Contact: 9638426159 New Delhi: The NDA was hope- ful of enlarging support for its presidential nominee with sec- tions of the opposition like Sam- ajwadi Party and NCP indica- ting that a “credible candidate” who is not a saffron hard-liner could be acceptable as the next occupant of Rashtrapati Bha- van. The NDA candidate, who will be announced before PM Narendra Modi departs for the US on June 24, is likely to be an experienced politician with par- liamentary experience, political sources indicated. The possibili- ty of a non-political person as nominee is being ruled out. Urban development mini- ster Venkaiah Naidu who inter- acted with several opposition le- aders is understood to have rece- ived a “positive” response from SP chief Mulayam Singh and NCP leader Sharad Pawar. Both opposition veterans conveyed that a contest could be avoided if a candidate of stan- ding were to be put up for Presi- dent. Their stance seems to be ba- sed on the numbers in the electo- ral college clearly favouring BJP while the leaders did not seem overly committed to opposing the ruling coalition. Pawar is, however, heading the opposition search commit- tee for a candidate. But BJP lea- ders believe he can still pitch for consensus as long the govern- ment’s nominee was able to gar- ner broad support. Naidu spoke to BSP chief Mayawati as well and the Dalit leader is understood to have said that BJP should put up a nomi- nee who can be seen to stand for the values of the Constitution and has a good record in public life. There is, however, a distinct possibility of a contest despite the government’s outreach to the opposition as Congress and Left leaders remain unconvin- ced by BJP’s arguments for a consensus. BJP ministers Rajnath Singh and Naidu who met Cong- ress chief Sonia Gandhi on Fri- day told her that the NDA candi- date will be announced prior to Modi leaving for the US. They said he (Modi) had asked them to seek suggestions of opposi- tion parties with regard to likely candidates for the post. BJP party members met CPM general secretary Sitaram Yechury as well but both the Left and Congress leaders suggested the talks were not fruitful as the government had no names to of- fer. BJP members on the other hand said they were keen to he- ar the opposition’s suggestions that could be taken into conside- ration while finalising the ru- ling coalition’s choice. The BJP strategy seems to be to try and not let the election become an ‘NDA versus the Rest’ affair and it is looking to gain the support of at least some of the parties currently in the opposition camp. The saffron camp is also fair- ly certain that some parties like Congress and the Left are unlik- ely to support the NDA nominee. Sensing the government’s game-plan, sources said that the intent was to break opposition unity. The search committee set up by opposition leaders is ex- pected to meet soon but it may wait till the NDA name is out. The opposition remains wary of an NDA choice that may gain wi- der support. The discussion with Sonia, who was assisted by Congress leaders Ghulam Nabi Azad and Mallikarjun Kharge, also saw a reference to the circumstances surrounding the election of A P J Abdul Kalam and Pratibha Pa- til as Presidents.“We were ex- pecting them to suggest a name. Then we would have discussed that within our own party and with other opposition parties,” said Azad. In Search Of Consensus Candidate Prez nominee: NDA reaches out to oppn New Delhi: Amid unrest among farmers for multiple reasons in different states, the Centre has increased the MSP of pulses, oilseeds and cotton for 2017-18 crop year and also convinced seed associations to curtail prices of hybrid seeds by 10%. The MSP of tur (arhar) was increased from Rs 5,050 per quintal (including bonus) in 2016-17 to Rs 5,450 per quin- tal (including Rs 200 bonus) in 2017-18 — a hike of Rs 400 per quintal. Similarly, the support price of Urad has risen from Rs 5,000 (including bonus) per quintal in 2016-17 to Rs 5,400 (including bonus) per quintal in 2017-18. In case of moong, it stands increased from Rs 5,225 (including bonus) per quintal in 2016-17 to Rs 5,575 (including bonus) in 2017-18. Among oilseeds, the gov- ernment has increased the MSP of groundnut-in-shell (Rs 4,450 per quintal), soya- bean (Rs 3,050 per quintal), sunflower seed (Rs 4,100 per quintal), sesamum (Rs 5,300 per quintal) and nigerseed (Rs 4,050 per quintal). TNN Centre hikes MSP for pulses, oilseeds, cotton Mumbai: Weeks after pitching for RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat in Rashtrapati Bhavan, the Shiv Sena has now suggested agriculture scientist Dr M S Swaminathan as the NDA candidate for the presidential election. The move is being read within the BJP as another attempt by an intractable ally to confuse the NDA camp at a time when efforts are being made to forge a consensus on the name. Uddhav Thackeray will discuss the issue with BJP national chief Amit Shah when the latter