Agood tactic if your foes have their backs to a wall is to throw past themat the wall so the grenade bounces right into their position.

    Fragmentation Grenades

This explosive can only be used to destroy objectives: bridges, helipads, artillery, and other targets. Until the resistance base has itsown stock of C4, you must find it during a mission. In fact, you will notfind it in subzones where it is needed. Plan ahead and make picking upsome C4 your first priority in missions where you need it.

    C4 Plastic Explosive

    Weapons and Equipment

At times you need heavy firepower. Here iswhat you can find left behind by Soviet forces.

    Heavy Weapons

Not everything you carry is a weapon. A coupleof other items come in handy during missions.

    Other Items

After you take control of a Soviet defensive position, you can use any available mountedmachine guns. To man one of these babies, walk up to it and press the Action button. Thescreen automatically changes to an Aim view; mow down any enemies in your sights. Thisweapon, with its rapid automatic fire, never runs out of ammo. Keep firing as long astargets are available.

You can also order members of your team to man a mounted machine gun. Switch to Aimmode and center on the ground at the machine gun's base. Then give a single fighter anorder to Defend. That character will take up position behind the machine gun and use it toattack Soviet troops. This is a good tactic if you want some cover fire while you personallylead an assault. On the other hand, you may want to provide the cover fire while orderingyour team to move out and advance on the enemy. When you are through firing, back awayfrom the gun to regain control of your personal weapons and equipment.

    Mounted Machine Gun

This weapon, also known as an RPG, is your only antitank weapon. You need it to blow upany tanks you come across. However, RPGs can also be used against gunships or even troopconcentrations. Nothing stops a Soviet mounted machine gun position like an RPG round. While you come across a few Soviet soldiers carrying RPGs, you more often find them incorners or alleys near or in Soviet bases. The downside to RPGs is that they have a limitedamount of ammunition. Also, you must drop your primary weapon to pick up an RPG. Whenyou see an RPG, advance to a place where you can use it, then go back and pick it up.

    Rocket-Propelled Grenade Launcher

Med kits can be a lifesaver—literally. You start out with some at the resistance base andcan find more during the missions. Keep track of how many you are carrying. Use them toheal any wounds and damage you take and also to heal others. When your fighters arewounded, they lie on the ground with red crosses over them. Head over and press theAction button to heal them and put them back into action. Also, during the course of amission, you come across wounded people—civilians, fighters, and even Soviets. Heal themto gain charisma or to find new recruits to join your team.

    Med Kit

You eventually gain access to binoculars. With this item selected, press the Aim button tozoom in on distant objects and enemies. Binoculars are particularly effective from anelevated position such as a rooftop. In addition to seeing what lies ahead, use the binocularview to give orders to your team. Identify Soviet soldiers and then order your team toadvance and attack. You are safe at a distance and have a good view of the battle, allowingyou to change targets for your team as necessary.

    Binoculars

  • This chapter provides tips forthose new to the resistancemovement. Since the Sovietinvasion and occupation of NewYork City, people from all walks oflife have traded in their pastoccupations for a new one—Freedom Fighter. To help increasethe success of resistance groupsthroughout the area, strategiesand tactics for guerilla warfarehave been compiled.

While the common Freedom Fighterrarely considers the broader scope ofhis or her actions, leaders must takeinto account the strategic nature oftheir operations. Since guerillas do nothave the manpower or firepower toengage in direct combat with profes-sional military forces, it is of vitalimportance to know how best to useyour resources and provide your teamwith an advantage over the enemy.

Strategy Freedom Fighters are equippedprimarily with weapons found orcreated, so missions calling formilitary-grade supplies, namely C4plastic explosives, require a leader andteam to steal the explosives from theSoviets. Therefore, if your objectivesrequire you to blow up something, locate a source of C4 and make thatyour first objective.

    Acquisition of Material

Since the original invasion, the Sovietshave utilized airpower in the form ofhelicopter gunships. These aircraft arearmored and impervious to small-armsfire. They can operate in any urbanenvironment and bring a tremendousamount of firepower to bear on targetsnot only in the open but also behindcover. Do not try to operate in areaswhere gunships are flying. There is amuch easier way to put these choppersout of business. Gunships require ahelipad from which to operate. Asingle C4 charge destroys a helipad, preventing any further use of gunshipsin the area for the mission's duration.Helipads are always listed as secondaryobjectives; their destruction is vital tomission success.

    Helipads

    12

The first thing a leader should do foreach mission is plan the action. Mostmissions take place over a several-block area known as a zone. Thesezones might be divided into subzonesthat focus on areas where operationswill take place. Each subzone involvesa primary objective and often at leastone secondary objective. To completethe subzone, only the primary objectiveneed be accomplished. However, achieving secondary objectives resultsin an increase in charisma, allowingleaders to recruit more fighters to theirteam. Often these secondary objectivesaffect operations in other subzonesduring the mission's course. A leadermust become familiar with all themission's objectives. He or she mustthen prioritize the objectives andestablish the order in which they willbe completed. Following is a listing ofpriorities for most missions. They arepresented from highest priority to lowest.

    Planning Out the Mission

Study the maps and objectives to ploteach mission before you start.

Take some C4 before blowing up objectives.

Taking out a helipad stops all gunshipoperations during a mission.

Guerilla Warfare in an Urban EnvironmentGuerilla Warfare in an Urban EnvironmentGuerilla Warfare in an Urban Environment

While strategy concerns where andwhen you fight, tactics focus on howyou fight. You are almost always at adisadvantage during combat, soeffective tactics enable you to defeatthe Soviets and exhibit the inherentabilities of the American fighting manand woman.

