2017 GRAVITY ENDURO NATIONAL SERIES

2 Falls Creek & Mount Beauty THIS WEEK ~ Summer 2017 Edition THIRTEEN

Round One - Falls Creek

The National Gravity Enduro Series acts as the qualifying series for the Enduro World Series. See mention

in the article with Ben McIlroy.Mountain Bike Australia in conjunction with Falls Creek Resort Management are pleased to present Round One of the 2017 Gravity Enduro National Series. The series is Australia wide with Round Two being held at Stromlo Forest ACT in May. Round Three will be at Balingup WA in June; Round Four will go to Rockhampton in July and the final round will be held on Woodford Island, on the Clarence River in northern NSW in August. The popularity of mountain biking continues to grow. From the great efforts of some Mount Beauty locals in the 90’s - to hosting the Nationals in Feb 2000 - to the point where we have some of the best tracks in the country - both in Mount Beauty and in Falls Creek. The growth and the success means we can continue to host fabulous events.

Round One of the GE National Series will be staged this weekend, beginning with practice sessions from 11am Friday.During the course of the weekend, several of the trails will be closed to general riders although Blue Dirt will have shuttles running on Friday from 11am to 6pm and again on Saturday from 9am to 5pm. Cost is $50 per day or $90 for 2 days. Go to www.bluedirt.com.au to book. On Sunday the trails will be closed to the general public, but will progressively open as the different sections of the event are completed. Pretty Valley Road will also have closures and be subject to delays should anyone be travelling back from the horse yards or Pretty Valley Pondage. Now this Gravity Enduro is a different sort of mountain bike racing to what we know as Downhill or Cross Country. The Gravity Enduro is both. The athletes will start with a warm up ride from Slalom Plaza, out the Bogong High Plains Road, up the Pretty Valley Road and then across to the Trig

Point on the Frying Pan Spur. The aim of the game is to ride each section no faster than the fastest time allowed, and no slower than the set slowest time. Then they do the competitive bit, before riding to the start of the next competitive bit without beating or exceeding the times permitted. At the time of going to print, the final course had not been set, but they look like taking in High Voltage and Wishing Well, then heading to Flowtown, completing that before heading to Thunderbolt and then to Generator and Vortex before finishing in Slalom Plaza. Sound like a pretty easy day!!The weekend’s program sort of goes like this. Saturday: 9am to 16:00 is compulsory practice. 10am to 18:30 is rider registration and Info Tent open. 17:00 to 17:30 is rider briefing. From 18:00 on there is a social evening at Last Hoot Restaurant and Bar in Slalom Plaza.Sunday: 8am to 9am Rider Briefing and Timing activation. 8:30am to 1430pm Trails Open for GE competition.1500 to 1630 Presentations. If you’re into biking and would like to enjoy some good action, be at Falls Creek this weekend. With Significant History

The beginnings and the history of this Australian tradition are really quite interesting. The fact that a

community can get together and spend time singing and celebrating with family and friends is extraordinary.

Norman Banks, a 3KZ radio announcer was walking home from his night-time radio shift on Christmas Eve in 1937, when he passed a window and saw an elderly woman inside sitting up in bed, listening to ‘Away in a Manger’ being played on the radio and singing along, with her face being lit by candlelight.

Wondering how many others spent Christmas alone, he had the idea to invite people to a group event and sing Christmas carols together by candlelight.

Carols by Candlelight was held in Alexandra Gardens from 1938 to 1958 and then moved to the newly constructed Sidney Myer Music Bowl in 1959.

It would be a pretty certain bet that not

CAROLS BY CANDLELIGHT one adult out there does not remember fondly the times your parents took you to Carols by Candlelight. Whether it was in the King George Gardens in Wangaratta, in the Sydney Myer Music Bowl in Kings Domain, or outside the Community Centre in Mount Beauty, it doesn’t matter. Carols by Candlelight has special significance. Not only did you get to play with a live, yes a real live burning candle dripping down your shirt; but it meant that Santa was coming and Christmas morning was getting closer and closer.

The very simple act of getting together without too much formality, relaxing as a community of families and singing some traditional Christmas Carols has a lot of merit – and it promotes a family atmosphere so beneficial for the kids – and the oldies. We will learn all too early in life that fairy tales aren’t real – but for a few short years let the kids be kids.

Proudly presented by Upper Kiewa Valley Lions Club, this year’s Carols will be held on Tuesday 12th December. The venue will be the Mount Beauty Secondary College,

outside the Jessie Hollonds Studio Building – with the overflow spreading on to the Les Peart Oval.

The evening will kick off from 6pm with a BBQ and soft drinks, snow cones, popcorn and fairy floss all available.

