NatioNaal JeNevermuseum schiedamWhen you think Schiedam, you think jenever. The drink, the Dutch dram, has brought Schiedam world-wide renown as the jenever city. Where once stood 400 distilleries that determined the face of the city and gave the city the nickname ‘Black Nazareth’, now stands the Nationaal Jenevermuseum Schiedam. In the museum, the former distillery owned by P. Melchers, also known as the ‘Locomotive’, you get acquainted with all aspects of the gin production. Copper, vats and a large collection of other ‘jeneveralia’, like promotional mate-rial, packaging and glasswork still gives you an insight into what used to go on in the distillery, back in the

grounding chambers. From the balustrade, the wooden orbit around the mill, you have a wonderful view of the inner city.

The original mill was almost completely destroyed, with the exception of the base, in a fire in 1901. 90 years after the fire, the reconstruction was started. This unique project got support from many of Schiedam’s inhabitants. In 1993 Museum Mill De Nieuwe Palmboom opened her doors. activitiesSeveral activities take place inside the mill: guided tours, children’s parties and it’s even possible to get married in the mill!

boat tours schiedamDirectly adjacent to Museum Mill De Nieuwe Palm-boom is the boarding point for the environmentally friendly and completely silent Whisper Boat. Get on board and take a beautiful, interesting boat tour through the canals and harbors of Schiedam. Admire the monumental warehouses on the water and listen to the stories behind the many properties and the (gin) history of the city. A trip on the whisper boat allows you to enjoy the harbors, warehouses, distilleries, malt houses and mills for over an hour.

history. Or what still goes on, because the distillery in the Nationaal Jenevermuseum is still used to distill malt wine, according to the Old-Dutch Method, a recipe from 1700. There is an authentic historical setup with enormous copper boilers, in which a fermented mash of barley malt and rye is triple distilled to create malt wine.

tastingDid you become thirsty or enthralled by the lovely gin odors? In the tasting room of the museum, you can get acquainted with delicious gins and other drinks. Naturally, our ‘own’ Old Schiedam, but also those of other small and big distilleries.

These mills – the highest in the world – gave the city an impressive skyline. At Museum Mill De Nieuwe Palmboom, you’ll learn everything there is to know about Schiedam’s mill history. The production process is on display in the exposition ‘From grain to gin’. The enormous model of the city shows how many mills Schiedam had during the golden age of the gin industry in the 19th century.
