• Identify, assess and control the hazards relating to coronavirus

A Case

COVID-19 Case Definition:

• High temperature

• New, continuous cough

• Loss of, or change to, sense of smell or taste

(as at 18/05/20)

A Contact

Direct close contact:

• Face to face contact within 1 metre for any length of time

• eg being coughed on, face to face conversation, skin contact

• eg children, staff or customers in a ‘bubble’

Extended close contact:

• Within 2 metres for more than 15 minutes

• eg travelling in a small vehicle

These still apply when face coverings are worn

An Outbreak

2 or more confirmed cases in the same group / class / bubble / office

space in the same setting within 14 days (not a household)

Suggests spread in the setting

A Cluster

2 or more confirmed cases in the same overall setting within 14 days (no clear link)

Suggests spread from the community

Principles

Infectious period = from 48 hours before symptom onset (or date of test) to 7 days after

Incubation Period =

time between exposure to the virus and developing symptoms

= up to 14 days (usually shorter)

Someone with a positive test = a confirmed case

They isolate 8 days Contacts isolate 14 days

Someone with symptoms = possible case

Isolate Get tested - NHS portal / 119

Scenario 1

A staff member calls in sick and tells you that overnight they have developed a cough

What questions do you need to ask? Check they and their household are self isolating. Check they have arranged to

What action/s does the venue need to take?Confidentially inform close contact staff so they can be vigilantIf test is confirmed – PHE will advise:Isolate close contacts, cleaning, communications, look out for symptoms

Scenario 2

A family calls your venue to tell you that a visitor who visited two days ago has tested positive for covid-19

What questions do you need to ask? Ask customer for details (name, contact details, date of symptoms, date & time

of visit, any close contacts, where they sat/were on the premises)

Ask PHE to confirm the test result

What action/s does the venue need to take?If test is confirmed – PHE will advise:

Isolate contacts, cleaning, communications, look out for symptoms

Scenario 3

Two customers facebook your venue to tell you they visited last week and have Covid-19

What questions do you ask? As before – confirm contact details & dates with customer

Confirm test result with PHE & get their advice

What should the venue have already done to prevent outbreaks & keep staff & customers safe?Distancing, contact details, enhanced cleaning & hygiene, bubbles

What further action/s does the venue need to take?Negative test results – no further action

Positive test results but visit was 2 days pre-symptoms – no further action

Positive results & visited while infectious – PHE advice, isolation, cleaning, possible temporary / partial closure
