What was your
inspiration for the
Androgyny collection?
I didnt really have onesingle thing as inspirationfor the collection, ratherthe collection formed frommy own natural interest
in gender and what reallydepicts males and females. The collection also has a lotto do with my sexuality aswell, as in gay world, theregenerally exists dominantmasculine alpha malesversus more femininemales, and I took thisideology forward to create
the nal pieces.
What made you decide to
use the model featured?
Hes a good friend of mine
but, again, I didnt reallyhave a stark inspirationspecically. My workis always very personaland its usually drawnfrom experiences Iveencountered throughoutmy own discourse. Themodel featured in manyof the images, and as seenhere, is a friend who Ivebeen through a lot with so Irelate to him strongly. I look
at him and feel as thoughIve known him all my lifeand I wouldnt be able torecognise life without himat the moment so I thoughtWhy not do a seriesfeaturing him?.
Would you say ultimately
the Androgyny collectionis an extension of your
own life?
I would, however I wouldntsay its an extension of meas if it was a third ear butrather more of a big part ofmy life that I felt needed a
visual exploration.
The model appears to
look quite empowered and
sharp. What made you go
for such a piercing look?
With the photography ofpeople, I believe that eyestell a story, more thanany words could everdescribe, and ones eyesare the ultimate windowinto ones soul. I would saymore frequently than men, women generally havemore pretty eyes and in myown life, Ive always beentold I have quite feminine
eyes so I really wantedthe collection to go moretowards being about me,rather than anything else.Luckily, my dear friendfeatured does have quitefeminine eyes also, andthus I wanted to pay a greatdeal of attention to thisby emphasising the detailwith the blue and pinkcolours. By changing oneeye to pink and the otherto blue, Im symbolisingthe stereotypical genderconnotations we as asociety implement into ourchildren and the wholeconcept of gender overall. The dierent colour eyesare so important here, as theimage explores extensiveambiguity to the level whereit becomes impossible todene his gender, and thusexplores gender enigma, without actually giving a
nal conrmation.