The Carols will kick off at 8pm with local artists and many of our school kids singing – all supported by our fabulous community band. The carols will be followed by a visit from Santa Claus. Santa will give out bags of lollies for all the children under 12 years of age.

Parents, teachers, mark this in your diary to come along, bring the children and make this a fun night for all. Everyone is encouraged to bring your own blankets, rugs and chairs. After Santa Claus arrives at approximately 9:15, and once lollies have been given to all the children, there will be an extended Carols by Candlelight community singalong.

van der Ploeg (2013 XCE World Champion and also raised in Mount Beauty) who’s been at University for like forever but at the same time he’s been a professional mountain biker. So it’s possible.I like Physics so maybe something to do with engineering. I’d love to get involved with building new parts for bikes, making them faster and better. Developing ideas like Shimano’s new electronic gearing, which I’ve just got on my new bike.MR: It’s pretty obvious you like to keep involved with the mountain bike world. Do you feel any pressure from a biking perspective during your final year at school?Ben: There’s so many people helping me and pushing me into the pro mountain bike scene and it’s so easy to get sucked into it and think it’s going to continue to be easy for the rest of my life. I step back and think that it’ll be hard work, but with the right support I could do it. I think it’s important to still have to the love for mountain biking.MR: Do you think your love for the sport will change if you become a full on racer?Ben: Not really, As much as I enjoy the whole vibe of riding with my mates, hanging out and having a good time. I still really really enjoy the racing aspect of mountain biking, it determines who is the best and everyone wants to be the best at what they do.Racing has brought mountain biking to where it is today, bikes are lighter and faster and better than ever and racing has played a massive role in that.MR: Do you have any expectations racing your first EWS in New Zealand?

Ben: I have no idea. I don’t know if I’m going to come last or first or not finish. I hope there’s lots of riders, because in the Australian races there’s only like 20 athletes, but it’s the other side of the world for all the Europeans, so I don’t know if the junior riders will travel that far, but I’ll just wait and see.MR: Well have an awesome time; I’m sure it’ll be fun no matter what the result. Is there anyone you’d like to thank?Ben: Mum and Dad, Chris, Sam and everyone from Shimano. Results:In the Enduro World Series in Rotorua, Ben achieved a creditable 12th place out of

about 50 entrants in the U21’s after a bit of a rough day. After the trip to New Zealand, Ben then went on to compete at EWS Round Two at Derby, in North Eastern Tasmania. But this time, among the U21 competitors, it all came together for Ben and he finished on top of the podium - and is currently leading the U21 class after the first two rounds. With the next six rounds taking place all round the world, Ben is about to focus on year 12 and the Australian National Enduro Series. • Matt Rousu

CHRISTMAS IS HERE And it Starts at Home

The guys from the Men’s Shed do a great job of getting the Chrissy decorations up. They’re doing them

this Sunday. Well done team and much appreciated. Many other organisations are doing their bit also.

The team at the Mount Beauty Community Bank branch of the Bendigo Bank have their Christmas Gift Tree in place. Working with Anglicare, the folk are gathering donations for local members of the community a little less fortunate than our selves this Christmas.

The UKV Lions Ladies have, at their own cost, put together a fabulous Christmas Hamper, the tickets for which have been sold in the main street for the last few weeks. The draw will take place at Carols on Tuesday evening. As well as the hamper, there are several other great prizes.

The shops have been decorated and lots of new stock is hitting the shelves – really good looking products that would suit even the most discerning friend or relative. Another fun element to the Christmas shopping is the enjoyment of cruising the shops and checking out the great local product – having a chat with other shoppers and the proprietor – generally making your Christmas shopping enjoyable – as opposed to a rush and a grind.

A couple of unique and very special gifts to be considered would be the family photo session by Kylie at Big Bright Photos (www.bigbrightphots.com.au or ph: 0447 434 827) or the fantastic local calendar produced by Roslyn Anne Photography and available in the good shops around town.

There is locally made jewellery by Argent Silversmith (Liz Herman) in Sassy Road and loads of gifts for guys upstairs at Dapper Drive. Tawonga South Store has a range of great products and our Mount Beauty Hardware and Drapery has a range of ‘everything’ for everyone for summer.

Some Christmas Facts

Any regular reader of this publication will be aware of the Editor’s attitude towards Shopping Locally. Recent figures from the RACV show that it costs 55.19cents per kilometre to own and run a Kia Cerato 5D Hatchback. That means that a trip to Albury Wodonga shopping (80km each way and 10km running around) 170m will cost you $93.82. Any person who thinks that a trip to Albury is just $20 in fuel is deluding themselves. A Toyota Kluger GX 4D wagon at 86.50cents/km will cost $147.05 for the same trip shopping in Albury.

