An Open-Top Sports Car for All Drivers

MX-5wasdesignedarounditsdriver,withathoughtgiventoeventheslightestdetailsaspartofMazda’shuman-centricdrivingposition.Pedalshavebeenoptimizedtofallin-linewiththenaturalmovementofthedriver’sfeetforgreatercomfort.Thehoodhasbeenlowered,thewindshieldA-pillarspushedbackandmademoreuprightforgreatervisibilityandtheexteriorpaintcolorhasbeenbroughtintothedoorpanels–alltoprovideagreatersensationoftheworldoutsideofthecar.Passengershavealsobeenpositionedinsettofeelin-linewiththecenterofthevehicle.

KODO—Soul of Motion Design

Keepingthefrontofthecarlowwasachallenge,givenregionalbumper-heightregulationsindifferentglobalmarkets,sotheuseofLEDheadlightsonallmodelsbecamearequirementbecauseofthesmallerspacetheyrequiretoproduceagivenamountoflight.Asonpreviousmodels,thefaceoftheMX-5Miatadefinestheplayfulnessofthecar.Theheadlights,whichhaveLEDlowandhighbeamswithabulbturnsignal,runcoolerthantheHIDxenonheadlightstheyreplaceandare4.1-percentbrighter.Theheadlightunitsarealso40mmshallower,20mmshorterinverticalheight,havea40-percentthicknessintheouterlensandareapproximately15-percentlighterweightthantheheadlightstheyreplace.

Theresults:Acleanshapewithtautlinesthatconveysasenseofleanness,stabilityandbeautifulsurfaces.

Worth the Weight

AshasbeenthecasewithallofMazda’svehiclessincetheadventofSKYACTIVTechnology,theMX-5’sweighthasbeenreducedfromitspredecessortoimproveefficiency,performance,handling,agilityandsteeringprecision.Takingmorethan150lbs.outofwhatwasalreadyoneofthelightestvehiclesforsaleinNorthAmericawasnoeasytask,soengineershadtothinkabouteachcomponentoftheMX-5toachievetheirobjectiveswhilemaintaininga50:50weightdistribution.

Theairconditionerisapproximately20percentlighterthantheunitinthepreviousgeneration.Thesofttop–laudedsincethelaunchofthefirstMX-5Miatain1990asthesingularlybest-designedmanuallyoperatedsoft-top–is65gramslighterthanbeforethroughtheintroductionofaluminumtop-bowsandsupports,andiseveneasiertooperate,yetitisinsulatedtoprovideaquieterinterior.Inmakingthevehiclelighter,thetrunkwasreshapedtohaveawideropeningandadeeperrecesstoallowfortwoweekendtravelbags,whichwasnotpossibleinpreviousmodels.

Withthe2016MX-5,theamountofhigh-tensilesteel(780MPaorhigher)usedthroughoutthestructureoftheMX-5hasincreasedfrom58percentofthecarto71percent.Allexteriorpanelsbutthewindshieldframeanddoorsaremadeofaluminum,reducingtheweightofthebody-in-whitebyapproximately45lbs.Seatsaremorethan35-percentthinnerthantheoutgoingmodel’s,owingtoanetandurethaneseatmaterialreplacingtraditionalsprings.This,inturn,allowedengineerstoremoveapproximately17lbs.fromeachseatandpositionthemlowerintheMX-5foranimprovedcenterofgravity,visibilityandfunctionalitywithintheinteriorfortallerdrivers.It’sallaboutthedetails.
