Angle Films also has a first-look deal at Universal Pictures. Its mandate is to finance and produce genre films with budgets ranging from $15 to $30 million. In addition, Blum is partnered with Scott Hanson on the BlumHansonAllen Film Fund, through which he is executive producing The Wettest County In the World, directed by John Hillcoat and starring Shia LaBeouf and Tom Hardy. Kavanaugh-Jones executive produced Insidious, 2011's most profitable film, directed by Saw's James Wan and produced alongside Jason Blum, as well as Jeff Nichols' Take Shelter and the Strause Brothers' Skyline. Some of Automatik's upcoming films to be released in 2012 include: Safe, starring Jason Statham, directed by Boaz Yakin; A Bullet To The Head, starring Sylvestor Stallone, directed by Walter Hill; Welcome To The Punch, starring James McAvoy and Mark Strong, directed by Eran Creevy; The Bay, directed by Barry Levinson; Lords of Salem, directed by Rob Zombie. Currently, Automatik is in production on several other features as well, including: Dead Man Down, starring Colin Farrell and Noomi Rapace, to be directed by Niels Arden Oplev and
Hummingbird, starring Jason Statham, to be directed by Steven Knight.
Charles Layton (Executive Producer) is President of Alliance Films. Prior to Alliance Films he was Executive Vice President of The Weinstein Company and, before that, Miramax Films. He is a graduate of the NYU Film School and has a Masters degree from the NYU Stern School of Business.
Jeanette Brill (Associate Producer) has over twenty years of production experience working in the film, TV, and music video industries. In 1995 she landed at Sony Pictures Imageworks as Visual Effects Coordinator on “James and the Giant Peach”. This leap would give her the technical foundation for the new digital mediums used in filmmaking today. Her work at Sony continued for two years, working on such projects as “Money Train” and “Michael”.
In April 1997, Jeanette took a position at Mill Film in London as a VFX Associate Producer. This opportunity of working abroad gave her the beginnings of working in film on a global level. During her two years there, she helped to set up a new film division and worked on “Lost in Space”, “Waking Ned Devine”, “Enemy of the State”, “Hilary and Jackie”, and “Still Crazy”.
Since establishing CatchLight in 1999 she has served as an executive producer for romantic comedies “In the Weed” and “Amy’s Orgasm” and Producer for the documentaries “Red, White and Buddha”, and “World Festival of Sacred Music”, and feature films “Break a Leg”, and “Heart of the Beholder”. As a gun for hire line producer she has worked on several independent features and projects including “Krews”, “Rings” which was picked up by Dreamworks, and “Six Billion Paths to Peace” with the Shinnyo-en Foundation. Her latest accomplishments have been line producing for Producer Jason Blum on the blockbuster hits “Paranormal Activity 1, 2 and 3”, Oren Peli’s follow up “Area 51”, Sony’s release of James Wan’s film “Insidious” and Barry Levinson’s environmental thriller, “The Bay”, among other soon to be released films. In 2012 she joined Blumhouse as the Head of Production.
Bailey Conway (Associate Producer) After working in the Film Finance Division at Creative Artists Agency, Conway joined Automatik at its inception in April 2010 to run the day-to-day operations of the company and shepherd development and production. She just completed principal photography on Jay Chandrasekhar’s The Babymakers starring Paul Schneider and Olivia Munn where she served as Associate Producer. She is currently involved in numerous features including Safe, starring Jason Statham; Bullet to the Head, starring Sylvester Stallone; Insidious, directed by James Wan; and The Bay, directed by Barry Levinson.
Prior to joining Automatik, Conway served as Executive Assistant to Paula Wagner (former CEO of United Artists) where she oversaw Ms. Wagner’s daily operations, managed all of her business relationships and presided over development. Before that, she was the Acquisition/Creative Executive for The Steel Company, a first-rate consultant to foreign film distributors. Conway graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts from New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts.
Jessica Hall (Associate Producer), Director of Development at Blumhouse Productions, joined Blumhouse in 2010. Through their deal at Universal, the company is focused on making low-budget, wide-release genre movies. Jessica is involved with over 50 projects in various stages of production and development, including MOCKINGBIRD, PLUSH, DARK SKIES, CURVE, THE BAY, THE BABYMAKERS, SINISTER, and LORDS OF SALEM, as well as the 2011 releases PARANORMAL ACTIVITY 3 and INSIDIOUS.
