issue, in fact, is a written testimony

of the cult of the best tattoos on the

world scene, providing essential

continuity to the world of tattoo art

that is constantly evolving. Let’s face it:

we feel a bit like “ethnographers” too

and via the various galleries of this new

edition of Tattoo Collection (animals,

butterflies, Maori, pin ups, roses,

monkeys, snakes, sport, time, tigers,

tribal, vessels, cartoon, horror, music,

portraits, Samurai, lettering, mermaids,

sharks, skulls, traditional, birds and

zombies) we endeavour to bring you

the best of culture, artistic talent (from

the tattoo artist) and emotion (the

tattooed person). In short, everything

that is behind a great painting on skin.

This time the news comes directly from

the capital of England. We discover that

Fuel, a graphic design studio based in

London has recently launched its own

archive dedicated to Russian criminal

tattoos. These tattoos, for the record,

are divided into 739 original drawings

by the expert hand of Danzig Baldaev

and are accompanied by the

photographs (of the various criminals)

of Sergei Vasiliev. Fuel’s collection

includes over 3000 tattoos that Baldaev

himself made during his time as a

prison guard between 1948 and 1986.

With only the help of his trusted pencil,

the guard acted as an ethnographer

and managed to penetrate a different

world – that of the symbology

surrounding prison tattoos – where

drawing after drawing reflects the

rituals, traditions and crazes of a genuine

society that was totally hidden from the

outside world. With his 739 drawings

(apparently worked on by night in a

small appartment in St. Petersburg),

Baldaev managed to achieve fully his

aim which was to document this

fascinating and extremely important

period in time. The same could be said

for Vasiliev’s photos, who by portraying

the same prisoners added further

authenticity to Danzig’s work. These

images on film could be handed down

for posterity, to reflect and preserve the

habits of the Russian underworld. It is

reading curious and significant news like

this, that we at Tattoo Collection feel we

can continue (with the necessary