    Tactics

One of the advantages of guerillawarfare is the ability to hit youropponents where they are weak; theycannot be strong everywhere. Tocounter this, the Soviets employ armoredcars, which can transport a squad ofsoldiers to the location of an attackand quickly reinforce the troops alreadythere. Since these armored cars areimpervious to small arms fire, the bestway to prevent them from deliveringtheir cargo is to blow up bridges andcut off their access to neighboringsubzones for the mission's duration.Always make bridges a priority or youmay end up fighting off a never-endingsupply of reinforcements.

    Bridges

    Knock out those bridges.

Primary objectives always involvereplacing a Soviet flag on a buildingwith an American flag. Since you mustusually secure a building to get to theflag, the flag-raising represents a Sovietdefeat and serves as an inspiration tothe civilian masses. Some subzonesare more difficult to secure than others.Within a mission, select the easiestflags to raise first. Often you receivecharisma points within a subzone. These allow you to recruit more fightersto your team. Try to get a little extrahelp for those tougher subzones.

    Flag-Raising

Raising the flag completes a subzone.

The sewers provide an excellentmeans for the resistance to appearanywhere with the element of surpriseand offer a means of escape if thingsget too hot. They also allow you to skiparound between subzones easily. Thismeans that you do not have to completean entire subzone before continuing onto the next. In fact, you should usuallycomplete all the secondary objectivesfor a mission, then begin raising flags.

Manholes can also be used toquicksave a mission. If you die duringa mission, you can restart within asubzone rather than at the beginningof the subzone. Manholes allow you toreturn to the resistance base if you needmore weapons or supplies. However, whenever you leave a subzone (eitherto return to base or go to anothersubzone), when you come back, theSoviets will have had a chance toreplace the soldiers you neutralized.Luckily, they do not have time to repairhelipads or bridges. These remaindestroyed for the course of the mission.

    Manholes and the Sewers

Manholes have a variety of uses.

Almost all primary objectives aredefended. As the campaign progresses,so does the amount of defense providedfor these buildings. The Soviets expectyou to make a direct, frontal assault ontheir positions and be killed before youcan even reach the concrete barricades.Guerilla tactics call for the avoidanceof such attacks. In most cases, youcan find an alternate way to reach anobjective that either bypasses theSoviet defensive positions or allowsyou to attack it in the flanks—an attackfor which they have little protection, from a direction not covered by theirmounted machine guns. Whenever yousee a Soviet defensive position, lookaround for an open window or door, ahole in a wall, or even crates or avehicle that will boost you over a wallor into an upper level. You can evenuse ductwork to climb up the side of abuilding. For almost every majordefensive position, there is an easierway around it. Just look for it.

    Avoid DefensivePositions

A strategically placed truck may offera way around a Soviet kill zone.

  • 14

As a general rule, keep atleast one fighter with youfor protection, especiallyif you are concentrating onordering your team around. To do this, after givingyour entire team an order, just tap the Follow buttonand one fighter will returnto stay with you.

    Tip●F TTTTTTTTTTTT

Occasionally there is no way around adefensive position, or you may have toattack it from the flanks, which providesyou with some advantage. In thosecases, engage at long range if possible.Molotov cocktails and frag grenadeswork well for hitting enemies behindbarricades or other forms of cover. Ifthe enemy uses snipers to cover anarea, sneak up behind them, then usetheir sniper rifles against their comrades. Also use aimed fire with assault rifles, pistols, or other weapons and targetindividuals as they peek out from coverto shoot at you. By picking off oneenemy at a time, you can clear out aposition before you even get near it.

    Attack at a Distance

Sniper rifles are great for clearing anarea before assaulting it.

Cover is vital. Running down themiddle of the street is the quickest wayto get yourself killed. Instead, crouchdown and hide behind crates, dumpsters, low walls, and so on. Avoidusing cars and trucks as cover. If theytake enough damage they explode, killing or wounding anyone nearby. Ifyou must move across an open area, run—you are harder to hit when inmotion. Don't stop to shoot back untilyou have some cover.

    Use of Cover

The shield on a mounted machine gunprovides some cover against attackscoming from your front.

Leadership plays an important role intactics. While you begin your owncampaign, you eventually command upto 12 Freedom Fighters. With a littlepractice, you can almost completemissions without firing a shot, thoughyou have to plant explosives and raiseflags. You can only give threecommands, but they accomplish anumber of tasks. The Follow orderinstructs your teammates to return toyour side and stay with you as youmove around. Think of them asbodyguards. However, they will moveforward to engage the enemy. If youwant them to stay put, especiallybehind cover or in a crater, issue theDefend order. You can also use this toorder a fighter to man a machine gun.

Just aim at the gun and give theDefend order. The Attack/Scout orderis extremely useful. While aiming, order your team to move to a pointunder your reticule. This is calledscouting. Issuing this command whileaiming at an enemy orders the team toattack that enemy.

For all orders, tapping the buttonorders a single fighter, while holdingdown the button orders all of yourteam. Scouting can help prevent youand your team from being ambushed.Send a single fighter ahead, around acorner, or into a building or adjacentroom to see where the enemy is. Youcan then recall the fighter with theFollow command or order the rest ofyour team in to fight.

    Leadership

Icons appear over the heads of yourteam members when they are given anorder. This confirms which fighterreceives the orders and is usefulwhen giving an order to an individualrather than the entire team.
