The new Transporter series / Australian Media Launch / Sydney / NSW / December 2015 / VOLKSWAGEN /
A completely new generation of TDI engines is being launched with the
introduction of the new T series. The EA288 engine has been developed
specifically for the tough requirements of a commercial vehicle, ensuring
the longevity and ruggedness of the engine were placed as top priorities in
developing the vehicle. The TDI engines available are transversely mounted and
angled forward by eight degrees. They have a cubic capacity of 1,968cm3 and
deliver an impressive 103kW @ 3,500rpm and 132kW @ 4000rpm, while the
new engine delivers a powerful 150kW @ 4000rpm.
The sixth generation Transporter continues to showcase the unmistakable
stylistic traits of its predecessors and combines these into a powerful overall
design. Functional and versatile dimensions have always been a crucial element
in the light Commercial Vehicles sector and the new Transporter’s dimensions
offer maximum load capacity, while at the same time ensuring optimal
accessibility to the van.
Volkswagen Commercial vehicles have also integrated a wide array of intelligent
assistance systems in the new Transporter. With ABS, ESP and EDL standard
across the range, there are also a multitude of electronic aids over and above
these that make driving the T series simpler and safer including Front Assist,
City Emergency Braking (City EB) and Adaptive Cruise Control (only available in
Multivan with TDI450), as well as Driver Fatigue Alert and Multi-Collision Brakes
and to name a few.
The exterior design of the new Transporter series has been updated to enhance its

Engines and chassis
Three powerful engines with manual and direct shift gearbox
New 2.0 TDI delivers maximum torque of up to 450Nm
One litre lower fuel consumption
BlueMotion Technology across the range
The demands and expectations placed on the T series could not be more diverse.
From the simple Transporter all the way to the fully equipped Multivan, the aim
is to fulfil the customers’ needs, while placing an emphasis on their notions
of mobility and agility. Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles is responding to that
with three powerful TDI engines with a maximum power of 103kW @ 3,500rpm,
132kW @ 4,000rpm and 150kW @ 4000rpm.
The new Transporter can be coupled with a 6-speed manual gearbox or 7-speed
DSG. The Mulitvan and Caravelle are available with the 7-Speed Direct Shift
Gearbox (DSG) with sport mode and Tiptronic function. In addition, the TDI400
series for Transporter and the TDI450 series for the Highline can be ordered with
4MOTION all-wheel drive. All engines work extremely efficiently, with the carry
over engines saving around 0.5L/100km thanks to Blue Motion Technology that
is offered as standard with every model in the new T series range. BlueMotion
Technology enables Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles to offer the most
fuel-efficient, environmentally friendly engines lowering fuel consumption and
reducing CO2 emissions.
The Transporter’s chassis has always been highly acclaimed. Adaptive chassis
control (available as standard on the Generation Six and as an option on the
Multivan Highline) is even more sophisticated. It enables the vehicle to be
adapted to three driving styles: comfortable, normal and sporty. In each case,
the electrically adjustable shock absorbers adapt to the chosen style via a
preselected programme. The ‘anticipatory’ adaptive chassis control thus makes
the already exemplary handling even better.
Engines and chassis
08
The new Transporter series / Australian Media Launch / Sydney / NSW / December 2015 / VOLKSWAGEN /
The EA288 engine has been developed specifically for the tough requirements
of a commercial vehicle. Longevity and ruggedness were therefore a top priority.
The TDI engines available are transversely mounted and angled forwards by
eight degrees and have a cubic capacity of 1,968cm3. The engines with up to
103kW are boosted by a single turbocharger with variable turbine geometry,
while Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles has opted for two-stage controlled
charging in the top of the range 150kW version. In this version, the maximum
torque of 450Nm is already available in the range between 1,400 and 2,400rpm.
In general, all of the engines achieve appreciably better levels of elasticity due
to the more dynamic torque curve.
One outstanding feature is the cylinder head. Its inlet and outlet valves are
no longer arranged side-by-side, but behind each other instead. As a result,
both camshafts control both inlet and outlet valves. The benefit of this is
that due to the different duct lengths, a better maximum flow rate can be
achieved with simultaneously improved mixture preparation and combustion.
Despite yielding higher output, that saves fuel and reduces CO2 emissions.
