LIGHT ARTIST GERRY HOFSTETTER AND HIS WORKS OF ART

Gerry Hofstetter, born in 1962, lives and works in the canton of Zurich in Switzerland. Since 1999, the former head of investment banking and helicopter pilot has been transforming buildings, monuments, landscapes and mountains throughout the world into temporary works of art by means of his spectacular light art projections.

Gerry Hofstetter’s art does not just appeal to people’s sense of aesthetics. His light images also harbour messages. During his expeditions in the Antarctic in 2003 and 2005, in a project in support of the United Nations International Year of Water 2003, he illuminated icebergs, creating temporary memorials to alert mankind to the increasing problem of global warming and its impact on the habitat of polar bears.

Another such project involved an expedition in October 2006 to Egypt, where he lit up the White Desert, the Pyramids of Gizeh, the Sphinx and the Egyptian National Museum as a contribution to the UNO International Year of the Desert and Desertification.

As an artist, with his illuminations Gerry Hofstetter aims wherever possible to encourage the spectator to contemplate on the lit-up monument and to motivate him or her to actively consider how our planet can develop in an environmentally-friendly, sustainable manner. THE SLOGAN: “Creating History Together” UEFA EURO 2012™ is the next chapter in a story that started back in 1960 with the first edition of the UEFA European Football Championship Originally called the European Nation’s Cup. The staging of the final tournament in Poland and Ukraine, the first in Central and Eastern Europe, will definitely have a prominent place in history books. Everyone involved in UEFA EURO 2012™; organisers, host countries, host cities, players, travelling fans and fans at home – united for a common purpose – are all together contributing to another brilliant chapter of European and football history. It was such teamwork - with UEFA, the local organising committees, the host countries and several hundreds of persons from Poland and Ukraine all taking part in the selection process - that was instrumental in the identification of a slogan for UEFA EURO 2012™. UEFA.COM RELAUNCH The relaunch of uefa.com, UEFA’s official website, will take place in February 2010 when a global audience will see a new design, new architecture and various new services. In addition, Polish and Ukrainian will be added as new languages as of the UEFA EURO 2012™ Qualifying Draw which will take place in Warsaw on 7 February 2010. THE TOURNAMENT The final tournament of the 14th UEFA European Football Championship will be held in Poland and Ukraine from 8 June to 1 July 2012. It will be the third time that the final tournament is jointly hosted by two countries (after Belgium/Netherlands in 2000, Austria/Switzerland in 2008).

16 national teams will compete in a total of 31 matches to be crowned Champions of Europe and become worthy successors to the current title-holders Spain.

The format of 4 groups of four teams will be used for the last time in this tournament. The competition format will change for the next edition in 2016 as the line-up of participants competing in the final tournament will be increased to 24.

HISTORY OF THE COMPETITION Henri Delaunay, as general secretary of the French Football Federation, first floated the idea of a European Championship at a FIFA meeting on 5 February 1927. But it was not until 27 years later, when he became general secretary of the newly-born UEFA, that he could push his project further towards fruition. Sadly, he died on 9 November 1955 and it was his son, Pierre, who took over the post and the project. After agreement had been reached that the championship would be founded, the new competition was named the Henri Delaunay Cup in recognition of his outstanding services for the cause of European football. Up to now, a total of 204 final-round matches have been played, featuring 503 goals at an average of 2.47 per match. Germany is the most successful nation with 3 victories, followed by France and Spain with 2.
