Description

The pressure control for bulk melters in the series BM 20 / BM 200 –hereafter also referred to as pressure control – may be used only tocontrol the processing pressure for applications that process hot meltadhesives. The pressure control is based on frequency converters in theseries 8200 vector with function module application I/O and thecorresponding units for controlling drives with three-phase motors forwhich the speed can be varied. The pressure control may be used onlywith components and control systems approved by Nordson.

Any other use is considered to be unintended. Nordson will not be liablefor personal injury or property damage resulting from unintended use.

Intended use also includes the observance of Nordson safetyinstructions.

The pressure control feature may not be used under the followingconditions:

 After manipulation of electrical components

At extremely high humidity (frequency converter is visibly wet)

 In defective condition.

WARNING: The surfaces of the frequency converter maybecome hot during operation.

The block diagram shows the principle layout of the pressure controlfeature. The actual pressure measured by the pressure sensor iscompared to the pressure setpoint. The PID controller integrated into thefrequency converter generates a control output signal for the motorspeed according to the deviation.

NOTE: The pressure control feature is active only when the input E2 ison High (Also refer to parameter PSP OFF). The keypad then displaysPS2.

InstallationWARNING: Allow only qualified personnel to perform thefollowing tasks. Observe and follow the safety instructions inthis document and all other related documentation.

The pressure control feature is parameterized before delivery.

WARNING: Risk of electric shock. Failure to observe can resultin personal injury, death and/or equipment damage.

WARNING: Disconnect unit from line voltage.

WARNING: The frequency converter is still energized afterswitching off. Wait at least 3 minutes before beginning anywork!

NOTE: Use only original Nordson frequency converters. They areparameterized and guarantee the required function. Refer to manualFrequency Converter Series 8200 vector, section Repair - ReplacingFrequency Converter.

When ordering a replacement frequency converter always include thecorresponding Nordson part number (P/N): Refer to Components ofPressure Control Feature.

Defective fuses may be replaced only when there is no voltagesupplied to the unit. Use only fuses from Nordson original spare partsdeliveries. There are no fuses inside of the frequency converter.

The plug-in terminals may only be plugged in and unplugged whenthere is no voltage being supplied to the unit.

1. Disconnect all plug connections and cables.

2. Loosen the screws on the mounting device and remove the frequencyconverter from the electrical cabinet.

3. Mount the new frequency converter.

4. Connect all cables and plug connections.

OperationWARNING: Allow only qualified personnel to perform thefollowing tasks. Observe and follow the safety instructions inthis document and all other related documentation.

Avoid frequent switching of the mains in order to prevent an overloadof the internal switching current limiter. Switching may not occur moreoften than every three minutes.

When condensation has formed on the frequency converter, it mustfirst evaporate before the unit can be started up.

The pre-adjusted PID parameters for the frequency converter can bemodified via the keypad.

NOTE: The parameters for the frequency converters are factory set.Modifications should be made only in exceptional cases (only to adaptthe PID controller for pressure control) and only by trained personnel.Refer to Frequency Converter Series 8200 vector, section Operation,Parameterization.

The PID control parameters may need to be modified for specialapplications.

This section explains operation of the motor part of the control systemCS 20 for bulk melters BM 20 / BM 200 for pressure control.

Refer to Control System CS 20 for Bulk Melters BM 20 / BM 200, sectionOperating the Motor Part for detailed information regarding operation.

The pressure control feature is activated via the parameter PSP OFF.In place of the speed, Pcr is displayed as an indication for the pressurecontrol. Instead of a speed, a pressure setpoint must be determined. Itcan be entered as a value (manual mode) or set via pilot voltage(automatic mode). The speed required to reach the pressure is calculatedinternally by the control system.

When pressure is controlled, the parameters PSL, PSH, PSP, PAH, PALand the display Pcr are present. For a description of the parameters, refer to Display Overview, Settings Overview Control System CS20 forBM 20 / BM 200.

NOTE: All input is in bar, even when the pressure display is switched topsi.

The measuring range of the pressure sensor can be modified with theparameter PRS or with the selector switch on the analog module. If aftermodification the values are no longer within the permitted (measuring)range, the parameters are returned to the factory settings.

PAH = Pressure monitoring for overpressure with pressurecontrol

PAL = Pressure monitoring for underpressure with pressurecontrol

Overpressure and underpressure values are differential values.

The purpose of pressure monitoring is to indicate underpressure or overpressure and to stop the motor if appropriate when overpressure occurs.

PAL = Underpressure: When the pressure falls below the alarm limit (setpoint minus underpressure value) for longer than 10 seconds, PALappears in display 30 (Fig. 1) and the red indication lamp collective fault lights up (error number 242). If the alarm limit is below 0 bar (e.g..setpoint = 2 bar, PAL = 3 bar), no underpressure alarm can be triggered (Refer to example).

PAH = Overpressure: When the pressure exceeds the alarm limit (setpoint plus overpressure value) for longer than 20 seconds, PAH appears indisplay 30 (Fig. 1) and the red indication lamp collective fault lights up (error number 241). If the alarm limit is exceeded for longer than 60seconds, the motor is stopped and the the green indication lamp ready goes off (error number 240).

Underpressure and overpressure monitoring can be deactivated by setting the parameter to less than 2 % (display OFF).

The error indications PAL and PAH are reset by switching the motor off and on.

Refer also to Setting Parameters.

PrS = Variable pressure measuring range

The variable pressure measuring range serves to adjust special pressure sensors to the control system.

PrS Factory setting: 100 bar (1450 psi) Note: Special function; the parameter is only available if the selectorswitch S 1 of the analog module is in position 5 (see Analog Module)Setting range: 1 to 680 bar (14 to 9860 psi) switch S 1 of the analog module is in position 5 (see Analog Module)

Setting increments: Up to 100 bar: 0.1

Over 100 bar: 1.0

240 Overpressure alarm from pressure monitoring.

Value of parameter PAH was exceeded forlonger than 60 seconds (Refer to Operating theMotor Part, Parameter Overview).

The error indication Phi appears in display 30.

Motor is stopped.

Reset overpressure alarm (switch motor on/off), then check the following:

- Is the safety valve polluted and thus blocked?

- Is the safety valve set incorrectly?

- Is the safety valve defective?

- Is the filter polluted?

- Is the adhesive temperature too low?

- Is the value of parameter Phi below or too close to the safety valve setting?

- With pressure control via pilot voltage: Was pilot voltage changed too quickly(EMERGENCY OFF parent machine)?

- Is the safety valve polluted and thus blocked?

- Is the safety valve set incorrectly?

- Is the safety valve defective?

- Is the filter polluted?

- Is the adhesive temperature too low?

- Is the value of parameter Phi below or too close to the safety valve setting?