After joining the DreamWorks story department in 2006, Jessica served as Executive Assistant to Marc Haimes, a Senior Production Executive, working on the development, production and distribution of such films as HOTEL FOR DOGS, THE HEARTBREAK KID, DISTURBIA and TRANSFORMERS I & II. In 2009, Jessica joined Marc to form Elevation Pictures where she was promoted to Creative Executive. The company’s first two specs, ELEVATOR MEN and JITTERS, sold to Summit Entertainment and Paramount, respectively.
Christopher Norr (Cinematographer) Cinematography literally runs in Christopher’s blood. His father Carl Norr is an award-winning commercial D.P. who from a very early age engendered in his son a love for the beauty of the moving image. Conscious of also instilling a work ethic, Carl had Chris loading
mags by his side at the age of 13 and by the age of 18 Chris was getting paid to shoot short films.
His early experiences as a camera assistant landed him work on seminal films like Woody Allen’s Crimes and Misdemeanors and Rob Reiner’s When Harry Met Sally. During that time he also studied from the sidelines other directing greats like Sydney Pollack, Ron Howard, and Oliver Stone, and award-winning cinematographers such as Sven Nykvist, Giuseppe Rotunno, Bob Richardson, and Gordon Willis, but it wasn‘t long before he was at the center of the action, shooting numerous independent feature films, dozens of commercials and music videos himself and putting his learned skills to work.
Recent projects include Family Weekend, Sympathy for Delicious, Staten Island, What Doesn’t Kill You, 1937, and The Hottest State. His film Queen Freak is currently in production.
While Christopher is first and foremost a D.P., he continues to take advantage of all opportunities to learn more about the art form, which has included collaborations with Director Michel Gondry and D.P. Ellen Kuras on the visually experimental films Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and Be Kind Rewind as well as operating on Martin Scorsese’s Rolling Stones Shine a Light and Fran Lebowitz documentaries.
David Brisbin (Production Designer) has production designed over 20 movies including ‘In The Cut’ for Jane Campion, ‘Drugstore Cowboy’ and ‘My Own Private Idaho’ for Gus Van Sant, ‘The Lookout’ for Scott Frank, ‘Twilight: New Moon’ for Chris Weitz, and two previous Scott Derrickson films, ‘The Day The Earth Stood Still’ and ‘The Exorcism of Emily Rose’. Trained initially as an architect (BFA, Rice University) and interned under noted American architect, Robert Venturi, Brisbin also studied filmmaking (MFA, Cal Arts) under the late film director, Alexander Mackendrick. After receiving the Henry Luce Scholars grant, Brisbin worked as a T.V. news reporter in Manila where he covered the fall of the Marcos regime. In recent years he has pursued his related interests in New Media as a resident at the New Media Lab of the Canadian Film Centre, and in documentary film as director / producer of the feature documentary, ‘Nice Hat! 5 Enigmas in the Life of Cambodia’.
Frederic Thoraval (Editor) born and raised in France. After film school, he began working in the editorial department of a commercial production company in Paris. For six years he was involved in the creation of numerous commercials before transitioning into film and becoming an editor on the Luc Besson produced “Kiss of the Dragon,” starring Jet Li and Bridget Fonda
In 2004, a meeting with Pierre Morel marked his debut as a lead editor with the movie “District B13,” which was chosen as one of TIME Magazine’s Top Ten Film in 2006. Since then, Thoraval has worked on various films, including Luc Besson’s “Angel-A” and Pierre Morel’s “Taken” starring Liam Neeson, which was a U.S. box office success.
He currently lives in Los Angeles with his wife and their three children.
Christopher Young (Composer) Golden Globe-nominated composer Christopher Young has scored an impressive number of features in virtually every genre, all with strikingly original music. The spine-tingling “Hellraiser” showcases the composer’s seminal upbringing in horror; the new-techno sound of “Swordfish” displays his versatility; the resonant, genuine Celtic sounds of “The Shipping News” display his attention to detail; to the heart-pounding rhythms of “Spider-Man 3″ are all evidence of his willingness to experiment. These scores are among the nearly 100 films that embody the work of this prolific composer.
