Testing

The Certification Programme defines the proposed means of compliance with the type certification basis :

Engineering evaluation, inspection and testing

Testing include laboratory, ground or in flight test , and simulation

• The acceptability of specific kind of testing as means of compliance is based on the evaluation of its adequacy

• However the usage of specific kind of testing can be demanded in the rules

Testing

1. For the test article:(i) That materials and processes adequately conform to the specifications for the proposed type design;(ii) That parts of the products adequately conform to the drawings in the proposed type design;(iii) That the manufacturing processes, construction and assembly adequately conform to those specified in the proposed type design; and

2. That the test equipment and all measuring equipment used for tests are adequate for the test and are appropriately calibrated.

Virtual Testing

Virtual testing can be defined as a method of testing based :on usage of simulation instead of physical test and on the usage of modelling of the physical article , instead of the physical article

Satisfy the key elements of the physical test ?when and to the extent

the adequacy of the non physical test is ensured

Virtual Testing

A virtual model is, however, always an approximation of

reality.It is necessary to verify the adequacy of the modelling

Results obtained from computer models should be compared to

that of the real world behaviour.

This is essential to get acceptable virtual testing.

Virtual testing

Virtual testing, as modelling or simulation in a computer environment is today an acknowledged technology.

The simulation, has long since passed into common usage in the Aerospace Industry

But not yet fully accepted by the certification authorities especially where system is complex and needs fine detail.

Virtual testing

VT can support development and certification

Technologies that could reduce the number of physical tests needed would clearly be welcomed.

In virtual testing, materials can be characterized and their performance predicted via the use of computer

models.

Virtual Testing

In a certification process the virtual test can provide support and integrate or replace the physical test

The acceptability of Virtual Testing as means of compliance pass through a Validation process

When good agreement is exhibited between VT model predictions and experimental measurements the potential for this technology should result in savings in both resources (materials, labour, etc.) and time.

Shorter development or certification time, reduction of physical prototypes and ability to test situations that can otherwise not be

tested beforehand, optimisation of technical solution and performances….. are solid arguments for a continued evolution in

this area.

Inadequacy of the simulation or modelling or representation of the physical article , lack of validation of

the model

The consequences depend on the role of VT :as support or replacement of the physical test

in the worst situation affecting the validity of the compliance demonstration

Virtual testing needs to establish its credibility

A gradual process of introducing VT for certain tests will aid its acceptability .

In the design, certification and particularly in safety risk management, the application of advanced simulation techniques leads towards cost reduction, design robustness and optimisation

opportunities

Virtual Testing

The key to an efficient use of virtual testing could be a correct correlation of virtual and physical testing

The optimal amount of physical testing in relation to virtual testing can vary from system to system , from objective to objective , from phase to phase .

It also depends on the type of applications to be solved or products being addressed.

Future of Virtual testing

The introduction of Virtual Testing in regulations can have clear benefits.

The limits and condition of use of Virtual testing needs to be accurately defined before fully recognised.

Legislators and Manufacturers should work closely together to recognise the use of Virtual Testing technologies.
