Welcome to Probe Concierge and SecurityServices Limited.
Our sister company, Probe Investigations (UK) Limited, was formed back in 2000
by two former police detectives and in those early days the company was
primarily concerned with providing surveillance services to corporate clients.
In 2001, the company welcomed an approach from a retail jeweller that had
experienced some problems, including an armed robbery at one of its
showrooms. The company was able to deal with this one client in complete
isolation and consequently tailor services specific to the needs of that client.
Within a matter of two months, another retail jeweller approached the
company, having also experienced a serious robbery. The second client had
observed the service Probe had delivered and wanted the same at their
showrooms.
There followed a steady line of enquiries as retail jewellers suffered attacks at
their premises or lived in fearful anticipation of crime. Steadily, Probe grew its
customer base around the retail jewellery sector and, in effect, became
specialists in that field.
The company understands the high standards that are demanded by jewellers.
We understand the high risk involved.
The company has worked hard with its clients to develop best practices and to
encourage ‘target hardening’ through raising awareness and preparing for any
crisis situation. This is a continual process.
The company continues to provide investigative services and these account for
more than half our business. This added resource has been very useful to our
clients on a number of occasions when investigating staff dishonesty and
debtors. We have also been able to deploy surveillance operatives in response to
intelligence alerts.
The company is very proud of its reputation and moves swiftly to deal positively
with any problems or complaints. Thankfully, these are very few and far
between. Probe Concierge and Security Services Limited enjoys excellent
working relationships with all its clients. We are true to our claim that we work
with clients and not just for them.
Today, we have an established team of security operatives, including a number
that are licensed to conduct close protection operations. Alongside them is an
equally proficient team of investigators.
The company is overseen by Managing Director, Peter Farrington, a co founder
of both Probe companies. Peter is a former police officer and currently a proud
member of The Association of British Investigators and The World Association
of Detectives. The security team is directly managed by Paul Campbell B.A.
(Hons) who is an experienced security professional and member of the
International Professional Security Association. 3
The Benefits of Security Operatives
Before we address the benefits of deploying security guards at premises, we
must first examine the perceived problems that accompany such a decision. The
first problem of course is the cost. Probe Concierge and Security Services Limited
operates a very attractive fee structure and will discount fees to those clients
that are multiple users of our services. In the security profession, there is a world
of difference in terms of quality. For example, a guard that protects a building
site overnight would not attract the same level of fees as a polished guard that
interacts with clients’ customers at a prestigious showroom.
There is a false perception that guards deter customers from visiting premises.
This isn’t so. The general public are very used to seeing guards at retail
establishments in every town and city across the UK.
There is a further perception that guards damage the image of a brand. We
agree that this is possible. We have witnessed guards at premises who have
been slovenly, scruffy, dozy and generally ineffective. We have heard guards
using inappropriate language or simply speaking when they shouldn’t be. This
is attributable to a number of factors – poor selection process, poor pay scale,
poor training, poor customer liaison and poor supervision.
The benefits of having quality security operatives far outweigh the negatives.
Firstly, the presence of a guard offers an immediate deterrent to potential
criminals. The equation is similar to installing a burglar alarm on a house. It may
not necessarily prevent the determined burglar but it will redirect most
prospective offenders to weaker targets.
Costs are tax deductable. It is a valid business expense and, in most cases, the
profit generated by our clients’ business will attract a level of taxation that can
absorb the cost of security services.
The investment in quality guards can be considered as a means of brand
enhancement. The presence of a smartly dressed, customer friendly operative at
the door of premises indicates a level of prestige.
Staff performance is enhanced by the presence of an operative. They relax in the
knowledge that the entrance is now under control and entrants to the premises
are being vetted prior to admission. It allows high value goods to be
demonstrated with more freedom and confidence.
Staff are reassured that, in the event of a serious incident, our operatives will
boldly deal with the matter. We have always done so.