On average, fuel consumption goes down by a litre. That is around 24 grams
less CO2 per kilometre. Traditionally bundled together in these models are all
measures for reducing fuel consumption that are still economically viable,
such as lowering the ride-height, weight reduction and tyres optimised for
low roll resistance. The stop/start system is included in all vehicles. To meet
emissions standard a SCR (selective catalytic reduction) converter is added
downstream, which electively converts the nitrogen oxide (NOx) component of
the exhaust gas into nitrogen and water, with no formation of any unwanted
by-products. The conversion is performed using a synthetically produced
32.5 per cent urea solution, such as AdBlue® (ISO 22241-1 / AUS 32), which is
carried in an additional tank with a capacity of 13 litres. This system requires
that the AdBlue® is refilled after around 7,000 kilometres by the customer or an
authorised workshop, independently from the service intervals. Injection of the
AdBlue® is done automatically.
In its development, safe and excellent handling of the chassis has always been a
top priority. Even with maximum payload and at full engine capacity, the front-
wheel or all-wheel drive Transporter impresses with outstanding dynamism and
stability. These extraordinary driving dynamics are further supported by the
great rigidity of the vehicle body.
09
The new Transporter series / Australian Media Launch / Sydney / NSW / December 2015 / VOLKSWAGEN /
The independent wheel suspension with MacPherson struts at the front and
a semi-trailing arm rear axle with separate springs and shock absorbers help
the Transporter to handle like a passenger car. In the case of most MacPherson
axles, the transverse links and anti-roll bar are not connected directly to the
vehicle body, but are attached to an auxiliary frame, which in turn is bolted to
the bodywork via vibration-reducing bearings. That leads to extremely effective
vibration decoupling, which enhances motoring comfort. In addition, anti-roll
bars on both axles suppress the vehicle’s sideways lean in corners, while load
sensitive shock absorbers, which depending on the spring’s level of compression
dampen to harder or softer degree, increase the suspension’s comfort.
The DCC adaptive chassis control for the enclosed superstructures available
in the Generation SIX and optionally in the Highline models, works in an even
more bespoke manner. It enables the vehicle to be adapted to three driving
styles: comfortable, normal and sporty. In each case, the electrically adjustable
shock absorbers adapt to the chosen style via a preselected programme.
The ‘anticipatory’ DCC is then able to make the already exemplary handling
even better. Ground clearance varies by vehicle type. The Multivan, for example,
is around 20 millimetres lower. Further lowering is achieved with the optional
sports chassis, which works with a different spring characteristic and harder
shock absorbers. The Generation SIX model comes as standard with the
dynamic chassis, which represents an optimum balance between ride comfort,
agile handling and lower clearance.
Further contributing to well-balanced motoring comfort is the servo assisted
rack-and-pinion steering, which excels through effortless operation and high
precision. With a gear ratio of 1:15.8, just 3.3 rotations of the steering wheel
are needed from one stop to the other. Despite the wheelbase of at least
3,000 millimetres, the front-wheel-drive vehicle’s turning circle is no more
than 11.8 metres. Directional stability, agility and ease of handling are among
the primary characteristics that define the Multivan’s chassis. On the Multivan
Highline and Executive models, the standard Servotronic provides maximum
steering support, facilitating easy parking and manoeuvring and safe driving at
high speed by virtue of the steering’s capable response.

Exterior design and features
More distinctive and powerful design
Front and rear carry the striking traits of the new design
New range of 16 and 17-inch alloy wheels
The T series embodies a classic design and has therefore been modernised
cautiously. The new design is sharper and has been enhanced in quality.
The lines, beads and edges run continuously from front to back. The entire
body now has the appearance of being all one piece, as if milled from a solid
block – and like its predecessors, the new T generation remains immediately
recognisable. Put through their paces every day to the hardest of tests and
developed for professionals, the Transporter is robust and reliable.
Forming the top of the T series range is the Multivan. Families and sports
enthusiasts in particular value the vehicle for its well-known flexibility and
practicality. Created for both commercial and private use is the spacious and
multi-purpose Caravelle that has also been upgraded.
Front The new generation T series can be recognised above all from its completely
new front section. Its design combines stylish linearity with a high degree of
power. Consciously positioned, clearly defined lines give the model series a
contemporary and modern yet timeless look. With the low front apron, which
straightens up almost vertically just above street level, the new generation has
also gained in charisma and exclusivity giving the front a more dynamic design.