Another item that came to light recently was that on-line shopping was now generating a massive increase of ‘product returns.’ If you can’t see it, feel it, touch it before you buy it, there is every chance you’ll be returning it!

This paper lists how much our local Mount Beauty Community Bank has returned to the community in its ten years of operation – in excess of $450,000 to local organisations. Add to this the $200,000 (approx.) returned to the community by the Mount Beauty Foodworks ‘Spirit of the Community’ program and we get a total of around $650,000 – well in excess of half a million dollars.

Christmas is about giving. It is also about considering. Consider what will happen if we continue to patronise the multi-nationals

at the expense of our local community. We are proud of our community. Show your pride by supporting each other. •

A TIME TO REMEMBER

3Falls Creek & Mount Beauty THIS WEEK ~ Summer 2017 Edition THIRTEEN

ANZAC Day

The years flash by; the numbers of actual returned service personnel diminishes - and yet the respect

increases. Fortunately conflicts of the scale of WW1 and WW11 have not re-occurred. New returned service personnel are now coming from the ranks of Vietnam Vets and those who have seen service in the Middle East. Numbers are being maintained by other service personnel and all are supported by the very appreciative public.Over the years, the numbers of spectator supporters that have turned up to show their appreciation has grown dramatically. This, to me, says that there remains a very strong - yet unspoken - feeling of gratitude and respect among the community and in our quiet way, we just turn up and express our acknowledgement of our ‘diggers.’ANZAC Day is the one of the few opportunities in the year where people can come together with a solemn and sincere purpose. It is a day that engenders pride and reinforces the gratefulness carried by the bulk of the nation. It is expected that this year will be no different.Falls Creek ServiceJoin the Falls Creek locals at this unique location, Eagle Rock, for the Dawn Service 2017.Shuttle for ANZAC Dawn Service: 5:15am - 6:30am Meet at Slalom Day Car Park.

Falls Creek Takes Bronze

For over 30 years the Victorian Tourism Awards have showcased and recognised the state’s leaders

in tourism excellence. The Awards encourage businesses to meet and strive to exceed industry standards. The awards play an integral role in rewarding business excellence, innovation, industry professionalism, collaboration and initiative.

In 2016, Falls Creek Resort Management (FCRM) entered for the first time in the major tourism destination category and came away as a Finalist.

In 2017, the enthusiasm and drive to improve was unparalleled and we are pleased to confirm Falls Creek took the

VICTORIAN TOURISM AWARDS Bronze. Congratulations to the Gold winners, Sovereign Hill and Silver winners, Puffing Billy Railway.

FCRM’s CEO, Stuart Smythe says “This is great recognition for all the stakeholders of Falls Creek. To receive this accolade in the same year as the resort having just celebrated entering its 7th decade and 70th birthday, is tremendous.”

I congratulate all who’ve contributed to making Falls Creek the premier all seasons alpine resort and to those early pioneers who set the foundations” Stuart added. “To our visitors and guests, we thank you and will continue to work on exceeding expectations and delivering an unrivalled experience in the Australian Alps.”

Falls Creek is rapidly becoming as well known for skiing in winter as it is mountain biking in summer. In recent research, Falls Creek was voted the ‘most appealing’ element of the current High Country mountain bike offer.

With over 45km of purpose-built single track trails, constructed over the last four years by World Trails, Falls Creek has something for every rider, from beginner, intermediate to advanced.

With ‘ride in / ride out’ trails, you can meet up with your mates for a coffee before heading out on the trails and catch up with them at the end of the day for a beer.

Blue Dirt operates shuttles from Sat, 25th November 2017 every weekend for $60 per person for one day or $110 for 2 days. During the holiday period, 27th December 2017 to 14th January 2018 these shuttles will operate daily. For peace of mind, there is a Bike Patroller (Ski Patroller on a bike) available every shuttle day to ensure rider safety and injury support.

This is only part of what Falls Creek has to offer in the summer months. From hiking, trail running, road cycling, Rocky Valley Dam, altitude training, all in a cooler climate, why not try a new summer holiday destination this year.

