Palermo Saint Lucy Festival Hotel Olimpo
Messina & Tindari Saturday, December 1st Visit Messina and its 12th century Cathedral containing the remains of King Conrad, ruler of Germany and Sicily in the 13th century. The building had to be almost entirely rebuilt in 1919-1920 after the devastating 1908 earthquake. It is also home to one of the largest astronomical clocks in the world, built in 1933 by the Ungerer Company of Strasburg. We will also go to Tindari known for its cherished Black Madonna. PalermoSaturday, December 8thJoin us for a tour of Palermo, Sicily’s largest and most cosmopolitan city! We will visit the Royal Palace and Mt. Pellegrino, which is famous for the St. Rosalia Sanctuary. We’ll also enjoy the wonderful views of the “Conca d’oro,” the area of Palermo where the best oranges of Sicily are grown. Time permitting; we will then visit the Capuchin Catacombs in the afternoon. Inside these catacombs are the mummified remains of Capuchin Friars that were embalmed and hung on the walls from as far back as 1533 up until 1920. Siracusa & Saint Lucy FestivalThursday, December 13th Visit the archeological area of Siracusa, built on an ancient Greek settlement. We will see many sights including the Ear of Dionysius, Cordari Cave, the Greek-Roman Amphitheater and the historic island of Ortigia. Once there we will see the cathedral that was built around a Greek structure, the Temple of Athena, and the mythological Fontana di Aretusa, a freshwater fountain that flows out of a cave towards the sea. If we time it right, we’ll get to watch the procession of Saint Lucy the Patron Saint of Syracuse which marks the beginning of the Christmas Festivities. Cooking Class - Sicilian Christmas Menu Friday, December 14thLearn to prepare the traditional Sicilian cuisine served at Christmas time! These dishes include: baccalà (cod) on a fennel and orange base, orecchiette with broccoli and ricotta cheese in a “basket,” Sicilian meatloaf with peas, and orange jam crostata (tart).