Rear The rear view is distinctive as well. With a horizontal bead, it highlights
the vehicle’s width in a striking fashion. That is further underlined by the
wide rear window and the low reaching number plate recess, which is clearly
delineated in its geometric division, along with LED lighting of the number plate.
The horizontal division is also adopted by the rear bumper, which with several
flat areas adds further expressive contours to the back of the vehicle.
Exterior

Side Other eye-catching features include the lowered wing mirrors and the
indicator lights set dynamically within the bead. In addition, numerous newly
designed wheels define the view from the side. The Transporter comes standard
with 16-inch steel wheels with centre wheel trim with 215/65 tyres (available
in TDI340) and 17-inch steel wheels with centre wheel trim with 235/55 tyres
(available in TDI400). Also available at an additional cost are the new 17-inch
‘Devonport’ alloy wheels with 235/55 tyres. The full plastic hubcap with ten
spokes for the 16-inch steel wheels are carried over from the previous model
and are fitted as standard on the Caravelle Trendline. The 16-inch ‘Clayton’ alloy
wheels have five double spokes, while the 17-inch ‘Devonport’ alloy wheels
come with five broad spokes.
Body Colours The new Transporter is available in 12 stylish exterior colours.
Many of them are new to the range, such as Deep Ocean, Cherry Red, Grape
Yellow, Indium Grey, Starlight Blue and Acapulco Blue. Caravelle and Multivan
also offers Mojave Beige and Chestnut Brown, while Oryx White is exclusive
to Multivan. Cherry Red is being combined with Candy White, while Acapulco
Blue will form the contrasting colour to Reflex Silver Metallic for the striking
two-tone finishes on the Multivan range. The upper section of the bodywork
provides the base colour for the two striking two-tone finishes that are available
exclusively for the Multivan Generation SIX special launch model.
There are also several specific combinations that vary according to body
version and equipment line. The non-metallic colours Luminous Orange,
Deep Ocean and Pure Grey, for instance, are offered only for the vans and the
Caravelle, while Candy White and Cherry Red are available for the whole range.
As optional metallic paint finishes, Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles is offering
the following colours: Bamboo Green, Starlight Blue, Reflex Silver, Indium Grey,
Acapulco Blue, Mojave Beige and Chestnut Brown. The optional Oryx White
(available in Multivan only) and Deep Black pearl effect paintwork perfectly
finishes off the range of colours available.

Interior design and features
Transporter launched with streamlined Volkswagen design DNA
Functional features highlight modern driver’s workspace
Designers and engineers have covered a broad spectrum of design elements in
developing high-quality interiors for all versions of the vehicle: highly practical
in the case of the Transporter – bespoke and refined in the case of the Multivan,
satisfying the requirements of its different customer groups. All aspects of the
vehicles have been considered to ensure everything has its place. For example the
arrangement of storage trays and compartments depend on the vehicle model
and form follows function in the most seamless way when handling and placing
everyday items such as a folding ruler, coffee mug, mobile phone or tablet.
The three-spoke leather wrapped multifunction steering wheel underlines the
modernity of the driver’s workplace. Horizontal elements correspond visually
with vertical accents – a clear sense of order and symmetry, which with its
calm architecture conform to the ideal of great functionality and quality.
Lighting elements in the doors and foot wells create a pleasant interior
atmosphere. The newly designed seat cover ‘Austin’, finished in a premium
cloth fabric is available in Titanium Black / Moon Rock Grey. Taking functionality
into consideration, the vehicles dash panel follows the requirements of the
general working day and there are numerous storage compartments available.
On the dashboard, for example, there are two cup holders at the sides and an open
central tray. Located toward the bottom of the vehicles driver and passenger
seat area is a glove compartment with lockable flap. Added to this comes a slim
gear lever encasement, which promises ample space for any passenger sitting
in the middle on the double bench seat. The Multivan’s exclusive dashboard has
a new distinctive look that sets it apart from the Transporter and the Caravelle
for the first time.
The design of the sixth-generation Transporter’s passenger compartment
represents a significant highlight. Following tradition, it features an innovative
layout, high-quality materials and a passion for detail. The instrument panel is
clear and geometric, while the horizontal division into four levels emphasises the
width of the dashboard. Below the back-light hood with two grooves, and the
central infotainment area, the easy-to-read instruments also have an elegant
and refined look.