calls on him, Sena MP and spokesperson Sanjay Raut said on Friday. Shah, who is on a three-day visit to Mumbai to review party matters, is slated to visit the Thackeray residence on Sunday. The meeting is mainly intended to pacify the Sena in the run-up to the presidential election for which the BJP needs its ally’s votes. “Actually, RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat is the Sena’s first choice for president post. However, in case this doesn’t happen, we would back Dr Swaminathan for the top post. The Sena chief will discuss the issue with Shah during their talks,” said Raut. TNN Sena now wants Swaminathan as Prez TIMES NEWS NETWORK New Delhi: While recent devel- opments like the US abandoning the Paris accord have caused a major setback to the fight against the devastating impact of cli- mate change, scientists are warning that time is running out. Communities around the world are experiencing climate change through extreme weath- er events. The least that can be done is to ensure that businesses, communities and individuals act in whatever way possible. The JSW-The Times of India 8th edi- tion of Earth Care Awards (ECA) is calling on organisations, in- dustries and individuals to apply for ECA awards by August 4, 2017. The Intergovernmental Pan- el on Climate Change (IPCC’s) fifth assessment report had high- lighted that India’s agriculture sector will face the maximum im- pact of climate change. The re- port had also suggested that In- dia will face an increase in both mean and extreme rainfall in monsoon, floods and droughts are likely to increase and temper- ature variations could make dis- ease outbreaks more frequent. In fact the World Meteorological Or- ganisation (WMO) recently said, “It is very likely that the number of cold days and nights has de- creased and the number of warm days and nights has in- creased on the global scale. In large parts of Europe, Asia and Australia, it is likely that the fre- quency of heat waves has in- creased.” This is why this time ECA is emphasizing on climate change mitigation and adapta- tion across sectors. The awards will be in four categories: Community based mitigation and adaptation in water resources, agriculture, forestry and other land use, In- novations for climate protec- tion, GHG Mitigation in large enterprises and Leadership in Urban Climate Action. The Earth Care Awards (ECAs) were launched in 2007- 08 and are jointly sponsored by JSW and The Times of India. The ECA aims to address miti- gation and adaptation com- plexities at a larger level, and from 2012 the awards started reaching out to the SAARC re- gion. Centre for Environment Education (CEE) has been the knowledge partner. The proc- ess is supported with a well-de- fined technical and methodo- logical framework for assess- ment of GHG mitigation and adaptation parameters to de- fine the evaluation process. CEE assists the Earth Care Jury in determining the crite- ria and evaluating the propos- als through desk based review and field verification. From 2012, TERRE Policy Centre has also joined the ECA group as an outreach partner. For the 8th edition of the awards there is an eminent jury including RA Mashelkar, president, Interna- tional Research Alliance; Karti- keya V Sarabhai, founder direc- tor, CEE; Rajendra Shende, chairperson, Terre; Aneeta Ben- ninger, executive director, CDSA; Rajat Gupta, director, McKinsey; Chandra Bhushan, deputy director general, Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) and Suhas Wani, director, ICRISAT Development Centre. The ECA award includes a ci- tation and a trophy. In the “com- munity” and “innovation” cate- gories, recipients of the awards are also given cash rewards, as de- cided by the jury. Those interested in applying can get more informa- tion at www.earthcareaward- s.com and download the ECA guidebook from the website. ECA is also on twitter @EarthCareA- wards. Last year the Cochin Interna- tional Airport and the Panaji City Corporation had won under “Leadership in urban climate ac- tion” category, Saguna Rural Foundation had won under “In- novations for climate protection,” Nature Environment & Wildlife Society (NEWS) and Bangladesh- based PracticalAction had won under “Community based miti- gation and adaptation in water re- source, agriculture, forestry and other land use” category. Calling green warriors to apply for Earth Care Awards Bhopal: A 23-year-old farmer from Sehore has killed himself, taking the number of kisan deaths in MP to 10 in just seven days, even as another debt-ridden farmer attempted suicide earlier on Friday. Four of the 10 farmers who committed suicide are from CM Shivraj Singh Chouhan’s constituency, Sehore. Mukesh, who got married just three months back, took poison on Thursday evening. In Hoshangabad’s Rendhal village, farm labourer Babulal Verma set himself on fire and has sustained 60% burns. TNN Farmer kills self, another battles 60% burns TIMES NEWS NETWORK
