Rally exposes hazards of using plastic bags

NEW CHAPTER: Karumuttu T.Kannan, Managing Director of Thiagarajar Mills,launching the website of Madurai Chapter of Soroptimist International on Friday.

MADURAI: Around 5,000 school and college students took out a massive rally organised bythe Madurai Chapter of Soroptimist International (SI) in the city on Friday to deliver amessage on the hazards of plastic carry bags.

The rally was flagged off by Commissioner of Police K. Nandabalan in the presence of Vice-Chancellor of Madurai Kamaraj University R. Karpaga Kumaravel.

The rally, which started at the Race Course Ground, culminated at the Gandhi MemorialMuseum where a function was held.

Speaking on the occasion, Karumuttu T. Kannan, Managing Director, Thiagarajar Mills,lauded the initiative against indiscriminate use of plastic bags.

Pointing out that a serious change was occurring to the global climate, he said that theyounger generation must confront the danger posed to the environment.

Besides giving away prizes to best placards of the rally, Mr. Kannan also launched thewebsite of Madurai Chapter of SI.

R. Vasudevan, Dean, Thiagarajar College of Engineering (TCE), said that plastic by itselfwas not the danger and its misuse was.

Dr. Vasudevan, who invented and patented a technology to use plastic for laying roads,called for segregation of waste. He requested the SI to take an initiative to request schools to

Huge rally on the hazards of plastic bags in Madurai

Thousands of school and college students took out a massive rally in the city on Friday to deliver a message on thehazards of plastic carry bags.

An initiative of the Madurai Chapter of Soroptimist International (SI), the students were also joined by people fromvarious walks of life.

The rally was flagged off by the city Commissioner of Police, K. Nandabalan, in the presence of the Vice-Chancellor ofMadurai Kamaraj University, R. Karpaga Kumaravel. The rally, which started at the Race Course Grounds,culminated at the Gandhi Memorial Museum where a function was held.

Speaking on the occasion, Karumuttu T. Kannan, Managing Director, Thiagarajar Mills, lauded the initiative againstindiscriminate use of plastic bags. Pointing out that a serious change was occurring to the global climate, he said thatthe younger generation must confront the danger happening to the environment.

Besides giving away prizes to best placards during the rally, Mr. Kannan also launched the website of MaduraiChapter of SI.

R. Vasudevan, Dean, Thiagarajar College of Engineering (TCE), said that plastic by itself was not the danger and onlyits misuse caused problems.

Dr. Vasudevan, who invented and patented a technology to use plastic for laying roads, called for segregation ofwaste. He requested the SI to take an initiative to request schools to collect plastic bags through students.

Explaining his technology, he said that one tonne of plastic or ten lakh plastic carry bags could be utilised to lay onekilometre of road. A total of 2,500 km of such roads have been laid in Tamil Nadu besides at Himachal Pradesh andKarnataka.

Speaking earlier, Anitha Rajarajan, president of SI Madurai Chapter, said that several educational institutions in thecity had declared their campus to be ‘plastic free zone.’ They are Thiagarajar College, Thiagarajar College ofEngineering, Lady Doak College, K.L.N. College of Engineering besides several schools.

Rally on safe disposal of plastics

With the objective of creating awareness among the public about minimising the use and disposal of plastic materials,a rally will be taken out in the city on October 2, by different sections of the society.

An initiative of the Madurai Chapter of Soroptimist International, the rally will include students, members of differentassociations and the public, its president Anitha Rajarajan told journalists in Madurai on Tuesday.

Colleges such as Thiagarajar College, Lady Doak College and schools including Mahatma School and TVS School hadbeen invited. Several educational institutions will also be declared as ‘plastic-free’ campus on that day, she said.

Cloth shopping bags, with eco-friendly slogans, will also be distributed to the participants of the rally so that use ofplastic could be reduced. The organisation was also working towards segregation of waste at source.

Another initiative being contemplated in this direction was advocating use of paper bags at ‘Uzhavar sandhais,’ meatand chicken shops.

Ms. Anitha said that the rally would commence at Race Course Ground and conclude at Gandhi Memorial Museum.Other initiatives of the Madurai Chapter include donating educational aid material to students of Corporationschools.

A programme to create awareness about breast cancer among urban and rural women has been planned for nextmonth by roping in a doctor from Chennai, she said.