Interior
15
The new Transporter series / Australian Media Launch / Sydney / NSW / December 2015 / VOLKSWAGEN /
The everyday practicality of the T series’ passenger compartment continues
to be demonstrated by well-balanced ergonomic qualities and numerous
storage trays and compartments. Depending on the model, the driver and front
passenger’s seats can be electrically adjusted in 12 ways. Many of the numerous
adjustment options can then be controlled by button or toggle switch and one
big benefit is that the setting for the driver’s seat can be saved. The electrically
adjustable seats are also heated as standard.
The arrangement of storage trays and compartments depends on the model.
The key factor here is essentially the number of seats in the front passenger
area. This leads to two different dash panel layouts. While the bins and trays are
sometimes open, and at other times enclosed, it is the differently shaped centre
console that stands out. In the Transporter and Caravelle, it is the exclusively
narrower centre console and dash that varies from the Multivan version.
The Multivan has a premium passenger style dashboard with a wider centre
console that additionally houses two integrated cup holders and a pull-out
bottle holder, which like the associated glove compartment can be cooled via
the air conditioning system.

Safety and assistance systems
Front Assist
City Emergency Braking function
Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC)
Multi-collision brake (MCB)
Driver Fatigue System
Heated rear windscreen
Front and rear Park Distance Control
Hill Descent Assist
Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles has systematically tailored the new Transporter
to its different customers, factoring in their lifestyle and work scenarios.
A multitude of innovative driver assistance and safety systems are included as
standard to support the driver and protect the occupants. With ABS, ESP and
EDL standard across the range, there are also a multitude of electronic aids over
and above these that make driving the T series simpler and safer. These safety
systems also facilitate a much more relaxed form of travel – whether on holiday
or simply on the journey to work.
By means of radar, the ‘Front Assist’ with City Emergency Braking (City EB)
monitoring system (only available in the Multivan range) recognises critical
distances to the vehicle in front and helps to shorten the stopping distance.
In dangerous situations the system warns the driver visually and audibly, as well
as with a slight jolt of the brake. ‘Front Assist’ reacts here in two ways: in the
first stage the assistance system warns the driver with audible and visual signals
of any vehicle in front driving slowly or suddenly braking and of the associated
risk of collision. In parallel it gets the vehicle ready for emergency braking
– by applying the brake pads and setting the brake assistant.
Safety and assistance systems
18
The new Transporter series / Australian Media Launch / Sydney / NSW / December 2015 / VOLKSWAGEN /
If the driver fails to react to the warning, a single short jolt of the brake indicates
in the second stage the approaching danger of causing a rear end collision and
the brake assistant’s responsiveness is further increased. If the driver then hits
the brakes, full braking power is immediately available. If the driver does not
brake strongly enough, ‘Front Assist’ increases the braking pressure to the
required level, so that the vehicle comes to a stop before reaching the obstacle.
With Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), a sensor measures the distance to the
vehicle in front and the relative speed. In combination with the DSG, the ACC
system can also slow the vehicle down, for example in queues or traffic jam
situations, to a complete stop. Depending on the situation, ACC then starts up
again automatically after a predefined period. An integral component of Front
Assist and ACC is the City Emergency Braking (City EB) function, which provides
assistance at low speeds of under 30km/h and thereby offers significantly
improved safety, especially in dense city traffic. If the driver fails to see an
obstacle, the system automatically applies the brakes and ensures that the
collision-speed is reduced.
An integral component of ‘Front Assist’ and ‘ACC’ is the City Emergency Braking
(City EB) function. It provides assistance at low speeds of under 30km/h.
If the driver fails to see an obstacle, the system automatically applies the brakes
and ensures that the collision-speed is reduced. Ideally, it completely prevents
the vehicle from running into the obstacle. Approximately 22% of all accidents
involving injuries are collisions with more than one obstacle. In order to minimise
the risk related to this scenario, the Multi-collision braking system is provided
as standard across the T series range. After a collision, it automatically initiates
braking if the driver is no longer able to take action. Secondary collisions can then
be prevented. The Multi-collision braking system becomes active whenever two
sensors working independently of each other register an accident. In this event,
the system slows the vehicle down to 10km/h in stages based on a pre-set rate
of deceleration. The driver is, however, able to take back control of the vehicle at
any time. All three functions are in the standby mode. They cannot be disabled
by the driver.
19
The new Transporter series / Australian Media Launch / Sydney / NSW / December 2015 / VOLKSWAGEN /
The ‘Driver Alert’ Fatigue Detection System is available as standard across the
entire T series range. It recognises any deviations from normal driving behaviour
and recommends the driver takes a break when this appears to be necessary.
