Why is it Irregular?• Some verbs are spelled differently
in the past tense in order to maintain their pronunciation.
• Example:
– Buscar: c to qu • Buscé---Incorrect (loses the
hard c sound)• Busqué---Correct (maintains
a form of the c sound)
The Irregulars-In the preterite, verbs that end in –car,-gar,-zar
are spelled differently in the yoyo form in order to maintain pronunciation.
-car: cqu-gar:ggu-zar:zc-Examples of IrregularsBuscar-----(yo) busqué Pagar-----(yo) paguéEmpezar-----(yo) empecé
Other Irregular Preterite Tense Verbs (“y” verbs)
• These verbs also require changing in the past tense in order to maintain pronunciation.
