The Rector’s Message

The Rector’s November “Musings”

The New York Times in its internet article “The 2012 Money Race” reports the Presidential

candidates comparative Money Raised/Money Spent totals as follows:

Obama $934 million raised $881.8 million spent

Romney $852.9 million raised $752.3 million spent

Totals $1.786 billion raised $1.634 billion spent

What if we could have used these monies for other things? How could we have helped the people of

the U.S. and others around the world?

The 2012 Storm has passed . . . as storms always do. The East Coast, particularly the Northeast,

is faced with the aftermath. We will remember this storm as devastating in other parts of the country.

Some around here say, “We were blessed.” Which, of course, implies that God had something to do with

our escaping devastation. Which, of course, implies that God has something to do with others

experiencing devastation. I don’t think God works that way. The potential for what we call disaster is

part of life; destruction appears to be part of the cycle of creation. It makes way for something new. The

tragedy is when we find ourselves, or those we love, or things we love in the path of destructive

elements. So, the choice becomes stay and try to withstand the storm or evacuate to a place of safety.

Often, for a variety of very human reasons, it is a tough choice. Sometimes we don’t have a choice.

What I do know is that God is in the midst of the mess that storms, whatever their origin, bring about in

our lives, ready to help us rebuild.

Thanksgiving. The national holiday happens this month. A holiday from work and a time of

feasting. Families get together. Sometimes this is good and joyful; sometimes it is difficult – either

getting together or not being able to be together. Perhaps this holiday has really lost its meaning. Didn’t

it start out almost four hundred years ago with the idea of celebrating simply because: 1) we really have

something to eat after all; 2) we are still alive after all we’ve been through; 3) we are thankful that we

have the basic necessities of life: food, shelter, each other? What are you and I thankful for this

Thanksgiving? Let’s start with the basics! Then let’s consider how we can help others share in the

blessing of having the basics of life, too.

Stewardship. A piece of trivia: In the gospels “ship” is often a metaphor for the church. So

Stewardship offers us an opportunity to consider how we are called to be stewards of God’s church.

This leads to the interesting question to be asked by any steward of its master: “What do you want

us/me to do, Master?’ It’s also interesting that stewardship is a special topic in the life of both Trinity

and SMWC around Thanksgiving each year. We are all stewards of these small but vibrant churches.

What is God’s will for each of these churches? How can we be good stewards of the potential of each

church? What is each of us called to do, remembering that what we have has been given to us, not to

store away or keep to ourselves, but to pass forward to accomplish the Master’s goals? What we give are

the seeds that make the harvest. May we be joyful in our thanks giving that the yield at harvest time

may be bountiful!

Blessings abound, let’s pass them forward…

Torrence

Trinity and SMWC annually celebrate St. Francis Day on the weekend nearest his Saint’s day by encouraging parishioners to bring their four footed, furred, finned and feathered friends to the special service. St. Francis is known as the patron saint of animals. This is a special time of blessings at both churches each year.

It was raining cats and dogs on our scheduled Blessing of the Animals Sunday this year; however, at Trinity the animals and the people took shelter in the Pavilion. Dogs, guinea pigs, fish and a horse made for an exciting and blessed morning.

SMWC had to reschedule to the next Sunday, but what a glorious day it turned out to be at the Labyrinth. All was calm as the cats and dogs took their turns at receiving a blessing and a snack or two. During the service three eagles circled overhead, drawn to the blessing time. Or perhaps they were sent to spread blessings on all of us from on high. [Below Torrence Harman blesses Jane & Roger Fortin’s cat, ‘Neema‘ and Wiley & Bo’s dog, ‘Happy’]

In November you will receive a letter from your Vestry asking you to make a pledge for the coming year. The Vestry asks that you prayerfully consider your pledge, and that before deciding how much to pledge you ask yourself the following question: Does my pledge truly reflect the depth of my gratitude for the many blessings God has bestowed on me and the members of St. Mary's Whitechapel ? Remember, our annual pledges provide not only a means to pay our ongoing expenses, but also to reach out and help those around us who are less fortunate than we are. Stewardship Sunday will be Nov. 18th. Thank you, Wiley Wright

Stan James, Jr., Jane Dunaway, Stuart Dunaway, Craig Giese

Stuart Dunaway

Trinity’s 2012 Unsung Hero

On Sunday, October 21 Trinity Episcopal Church honored Stuart Dunaway with its annual Unsung Hero award. Stan James, Senior Warden, and Craig Giese, former Senior Warden, presented the award to Mr. Dunaway. Words spoken by Stan James described Dunaway as a “reluctant” hero, who like all previous recipients had said when approached, “It should go to someone else.” James explained the selection: “Stuart, along with Lee Davis and the late Mitchell Carlson, Jr., has been a tremendous asset to this community as a sponsor of many local charities and events. They have contributed in some way to most organizations, clubs and churches, either through donations, discounts or space available on their sidewalk to make money for their charity.” James continued, “Stuart and Tri-Star have also created a culture within the business that allows and encourages their employees and associates to be involved in the community with such efforts as the volunteer fire department and rescue squad. Stuart allows them the flexibility to respond to emergency calls when they need to. This, I’m certain has caused inconveniences to the business, but one that they thought necessary in order to serve others.” Craig Giese recognized the former recipients of Trinity’s Unsung Hero Award which has been given annually since 2006. They include: Thomas Earl Tomlin, Sr.; Dr. Norman (Rocky) Tingle, Jr.; The Rev. Nancy Pinn; Norwood McCarty; and Rex E. Leftridge. A reception followed the service in the Trinity Pavilion where Trinity parishioners, Dunaway family members and friends from all over the community had the opportunity to informally greet and thank the reluctant hero.

Congratulations, Stuart!!

Guest Preacher at Trinity

On November 11th, Carey Chirico who has been active in the Haiti Mission work at St. George’s Fredericksburg will be with us at Trinity and will deliver the sermon. Carey has been an important link for Trinity and our young people as they have learned about and raised money for the school at Port au Prince in Haiti, a mission outreach of St. George’s. Carey is a full time staff member at St. George’s as the Director of both Children’s Ministries and Outreach Ministries. She received a B.A. in Psychology from the University of Richmond and a Masters in Educational Administration and Special Education. She has just completed the Diocese of Virginia’s process to become a vocational deacon and will be ordained in February, 2013. We welcome Carey and look forward to her message.

News of Young People at Trinity Directed by: The Rev. Karen Woodruff

Assistants: Biz Flynn & Carli Hanback Email: [email protected] Phone: 462-7457

Congratulations to the young people of Trinity! They have raised a total of $2,928.18 through October for the school at Port-au-Prince Haiti. Thanks to all the parishioners who helped with donations!

As we celebrate, All Saints’ Day, Nov. 4th bring names of those you want to remember and name in the prayers. or add their names to a gold prayer chain which will be brought forward at the offering time. Our friends in Christ in Haiti will be doing the same as we remember those who have died during storms. Here is what our Catechism in the Book of Common has to say that is relevant to All Saint’s Day:

What do we mean by the resurrection of the body? God will raise us from death in the fullness of our being, that we may live with Christ in the communion of the saints.

What is the communion of saints? The whole family of God, the living and the dead, those who we love and those whom we hurt, bound together in Christ by sacrament, prayer, and praise. Why do we pray for the dead? We still hold them in our love and because we trust that in God’s presence those who have chosen to serve him will grow in his love until they see him as he is.

During November our Godly Play stories until Advent will be about the matriarchs and patriarchs of our faith.