To do this, the system evaluates driving behaviour at speeds of 65km/h and
above and draws conclusions as to whether the driver is fit to drive. It evaluates
in this process various signals, such as for example steering behaviour. In the
event of any atypical actions, the system recommends that the driver takes a
break by both an audible and visual signal. The new Transporter is also equipped
with front row airbags as well as side/head airbags for the driver and passenger
as standard, while curtain airbags for outer seats in the second row are available
as standard in the Multivan range for Short Wheel Base (SWB).
Customers of the van and crewvan are able to order an optional rear view
reversing camera, while it is available as standard on the Caravelle and across
the Multivan range. The camera is activated by engaging reverse gear and relays
a precise image of the area behind the vehicle. The path of travel is depicted
by lines drawn onto the image. Also available to assist with parking is the front
and rear parking distance control system. Using acoustic signals, it helps the
driver manoeuvre into a parking space. As the vehicle gets closer to the obstacle
the frequency of the beeps increases. If the distance to the obstacle is less
than 30cm, the beep is continuous. The front and rear park distance control is
available as standard across the Multivan range.
For the TDI450 Highline, Hill Descent Control is available as an option.
By targeted application of the brakes to individual wheels, which the driver is
not able to do singularly using the foot brake, and by cutting the engine speed,
it ensures a safe, controlled hill descent. As far as is possible, it keeps the vehicle
to a constant walking pace when going down extreme inclines. On vehicles with
tow-bars, electronic trailer stabilisation also utilises the components of the
ESP system and contributes significantly to safety while driving with a trailer
in tow. The system recognises any vehicle instability caused by towing a trailer
at inappropriate speed. Through systematic reduction of engine torque and
appropriate slowing of individual wheels it settles down vehicle and trailer.
20
The new Transporter series / Australian Media Launch / Sydney / NSW / December 2015 / VOLKSWAGEN /
To optimise safety and convenience levels, a rain sensor, automatic anti-glare
rear-view mirror and the ‘Coming Home’ / ‘Leaving Home’ function are all
available. The dimmed headlights, rear light clusters’ tail lights and number plate
illumination are all used via delay or remote control to illuminate the surrounding
area. At an additional cost, the front headlights and rear lights can be equipped
with LED technology (only for Multivan). The benefit of this is primarily longevity
and low electricity consumption. Compared to a conventional halogen light,
they last more than ten times as long, most likely covering the vehicle’s entire
life cycle. The LED headlights with separate LED daytime running lights come as
standard with the Highline and Executive.

Infotainment – Networked integration
Optional in-car media audio systems
App-connect with Apple CarPlay®, Android Auto™ and MirrorLink®
Each individual generation of the T-series has led the way in terms of
technology, and was perfectly meeting the needs of the market. Volkswagen
Commercial Vehicles is equipping the T series with a completely new generation
of radio and radio/navigation systems with touch screen displays. The 5-inch
Composition Colour audio system is available as standard across the Transporter
range, while customers can choose to upgrade their vehicles with the 6.33-inch
Composition Media audio system with App-Connect or Discover Media audio
and satellite navigation system with App-Connect and Media Control depending
on specification.
The standard 5-inch ‘Composition Colour’ audio system comes complete with
an array of features such as a touch screen display, AM/FM radio with phase
diversity tuner, CD player with MP3 compatibility, AUX and SD card slot,
external USB input and a total of 4 speakers. It also offers a car menu with
convenience and service setting menus, including display for park distance
control (if fitted) and air conditioning systems. During the journey the optional
digital voice enhancer and voice control (available only in the Multivan) helps
drivers to keep their eyes focussed on what’s happening on the road. Without
any turning of the head, the driver’s voice and that of the person they are talking
to is automatically amplified over the radio system’s loudspeakers.
Offering even more extensive features is the ‘Composition Media’ radio.
The colour display is 6.33 inches and has a swipe and zoom hand movement
control function similar to that used on modern smartphones. For easy
operation while driving, Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles is for the first time
using a display that works by means of proximity sensors: as soon as the driver
or front-seat passenger moves their hand close to the touchscreen, the system
automatically switches from display mode to input mode. Using the swipe and
zoom control function, users are able to also scroll through lists or browse CD
covers of their own media library that could be stored on an SD card, for example.