The guard will attend to customers as they enter and leave. This is vital to ensure
that the customer’s visit is remembered positively and a return or
recommendation can follow. It is particularly useful during busy periods or when
staff levels are low as the operatives are all capable conversationalists and can
attend to customers until a staff member is a position to take over. This is
practiced routine.4
At times, especially leave periods, lunch breaks etc, there may be low staff levels.
The presence of a guard allows for greater flexibility in this respect as the
minimum requirement for shop floor presence can be retained with the
inclusion of the operative.
Our guards are vigilant at all times. They are not sentries. Their role includes
carrying out observations and reporting suspicious activity. This aspect of their
role cannot be carried out by our customers’ staff. It is a vital part of crime
fighting as the objective is always to prevent the commission of crime ahead of
tackling criminals in the act.
For customers that have previously used other suppliers, our services are a
welcome improvement. This is partly attributable to our particular expertise and
‘hands on’ approach but overall, it is the quality of our operatives and the
manner in which they carry out their duties that is impressive.
For customers that have not previously used security services, they have
gradually adjusted and we are confident that they would never be without a
security operative ever again.
5
How we deal with actual incidents
Though the presence of a guard will be sufficient to deter the majority of
criminals, there is a further level of criminality. In the last decade our presence
at showrooms has displaced offenders and forced them to select alternative
targets for their attacks. We have had relatively few serious incidents to deal
with. On those occasions, we are pleased to say that our guards have utilised
every ounce of their training and their experience. Our team has stood and
faced the criminal enemy to protect the staff, customers and stock that we are
there to guard.
Detailed below are the incidents that have arisen.
Robbery in Chester
Three offenders were involved in this incident. The first offender approached the
door of a jewellery showroom. He was wearing a suit and on the face of it,
appeared to be a genuine customer. As the guard opened the door, the offender
pushed against it, to stop the guard closing it straight away. He produced a
handgun and began pointing this at the guard. At the same time, two
accomplices were able to push past the first offender and enter the shop.
Our guard grappled with the gunman and finally propelled him out of the store
and slammed the door shut. The gunman fled. By this time, the two offenders
were smashing their way through display cabinets and windows inside the
showroom while staff looked on, terrified. Our guard then managed to confront
the two hammer wielding offenders and enable the staff to evacuate the
premises via a rear exit using a pre determined drill. The offenders fled the
showroom via the front door with a minimal amount of stock.
We took control of the scene until the police were in attendance. Following their
investigations, the offenders were identified as being Estonians and extradition
proceedings led to convictions in the British courts
Attempted robbery in Manchester
A lone gunman approached a jewellery showroom and waited at the door until
the guard opened it. He then produced a handgun and pointed it at the guard’s
chest. The guard took hold of the man by his arm and repelled him out into the
street, whereupon he fled the scene, empty handed.
Attempted robbery in Altrincham (1)
Three masked offenders aboard a stolen car drove at high speed towards the
showroom. Our guard saw them coming and raised the alarm and commenced
the evacuation drill. He brought down the external window shutters.
The offenders rammed a display window with the vehicle and then attempted
to remove the contents of the display. Our guard was joined by a passing
member of the public and managed to disperse the offenders. Our guards
captured one, unmasked him and handed to him to the police as they arrived.
The remaining three all fled and were later arrested by police.6
Attempted robbery in Altrincham (2)
Almost identically, three offenders aboard a stolen car approached the showroom.
Again, another guard this time, spotted them and raised the alarm, bringing down
the shutters in the process. The offenders rammed the window and attempted to
steal the contents of the display but on this occasion a police vehicle arrived at the
scene almost immediately and the offenders fled. They completed their escape by
hijacking a passing car which was later found burnt out.
Attempted robbery in Crewe.
A high street jewellers was targeted by offenders in a high powered stolen car.
Our guard observed the vehicle approaching and realised that they were about
to strike. He activated the shutters and implemented the evacuation drill. The
offenders were unable to reach the windows and fled empty handed.
