In my painting I have tried to rekindle a fewevocative memories for those of us oldenough to remember the last days of Britishsteam in 1968. Our proud steam railwayheritage did not go out in a blaze of glory.In the premature rush to progress into thenew shiny age of diesel and electric, no-oneseemed to care. Almost brand new steamlocomotives were going to the scrapyardafter just five or six years. I have paintedtwo BR Standard 9F locos, regarded bymany to be the ultimate in steamdevelopment. Loyal right to the end, like

the enginemenwho tended themwith such lovingcare, theyneverthelessended their daysproud but in filthyexternalcondition, somegoing to thescrapyard afteronly five years inservice.

In 1967, I spent three frantic weeks tryingdesperately to get something down on tocanvas in the form of working sketches fromlife; sometimes just a few hours in the shedsat Guildford and Nine Elms. I hoped thenthat these sketches would be useful sometime in the future; this has proved to be so

with one picture painted in Guildford Shed between 10.30 in the eveningand 4.30 in the morning just days before the end of steam in the south ofEngland. There could be no attempt at accuracy in the portrayal of thelocomotives in front of me. It was purely a colour note and in any case, itwas so dark that I could hardly see the canvas in the dim light of the shed.The photograph gives an idea of the appalling conditions in which Iworked; it shows me working in York locomotive sheds in 1956 - now thelocation of the National Railway Museum. Clinically clean now, for me, itwas much nicer in those days with all the dirt, the soot, the smoke, allperhaps summed up in the word, atmosphere, which I have attempted toportray in Giants at Rest.