Infotainment
23
The new Transporter series / Australian Media Launch / Sydney / NSW / December 2015 / VOLKSWAGEN /
At the highest specification level is the ‘Discover Media’ audio and satellite
navigation system with App-Connect and Media Control. This system also
uses a 6.33-inch colour touch screen display with proximity sensor and offers
the following features above those already mentioned in the ‘Composition
Colour’ and ‘Composition Media’ audio systems: 2 x SD card slots for music and
navigation data, 2D and 3D (bird’s eye) map views, App-Connect USB interface
for Apple CarPlay®, Android Auto™, and MirrorLink® in front centre console.
App-Connect makes it possible to show and operate selected smartphone
apps via the touchscreen display, while Volkswagen Media Control allows users
to operate the radio via a smartphone or tablet connected by Wi-Fi to the
infotainment system. When using Voice Control, the navigation system reacts
to city or street names being said aloud and calculates the route as instructed.
Over recent years, use of the internet on mobile devices such as smartphones
and tablet PCs has grown significantly. This resulted in growing demand for
instant information everywhere.
Uniting the driver and the vehicle, the two optional infotainment systems
come with the latest in Volkswagen’s innovative technologies - Volkswagens
App-Connect system, featuring Apple CarPlay®, Android Auto™ and Mirror Link®.
This technology seamlessly links driver’s smartphones to the vehicles audio
and touch screen system. For safety while driving, Transporter is fitted with
a Bluetooth® phone connectivity and audio streaming as standard.

The benefit of this is that when vehicles are parked in a row, the cargo space
can be accessed safely from the side of the road. This rear opening’s clearance
is practically identical to that of the tailgate version. The standard sliding door
with a large opening width of 1,017mm on the passenger side of the vehicle
enables easy access to loads transported deep inside the cargo compartment.
Anyone for whom that is not enough can also order the new Transporter van as a
dual loader with a second sliding door on the driver side of the vehicle. A light in
line with the respective sliding door ensures adequate illumination. On request,
the Transporter van without side windows can also be ordered with one or more
windows in the cargo compartment. Easy loading and unloading is facilitated
by the relatively low sill of just 566mm. Maximum load width is 1,700mm
and the width between the wheel housings is 1,244mm. The vehicle floor is
level throughout, making loading easy. Depending on wheelbase, six or eight
fold-out load-lashing rings enable cargo to be perfectly secured with
lashing straps. Cargo space panelling protects the vehicle body’s outer skin.
Floor coverings of various kinds are available as options.
The cargo space (maximum payload up to 1.236 tonnes) impresses in its
base version (3,000mm wheelbase and normal roof) with a cargo area of
4.3m² and load capacity of 5.8m³. This increases with a medium-high roof
(22.5cm higher) to 6.7m³. Over and above this, the van is also optionally available
with a wheelbase extended by 40 centimetres, which – with a total length of
5.29 metres – offers an outstanding cargo area of 5.0m². This produces in
the normal roof version a load capacity of 6.7m³ and in combination with the
medium-high roof a capacity of 7.8m³. The high roof variant is exclusively
available with a long wheel base and has a volume of 9.3m³.
Crewvan The crewvan range is structured in a similar way to that of the van.
The crewvan with a full set of windows (only at front of cargo area) can
be ordered in all versions consecutively with seating for up to five people.
The variable seating enables easy transporting of people, staff or work crews
to wherever they are meant to be, such as to building sites. The seats available
for the passenger compartment of the crewvan can be removed without tools,
while the triple bench seat can also be wrapped forward. All backs of the
3 person bench seats in the 2nd row can also be folded onto the seat cushion.
The high roof provides headroom inside of 1,940mm. The cargo floor fitted to all
crewvan’s is made of rubber and includes step illumination.

Single and dual cab In addition to the well-known variety of van and crewvan
models, also available is a single and dual cab. In the case of the single cab
the long wheel base increases the size of the cargo bed where it grows from
around 4.75 to 5.50 square metres. The height of the aluminium side panels,
which can be dropped down on every side, is 39 centimetres. A host of storage
compartments have been made available as standard across all Transporter
vehicles: overhead storage compartment, front sunvisors with ticket holder,
glove compartment with lockable lid, two cup holders on upper dashboard,
two open storage compartments above glovebox and an open storage area on
either side of the of dashboard to name a few. With the comprehensive range
of custom equipment available as standard, this multitude of variations offers a
transport solution for practically every task.