Attempted robbery in Liverpool
Two offenders were admitted to the store by staff using a remote control device
which is against our advice. As our guard stepped forward to take control of the
door ( having been standing a short distance away from it assisting staff) one
of the offenders jammed a gun in his chest and began shouting instructions to
‘get down’ to the staff. Our guard implemented his training and spoke slowly
to the offenders, thus taking control. They attempted to break a display window
but failed. The offenders then fled the scene. Nothing was stolen. Our guard
regained control and managed the scene.
Robbery in Liverpool (1)
One Saturday morning in December, one of our guards was manning a
showroom that has an open door policy. A customer was inside the showroom
viewing a high value piece and this had led to our guard closing half the double
door and then positioning himself in the open aperture to prevent a ‘snatch
and run’ offence. Then, the guard saw a vehicle approaching through a
pedestrian only zone. Aboard the car were four masked men.
The first offender leapt out and attacked the guard with an axe. Our guard
defended himself and sent the offender sprawling. This allowed enough time to
withdraw into the showroom and close the door. He instigated the evacuation
procedure immediately.
The guard then activated all security devices including smoke cloak while the
determined offenders battered the door with axes and hammers. Finally, the
door yielded and the offenders broke through into the showroom. However,
due to the thick smoke, the presence of our guard and the time lapse since their
arrival, the offenders were reduced to a lame attempt at smashing a display case
before fleeing empty handed. All staff and customers were safe and unharmed.
7
Robbery in Liverpool (2)
Shortly after Christmas, one Monday morning, a stolen car screeched to a halt
outside a jewellery showroom in Liverpool. Our guard reacted spontaneously
and sounded all the alarms while lowering the window shutters in anticipation
of an attack. He directed staff to withdraw to a pre arranged safe place and
calmly coordinated them as the staff coolly removed stock to safety from the
windows as they went!
Three men began to systematically attack the display windows. The fourth man,
struck the door with a sledgehammer on 16 occasions
Our guard realised it was imperative to prevent the offenders entering the
showroom because once inside, the staff were at high risk and the high value
stock was much more accessible. The guard placed all his body weight against
the door to resist the attempts to enter it. CCTV footage later revealed that the
offender ran at, and struck, the door on 16 occasions while our guard stood fast
to stop the frame buckling and ultimately stopping them entering the store.
The offenders finally penetrated one window and fled with a relatively small
number of items.
Robbery in Bolton (1)
Our guard was carrying out an external patrol at a showroom that is positioned
at a three way junction and has a number of ‘blind spots.’ His keen observations
caused him to notice, at some distance, two female members of the public that
expressed a look of surprise. He realised that they were reacting to something
they had seen and this caused him to investigate. He then discovered three
masked men, dressed in boiler suits and carrying sledgehammers had alighted
from a car further along the road and were running towards the showroom in
such a way that they had clearly hoped not to be seen by anybody inside the
premises.
Our guard raced to the premises and raised the alarm, evacuating the staff
immediately while securing the door behind him.
The offenders pounded the door until it gave way. They were able to enter the
premises and attack some internal display cabinets. However, the staff were
safely out of the way and police assistance had been summoned. Our guard was
then restricted to shouting warnings to the offenders and providing a
commentary on his radio, coordinating the town centre CCTV room to the
situation. The gang were forced to flee with a limited amount of stock.
8
Robbery in Bolton (2)
At the same showroom, a second attempt was made. On this occasion the
guard was inside the premises as a gang of masked men arrived and tried to
force their way into the premises. Our guard took control and evacuated the
staff while calmly double locking the front door.
In the interim period, smoke cloak had been installed and the guard duly
activated this while providing commentary over the radio and ensuring that the
police were summoned.
The offenders managed to break through the door but were disorientated in the
thick smoke and by the shouting of the guard who was concealed amongst it.
They fled the scene.