The resort also plays host to an exciting calendar of events: Refer to www.fallscreek.com.au for further detail. •

Great Success

Local lad Ben McIlroy is an up and coming Enduro mountain bike racer. Over the last two years he has

progressed to be the fastest junior rider in Australia winning both the National Series and the National Championships in 2016. On March 26 Ben went and raced his first ever EWS (Enduro World Series) event in Rotorua, New Zealand. Prior to the event Matt Rousu caught up with Ben to chat about the race and his potential future in the mountain bike world.MR: Is this your first overseas race?Ben: Yep, first overseas race, first EWS (Enduro World Series), so it’s going to be pretty exciting.MR: Is it excitement or are you nervous?Ben: I’m probably a bit more nervous than excited. Excited to race overseas, but nervous because it’s such a big event.MR: Have you heard anything about the tracks over in Rotorua, NZ?Ben: From what Chris (Panozzo) has said, they’re fast and there aren’t many rocks.MR: How did you get into riding?Ben: Pretty much because of my Dad,

when I was about 12 I started showing more interest in racing. I went to a few of the Victorian Enduro events but after a couple of years that series kind of fell apart. I then stared racing the national series.MR: How many national events have you raced?Ben: My first national year in 2015. I raced three events, Toowoomba, Adelaide, and Canberra and placed 3rd overall for the series. In 2016 I raced the Bright, Perth and Adelaide National series events winning all three and the U19 series overall. I then went on to win U19 National Champs in Adelaide (with a time that would have knocked Troy Brosnan off the elite podium).MR: How did you end up travelling and racing alongside Chris Panozzo (2 time Elite Gravity Enduro Australian champion)?Ben: I first met Chris at a Victorian Enduro state round at Barjarg, I was still like Under 15s or Under 17s and I knew that he was a fast dude. I wanted to hang out with the fast guys so I wanted to hang out with Chris Panozzo.I remember at Barjarg the shuttles were always a bit delayed, we were hanging out down the bottom for so long that we nearly missed our race runs. When we got to the top, everyone was wondering where we’d been. He was just like “Ah we’ve just been chilling at the bottom.” So that felt pretty cool. After that he invited me to travel with him to the next round at Narbethong. During that trip we decided not to race any more of the Vic series. I thought that I wouldn’t really continue racing but then Chris invited me to Toowoomba. That was my first national race and from then on we just became mates and he invited me along to all

of the races he was doing.MR: What are your goals for this year, more EWS or is going to be too hard to juggle school?Ben: I’m racing the EWS in New Zealand and in Tasmania but this year I want to finish Year 12 and get out alive, do as much riding as I can and stay fit. It’s probably not the best year to be going into my first EWS because Year 12 takes up such a massive chunk of my time.MR: Have you got any plans for further studies such as University, or depending on how these two EWS events go, would you like to chance it and try to become a professional racer?Ben: I haven’t really thought too much about it. Becoming a professional mountain biker would be pretty sick but you sort of do have to have another profession once you come out the other side.MR: Do you think you’d be able to develop a career and race at the same time?Ben: Yeah, looking at someone like Paul

A Huge Success

The recent Gathering of Moth’s aircraft fly-in, held on the 25 November, was deemed by

all the visitors as being a great event. Approximately 70 aircraft flew in on Friday and Saturday and departed either late Saturday or early Sunday to beat the forecasted rain at their respective home bases.

Many of the visitors, some 150 in total, stayed in local motels etc. and about 55 enjoyed Friday night dinner at Settlers Tavern. On-field catering, including Saturday night’s ‘Under the Stars’ dinner and Sunday breakfast was provided by local caterers and was well received.

Ten STOL (Short field Take Off and Landing) aircraft flew in from as far away as Rockhampton in Queensland and went on a tour of the area on Saturday morning landing at various remote locations. The same aircraft entertained spectators practicing their STOL skills with landings as short as 47m and typical take-offs in the order of 60m to 70m.

The event provides a great opportunity for people to get a close look at the various

new recreational aircraft coming onto the market with high tech instrumentation and discuss their merits with the owner/pilots.

The local radio station enhanced the day with ‘Magnificent Men in their Flying Machines’ theme music and interviews with interesting visitors including Ryan Cambell, the youngest person to fly solo around the world. Ryan, who was a 19 year old teenager when he took on the challenge, is inspirational in demonstrating determination to achieving ones dreams and has since written a book ‘Born to Fly.’

The local CFA had their specialised firefighting and rescue equipment on display and explained the functions of the units.

Again, the Bright Car Club enhanced the day with their pampered cars!

The Airport Management Association, the voluntary group that manages the airport of behalf of the Alpine Shire Council, would like to thank everyone that supported the event by attending and the volunteers

that put in the time and effort to ensure its success. Any profits the Association makes from such events are re-invested in the maintenance and upgrading of the community airport. •

Astra Wins

Astra Lodge, in the heart of Falls Creek, has been named Australia’s Best Ski Boutique Hotel for 2017

at the World Ski Awards in Austria. It is the second time the five-star property has taken out the prestigious award, having received the honour in 2016. In their fifth year, the awards are highly coveted and honour the elite of the ski hospitality industry.