Passenger carriers
Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles traditionally offers the Multivan in four
equipment specification levels. In keeping with this theme, the available
equipment lines for Australian customers are: Comfortline, Highline, Executive
and the special edition Generation SIX. The special edition Generation SIX launch
model showcases numerous features that have been combined to create a very
attractively priced package.
Multivan: Comfortline, Highline, Executive
Over 30 years ago, Volkswagen unveiled a model that created a vehicle category
of its own: the Multivan. To this day, the flexible Multivan remains a unique
proposition among MPVs - it is a transporter, everyday car and recreational
vehicle all in one. The core element of its versatility is the hugely variable seating
available in the rear of the vehicle. No matter what it has to transport or carry,
the Multivan is able to handle almost any task.
Depending on trim level, there are two rotatable individual seats installed in
the front row of the back of the Multivan. Both seats are anchored to the floor
in the modified tracks, on which they can be independently snapped into their
position, turned around or easily moved on rollers without having to be taken out.
That facilitates, for example, a comfortable vis-á-vis position to the rear reclining
bench seat or a relaxed seating position with lots of knee room facing forward.
Numerous storage trays and cup holders complete the travel-ready trim.
28
The new Transporter series / Australian Media Launch / Sydney / NSW / December 2015 / VOLKSWAGEN /
Available in the Multivan as standard are two (2) dash mounted cup holders
for bottles and drink cans with additional storage, a storage box beside gear
lever, upper storage try with lid and storage compartments on the sides of
the front seats. Also available as standard across the Multivan range are coat
hooks throughout the passenger area, front sunvisors with ticket holder and
illuminated vanity mirror.
ISOFIX child seat anchorage points have been made available as standard for
2nd row Captain’s chairs and outer seats in the 3rd row. They help to integrate
an external child seat into the vehicle structure and yield the advantage that
incorrect use of any kind is significantly eliminated. Anyone not wanting to
retrofit child seats also has the option of ordering a single seat with a child seat
integrated into it, offered for both 2nd row seats. In this case, part of the seat
cushion can be raised and a part of the seatback with appropriate seat belts can
be folded out. It is also possible as an option to order individual seats instead of
the triple bench seat.
Mounted on rollers, the 3-seater reclining bench seat in the 3rd row is anchored
to the floor tracks and can be locked in any position in the back of the vehicle.
Adjusting the bench seat could not be easier: regardless of whether being
accessed from the passenger compartment or luggage space, after pulling a
lever or loop, it smoothly slides forward or backward without being folded down.
Any attached child seats can remain in place. In this way, it is easy to increase
the boot space after going shopping or to provide more legroom in the back row
when, for example, picking up more passengers. When converting it into a bed
there is a further release lever. Once that is pulled, the back can be pushed down
and a practically flat surface to lie on is created in the back. Where necessary,
the bench seat’s headrests and the folded-down backs of the front single seats
extend the sleeping area. Anyone using the Multivan to go camping has the option
of ordering the multi-flex board bed extension as part of the Goodnight Package,
which also gets fixed to the track system. In this instance, the two single seats
may be taken out of the Multivan and the high bed surface ensures additional
room for storage. The reclining bench seat can also be taken out.
The variability of the seating layout makes the back of the vehicle a veritable
playground in terms of reconfiguration. From normal boot to large cargo space
–anything is possible. Anyone needing a large cargo space in the middle or back
of the Multivan simply pushes the seats behind each other.
29
The new Transporter series / Australian Media Launch / Sydney / NSW / December 2015 / VOLKSWAGEN /
Or the seats can be taken out individually as required- this gradually increases
the luggage space up to its maximum. All that needs to be done is to remove
the track system’s front covers and the seats and bench seat can immediately
be pulled up and out from that point. Customers then have the comfort of a fully
cleared cargo space with a carpet floor covering. Integrated in its level floor are
six load-lashing rings for fixing the cargo so that it doesn’t slip in order to protect
the high-quality internal panelling from any damage. Opening and closing the
tailgate is especially easy. Aside from purely manual operation, the first level up
from the basic version provides an automatic closing aid (power latching paired
with power doors). It enables the tailgate to be closed with much less effort and
has the latch engage in the lock with a significantly less obtrusive sound.