Conspiracy to Rob
Our guard was on duty in Manchester city centre when he carried out an
external patrol. He noticed a male standing in a doorway across the road from
the premises he was guarding and observed the male apparently talking into
what he thought was a concealed telephone.
Our guard monitored the situation covertly, and then observed a second male
loitering in the vicinity who appeared to be out of place. Fortunately, a police
vehicle arrived in the area and our guard was able to discreetly communicate
with the officers who then began to approach the first suspect. As they did,
both males ran off in different directions, pursued by the police officers. The first
male was detained nearby and found to be in possession of a two way radio
concealed in his coat. It was switched on and was receiving frantic messages
from his accomplices. Also in his possession was a metal bar purposely bent to
allow it to fit around the back of the offenders hand like a knuckleduster. It is
believed that the purpose of this item was to threaten staff with and also to
smash display cabinets at the showroom.
The male was arrested and found to be a well know criminal from Liverpool. He
was charged and bailed. While awaiting a trial date, the male was again
arrested, this time in Liverpool during the commission of an armed robbery at a
betting shop.
Conspiracy to Steal (1)
Our guard was on duty in a showroom at Chester when a male customer
arrived. He sat at a desk while a member of staff attended to him. The male
asked to see high value goods. Our guard’s attention was drawn to the male
because although he was wearing a suit, it was ill fitting and inconsistent. A
second customer had arrived separately and was browsing in the showroom,
attended to by a member of staff. Again, our guard assessed the situation and
considered that the behaviour of this man was unusual. He communicated his
suspicions using a codeword system, thus alerting staff.
The guard carried on monitoring the two males and realised that the seated
man, was watching the second male in a mirror, positioned at the desk. Our
guard then placed himself in the view of the male and ensured he was aware
that he was being watched.
The guard’s body language and discreet intervention was sufficient to displace
the two men, who quickly made their excuses and left. The police were
informed and they advised that the two offenders were known to them and that
enquiries were ongoing. The pair appeared to be about to commit a snatch and
run offence.
10
Conspiracy to Steal (2)
A guard was on duty at a Manchester city centre showroom when he noticed a
man had walked past the premises on two separate occasions in the previous
few minutes. He withdrew into the showroom in order to be able to monitor
the man covertly. He then saw him walk to the window of the showroom and
pretend to browse the stock but, at the same time, press his hands against the
glass, testing its strength and rigidity.
The guard made himself known and the man walked quickly off. Our guard was
able to communicate this information to further members of our team
positioned at other showrooms in the vicinity and from there; our team
monitored the male while coordinating the CCTV system in the city centre and
directing police patrols to him. The male joined a female accomplice in a nearby
cafe and the two were intercepted by police. The man was found to be in
possession of a spring loaded centre punch which we believe he intended to
break glass with.
Both the male and female were known to the police and already wanted by
them for other offences of theft in the vicinity. They were duly arrested.
11
Day to day incidents
Suspicious incidents are a regular occurrence. These range from peoplebehaving
oddly to taking videos or photographs of premises. Our team have identified
persons carrying out reconnaissance at showrooms, driving by in stolen vehicles
and in general, assessing the potential for crime at the locations we protect. By
dealing with these incidents on the spot, we disrupt the offenders’ planning and
more importantly we reveal to them that we are there to obstruct them.
It is vital to realise that the above list describes incidents that have happened
over a ten year period across a wide geographical area. The information tells us
that our presence has a definite deterrent value but when offenders seek to
attack the premises we guard, our team provide an impressive and effective
response.
Probe Concierge and Security Services Ltd has created a number of documents
that are designed to be informative and useful to our clientele. They are used to
develop best practice and to raise awareness. Again, this further underlines our
approach in working alongside our customers and not just for them.

France: A CountryHit By Heists
The spate of robberies hasspawned an unprecedentedphenomenon: a Facebook pagesupporting a French jeweller whoshot dead a teenage robber inSeptember. The page has so fardrawn 1.6 million "likes."
