Youth Advocates Understanding of Tourette Syndrome, Mental Health in Children

Kansas City, Missouri – January, 2016

11-year-old Pierson Phillips, an Independence native diagnosed with Tourette Syndrome (TS), will be delivering an address to attendees of a conference meant to encourage a fuller understanding of both TS and the difficulties facing young people struggling with mental health issues. The event, sponsored by the Children’s Service Fund Coalition, takes place Friday, January 22nd, 2016 at the Kaufmann Foundation in Kansas City, Mo. from 3:00 – 4:00 p.m.

Pierson has spoken to audiences in the Metro area before in order to promote comprehension for what obstacles children face when trying to understand mental health issues. His current project is collaborating with his friend and partner, 10-year-old Olivia, to start the non-profit Tourette Strong; the organization will serve to educate, empower and support children in the KC Metro area with TS.

Topics included in the speech will include: the vital importance of early help, the nature of a diagnosis as opposed to a label and the danger in dismissing children’s concerns about their mental health.

Pierson continues to advocate for TS and children’s mental health awareness to foster appreciation for the hardships facing children encountering mental health concerns for the first time and cultivate knowledge in parents, teachers, siblings or anyone who may be able to help them in a difficult time.

This event is sponsored by the Children’s Services Fund Coalition Committee (CSFC), of Jackson and Clay Counties, a group supporting increased funding for measures designed to aid at-risk children, whether they may face difficulties with mental health, lacking a safe place to live or facing troubles for which there are currently no counselors on hand to address.