The winners were announced at a special event at one of Europe’s most famous alpine towns, Kitzbühel, in Austria’s Tyrol province, on November 18. Astra Lodge proprietor Rosy Seaton says the awards are the ‘Oscars of global ski tourism,’ and are voted for by leading ski tourism professionals and ski consumers from around the world.

“Personally, we felt incredibly proud to accept the award on behalf of all the Astra team who have worked tirelessly to achieve a remarkable standard in the ski industry, not only in Australia but within the international ski industry community,” said Rosy.

“We feel that what sets Astra apart from our

WORLD SKI AWARDSpeers are the five-star facilities we have on offer but, more importantly and above all else, Astra offers our guests a sanctuary with world-class services and where our guests are always at the heart of what we do.”

The annual World Ski Awards is an international initiative to recognise, reward and celebrate excellence in ski tourism. Businesses and resorts from Australasia, the Americas and Europe compete across a number of categories, including Best Ski Resort, Best Ski Travel Agent and Best Ski Tour Operator. Astra Lodge was also a finalist in the Best Boutique Hotel in the World category - an impressive recognition that proves the property is a leader in the field. •

About Astra

Astra Lodge is one of Australia’s premier ski-in ski-out properties, and is located within the village of Falls Creek Alpine Resort. Over the 2016/17 summer, the lodge owners completed a major three-year renovation, which included an additional wing of studios and family rooms. The lodge has 27 rooms, a modern alpine restaurant, cocktail bar, world-class wine

cellar, and a cosy lounge area with open fireplace. There is also a library, an on-site day spa, a heated indoor magnesium pool, sauna and steam room, kids play room and a state-of-the-art ski drying room. •

Guided Walks

Beginning as an idea for further promotion of our summer trade, the Curated Bush Walks, organised

by the Falls Creek Historical Society committee with the fabulous support of Lisa Logan at Diana Lodge have proven to be a huge success. Summer guests (and winter skiers at Falls) on a walk last summer, after a delightful lunch and glass of wine at Cope Hut commented that they had really enjoyed the experience and felt it was the “best thing Falls Creek had ever done!” Your Ed will take that every day!

Now with some valued support from Tourism North East, a programme of nine walks is planned for this summer, beginning with a mid-week walk next week, Wednesday 13th December.

The mid-week walk is designed to enable locals, who have an interest in the area, who would like to better help their guests/clients, and who would like to enjoy a

WEST KIEWA OPEN SPACEYou Can Help

Ever since the UKVCA was formed, the cleaning up of the area opposite the Information Centre, under the large

power lines, has been on the project list. Many of our members remember this as a great family play area when the SEC were in control of the entire area, and would like to see it become that again. It has taken considerable time to identify which groups are responsible for the area and its care, but this has finally been resolved and we have had considerable support from AusNet services, who are responsible for the area under and surrounding the powerlines. At this time just a year ago, DELWP and NECMA became involved in the scheme and a considerable amount of time, effort and money went into clearing the river banks of invasive plant species, followed by work and plantings by the Green Army and Secondary College students.

Five community organisations signed onto the planned Committee of Management for the project for further cleaning up of the river frontage of the West Kiewa River upstream from the Kiewa Valley Highway bridge. Since then there have been many meetings with DELWP and NECMA into the mechanisms for progressing this project. Unfortunately, we are at a stalemate and are currently applying for a Conservation Licence to work on the river banks. However, we do need to see the project progress and to this end the UKV Lions Club, one of the signatories to the project, have agreed to sponsor a community working bee to clean up the grassed areas. This working bee is scheduled for Sunday, April 23rd., 10am to 1pm to be followed by a BBQ lunch provided by the Lions Club.We would be highly delighted if you could help on this day.Our main tasks at this time are to clean up the open space along the roadside and

under the powerlines so that the mowing contractor has a clear run through and under the trees, and hopefully to remove some of the additional obstructions such as piles of cut tree residue.Participants would need to dress appropriately, especially with good protective footwear, and bring gloves and any gardening tools which would be suitable - loppers, secateurs, small chain saw, whipper snipper, brush cutter, trailer etc. and a water bottle. Parking will be in the carpark opposite the Information Centre and down the road signed ‘to the Gorge Walk’.On arrival, each person will need to register at the Lions Club table so that they are covered by their volunteer insurance. They will be assigned a specific area in which to work depending on the tools they have available and will work only with their own tools. If there are any further inquiries please direct them to Mary or Keith Pike, 5754 1668. •