Shop owner Stephan Turk's actionhas divided France, withsupporters arguing for the right todefend ones property amid ageneral climate of insecurity, whilecritics condemn the use of violenceand vigilantism.
In the UK, of course, we have seensimilar news when villains havebeen on the wrong end of violentacts committed by victims of crime. The key is to avoid being in thatposition in the first place byimplementing proper proceduresand offering a clear deterrent toprospective criminals.
France has been hit by a series ofhigh-profile jewellery robberies thisyear, and gangs from EasternEurope are believed to be behindmost of them.
The most spectacular of these wasat a seaside resort’s Carlton Hotel, where thieves made off with jewelsworth more than 100 million eurosin a raid in late July. In early August, four men rammed their car into anupmarket jewellery store which wasalso near Place Vendome in Paris, making off with a two-million-eurohaul.

What makes the difference?
Probe Concierge and Security Services Limited is very different to any
other supplier of security services. Here are a dozen features of the
company that make us stand out from the crowd and are very
attractive to new customers, particularly within the retail jewellery
sector –
1. The company doesn’t just stop at providing manned guarding
services. As our name suggests, we carry out investigation work on a
commercial basis and can supplement our security services with
various ‘add ons’ from time to time.
2. We have always had an ethos of working with our customers and not
just for them. We have a close relationship with all our clients and
maintain an understanding of their likes, dislikes and everyday
requirements as we go along.
3. We have an input into the security planning of all our clients. This
begins with an initial assessment, delivering advice and training and
in some cases, writing or reviewing security policy.
4. We keep our clients informed of trends in criminality by delivering
refresher training, circulating on the spot alerts and by distributing
our regular newsletter.
5. Behind the scenes, our managers and investigators are involved in
gathering intelligence and liaison with other parties, notably police
forces, town centre security teams, security managers and insurers
groups.
6. Our team is handpicked. We never advertise vacancies. Our operatives
are paid well above the average level in this sector. This ensures that
we can be highly selective; we retain staff long term and provide an
incentive to remain focused and disciplined.
7. Our team is closely supervised by our security coordinator.
Additionally, we distribute feedback forms to each of our clients and
carry out mystery shopping operations to ensure that our guards
deliver top quality service all the time.
8. Our team attend regular refresher training sessions, arranged by the
company. This ensures they bond as a team and have a clear
understanding of the company’s expectations and standards.
9. Our service doesn’t stop at providing guards to showrooms. We
assist our clients in planning exhibitions and functions, transporting
stock and controlling the scene at an external event.14
10. We provide a 24 hour response service as part of our package to
accompany staff to premises out of hours in the event of an alarm
activation or incident that requires attention.
11. We understand the importance of adding value. Our guards are
always smartly dressed, clean and very presentable. They present a
welcoming, positive image to any visitor or customer at the premises
we service.
12. Our team is focused on customer service. We ‘meet and greet’
customers and direct them as appropriate. This creates an upmarket
atmosphere at showrooms and improves the overall experience of
the customer.
15
What do others say about us ?
2010 saw the first ever Crimestoppers Awards on Merseyside. Following two
violent and audacious robberies in Liverpool, two of our operatives were
proposed as candidates to receive the ‘ Retail Crimestopper of the Year Award’
in recognition of their bravery and determination tackling the offenders.
The selection panel found that they could not separate our two operatives and
on that basis, they shared the award as joint winners.
Our two operatives, Ian Pugh and Will Freeman Dunn are pictured below,
accepting their awards.
Will Freeman Dunn receives his award.

Pictured is our guard Will Freeman Dunn receiving a gift from Malcolm Edwards
of the Security and Audit Dept, Aurum Group Holdings in recognition of his
brave actions in tackling a gang of armed raiders at a jewellers showroom in
Liverpool. Also pictured is Ian Rigby, showroom manager. Our client was
sufficiently impressed by the actions of our operative, that they very kindly
presented him with a gift to acknowledge their appreciation. 17