Though Young had built a solid reputation scoring horror and science fiction pictures, Director Jon Amiel entrusted Young to score Warner Bros.’ dramatic thriller, “Copycat.” The film and score received critical-acclaim and Amiel requested the composer for his follow-up film, the Bill Murray comedy, “The Man Who Knew Too Little.” They subsequently would work together on the Fox feature, “Entrapment” and later, “The Core.” During this time, Young scored MGM’s “Species,” for which he received a Motion Picture Sound Editors Golden Reel nomination for his work. His next work was the resonant score for “Murder in the First.”
Not wanting to be restricted to features, it was at this time that Young received the first of two Emmy nominations, despite scoring only four telefilms. The nominations were for the dramatic urgency of his music for the fall-of-Saigon film, “Last Flight Out” and for the smoky jazz of the critically acclaimed HBO picture, “Norma Jean & Marilyn.” When Academy Award winning director Norman Jewison hired Young to score Universal Pictures; “The Hurricane,” Young officially entered the pantheon of A-list composers.
Immediately following “Bandits,” Young scored the Miramax romantic drama, “The Shipping News,” directed by Oscar nominee Lasse Hallstrom. Young received both a Critic’s Choice and Golden Globe nomination for this strikingly
original work. Earlier in 2001, Young further displayed his versatility with the composition for Warner Bros.’ “Swordfish,” as he incorporated elements of DJ Paul Oakenfold’s hypnotic trance into his orchestral score.
Sam Raimi hired Young to score his high profile film “The Gift.” The relationship would continue to include additional music on “Spiderman 2,” scoring “The Grudge” and “The Grudge 2″ and scoring “Spiderman 3.” Young continued his successful working relationship with Raimi more recently on the thriller “Drag Me to Hell.” Young has also collaborated with Oscar-winning director Curtis Hanson on “Wonder Boys” and “Lucky You”. His other works include the scores for “Head Above Water;” “Beauty Shop,” starring Queen Latifah, “Ghost Rider,” and “The Exorcism of Emily Rose.” Chris kept his momentum going, scored “Untraceable,” starring Diane Lane. Furthermore, Young delved into the dramatic with “Sleepwalking,” starring Charlize Theron. Young worked closely with Theron who was also a co-producer on the film. He then found his way back to his roots in “thrillers” with the action packed Vampire flick “Priest”. More recently Chris has worked on “Black Tulip” and the Hunter S. Thompson drama titled “The Rum Diary” starring Johnny Depp.
Abby O’Sullivan (Costume Designer) is a New York based Costume and Fashion Designer. She has contributed to Italian, British and American Vogue magazines, as well as V, Bazaar, Paper, Elle, W and WWD, as a stylist and liaison. The films Abby worked on have been nominated for two Academy Awards and granted distinctions by the Gotham Awards, Sundance Film Festival, Independent Spirit Awards, National Board of Review and The Screen Actors Guild, among others. Some of her films include NoNAMES, Ten Stories Tall, Adam, Adventures of Power, and Frozen River. Inspired by the fantasy element of the costume world, Abby set out to create women’s line KEEN-O CALDER debuting for spring 2010. She continues to design ensembles for a range of colorful characters in burlesque, theater and film.
Sheilla Jaffe (Casting) has more than two decades of experience and more than 120 credits to her name, including recent films “MacGruber” and “Rocky Balboa” and a new CBS drama pilot starring Dennis Quaid, Michael Chiklis, and Carrie-Anne Moss. With casting partner Georgianne Walken, she won a primetime Emmy Award in 1999 and received five subsequent nominations for casting “The Sopranos,” and she was nominated from 2005 to 2007 for her work on the HBO series “Entourage.” Jaffe is also a four-time Artios Award winner, an honor bestowed by her peers in the Casting Society of America.
“Entourage” was part of Jaffe’s prolific partnership with show creator Mark Wahlberg, which officially began with the film “The Italian Job.” She has since cast the majority of Wahlberg’s projects, including “The Fighter,” “Invincible,” and the upcoming films “Ted” and “Broken City.” Jaffe has also maintained long-term relationships with other actor-producers, such as Sylvester Stallone, Ethan Hawke, and Steve Buscemi. (A collaboration with the latter on “Trees Lounge” resulted in David Chase hiring Jaffe and Walken to cast the pilot for “The Sopranos.”)
Ruth Salen (Casting) Ruth has worked in casting on movies such as The Fighter, Observe and Report, Pete Smalls is Dead, September Dawn, Freedomland, The Big Valley, Sunnyside up and on the TV Series “Johnny Zero and Jury.”