Comfortline The seven-seat Multivan Comfortline impresses with a high level
of comfort and stylish inclusions as standard. This is inherent in the vehicles
exterior design details that feature: body coloured bumpers with black grained
radiator grille adorned with a decorative chrome strip, 16-inch ‘Clayton’ alloy
wheels with 215/65 R16 tyres (standard for SWB) and 17-inch ‘Devonport’
alloy wheels with wide 235/55 R 17 tyres (standard for LWB) that emphasise
the vehicles dynamic appearance. This continues inside the vehicle with a fully
upholstered interior with decorative trim and inserts in ‘Dark Silver Brushed’ and
‘Paviano Black’, a leather wrapped gearshift knob, and chrome accents on the
air vents. Added to these come attractive features such as a Climatronic climate
control system with dual front and rear temperature controls, Composition
Media audio system with SD card slot, a USB socket and Bluetooth phone
connectivity, sunshades for side windows in the passenger compartment,
a 3 spoke leather multifunction steering wheel, rain sensor and automatic
dimming breakaway interior rear-view mirror.
Highline Luxurious style and correspondingly high levels of comfort are the
characteristic features of the Multivan Highline. Also available with seven seats,
this vehicle is furnished with Nappa leather appointed upholstery. Externally the
Highline is recognisable with premium features such as body coloured exterior
mirror housings with a high-gloss black base, 3 decorative chrome strips and an
additional chrome strip on the lower radiator grille, front fog lights with static
cornering light function, 17-inch ‘Devonport’ alloy wheels with 235/55 R17 tyres,
LED headlights with separate daytime running lights and LED tail lights.
30

An extra sliding door on the driver side makes getting in easier and both doors
open and close as standard by just touching the handle or pressing a button,
as well as via remote control. A 3-zone Climatronic system, fitted as standard,
provides for optimum climatic conditions. All other parameters, including the fan,
are controlled fully automatically by the Climatronic system. The temperature
for both sides of the interior can also be individually controlled (also available in
the Comfortline). The 6.33-inch ‘Discover Media’ audio and satellite navigation
system comes as standard.
Executive With a total of six seats, the Multivan Executive’s interior features
premium surfaces with seats in Nappa leather appointed trim. Very comfortable
seats in the third row provide a pleasant ambience in the back. The electrical
adjustment – and heating – of the individual Captain’s seats with swivel function
and armrests incorporated into the second-row promise both an enjoyable and
comfortable ride. An optional cooling/warming box keeps the drinks and snacks
for the journey fresh, while, if needed, the independent heating system with
remote control will heat up the interior as required. The sliding multifunction
table (also available in the Highline) is highly practical and useful and can be
stored in a space-saving manner between the two single seats of the second
row. A master of functionality, the table provides a drink holder, a magazine
pocket and drawer. The top of the range ‘Discover Media’ audio and satellite
navigation system comes as standard on the Executive Multivan, along with LED
headlights that light up the road ahead perfectly.
Caravelle
The Caravelle is a classic mini shuttle bus for transporting people. It seats up
to nine passengers, is packed with storage options and offers Volkswagen’s
innovative driver assistance technology and in-car entertainment. The number
of seats in the back of the Caravelle can be varied according to need on any given
occasion. All bench seats can be taken out without tools. In the Long Wheel
Base, up to three rows of seats are possible in the back. The vehicles maximum
number of nine seats can be achieved with a number of different layouts and
an impressive number of nine seating combinations are possible. Depending on
position, it can also be folded down and rolled forward. The relevant seat belts
for the outer seats are then fitted to the respective side wall, reducing the seats’
weight and making their removal easier. In addition, all bench seat backs can be
folded down onto the seat cushion.

Exterior features of this people mover include body coloured bumpers,
a black grained radiator grille with decorative chrome strip, 16-inch steel wheels
with full wheel covers and 215/65 R16 tyres, halogen headlights with day time
running lights, optional electric sliding doors and power latching tailgate.
The interior creates a tasteful atmosphere with a 3-zone Climatronic air
conditioning system, cloth seat covering in ‘Kutamo’, step illumination in
passenger compartment and comfort lighting make it an inviting space for
longer journeys. The whole of the vehicle’s floor is carpeted and the Caravelle’s
workspace with the familiar dash panel looks prestigious. In addition, the
‘Composition Colour’ audio system with features such as a 5-inch colour
touchscreen and Bluetooth phone connectivity, USB and SD card slot are
included with the vehicle as standard. The vehicles standard features are
rounded off with lumbar support and height adjustment for both the driver’s
and front passenger’s seats.
