Hippolyte Hentgen is a duo of artists formed by Gaëlle Hippolyte and Lina Hentgen, the name being the combination of their last names, but also the creation of a third entity that represents their joint work. The invention of a character is at the foundation of their work that draws on 1930s cartoon and comic strip, Oyvind Falström, American alternative culture and graphic arts (Robert Crumb, Mike Kelley, …), 18th century painting, the style of interwar posters, George Herriman, outsider art and of course modern art.

Based on drawings that can sometimes become sculptures, Hippolyte Hentgen’s work, clearly is figurative, prolific and unrestrained, jubilatory and full of humour, but also melancholic. The depicted landscapes often are urban or industrial zones, the working scenes in which the characters are placed form part of the collective memory because they have been used and reused in advertising and in the media, to the point that they have become clichés, the remains of a world in mutation. Hippolyte Hentgen manipulates those images using, in drawing, the mechanical reproduction of images, by putting into drawing photographs, printing drawings or associating the two media in the same piece.

Freely exploiting various medium and dimensions, Hippolyte Hentgen works with comic strips magazines or stage directors when he does not direct himself, as it was the case for the show Les Géomètres in which spacialised drawing became a volume.

The exhibition Night Sound in 40mcube focuses on this latter aspect of their work by putting together a series of drawings made from photographs found in art textbooks and a lunar décor built for a show by the troupe John Corporation. The exhibition links those two elements, staging drawing and using its great narration capacity. It becomes for the time of the opening a performance by Émilie Rousset and Perle Palombe, marked by the drawn figure of Sally Ride, astrophysicist and first American woman to have travelled in space. The décor goes back to being a sculpture when the performance is over, emphasising this multiplicity that characterises the work and the persona of Hippolyte Hentgen.

Gaëlle Hippolyte and Lina Hentgen’s work combines multiple sources; proudly borrowing from cartoons or 1930s comic strips, or referring as much to Oyvind Falström than to American alternative culture and graphic arts (Robert Crumb, Mike Kelley...)

The simplified and burlesque figures developed by Gaëlle Hippolyte and Lina Hentgen, often at full-scale, take up the space in a sensible manner. Created with a rapid, spontaneous and monochromatic drawing, those figures act like a series of protean collages that interfere with the exhibition space.

As an echo to those telegraphic fictions, Gaëlle Hippolyte and Lina Hentgen have been developing a series of work of sculpture and ordering of volumes, combining references to modernity and to spectacle that serve as a prelude to an investigation of the place and of its uses.

The projects combine, in a recurrent way, volumes, drawings, installations, in a topographic formula very similar to an urban industrial landscape’s. The different propositions usually invite the spectator on a journey that is an implicit reference to the modern city, the industry and labour. The different installations communicate and offer a space composed of tiny islands.

With Gaëlle Hippolyte and Lina Hentgen, the images of a factory are as many representations of the illusion of progress and of human condition. Those images evolve from a search of the plastic effect to an account of a story and a critical examination of the facts. The models, the full-scale installations offer a postmodern and mechanic still life, inviting us into a fiction made up of images.

The sculptures-objects are also an evocation of the industrial and utopic photography of the end of the nineteenth century, or more recently of Bernd and Hilla Becher. Questioning progress and the hegemony of industrialisation, the installations and sculptures can be walked around but are impenetrable, giving an illustration to Auguste Blanqui’s observation of the modern man’s condition: “The same monotony, the same immobility... The universe repeats itself endlessly and paws the ground in place. In infinity, eternity performs — imperturbably — the same routines.”

Founded in 2001, 40mcube is an exhibition space, an office of organization for contemporary art projects and a studio for the fabrication of works of art, based in Rennes (France). 40mcube’s principal activity is art production, where there exists a close interaction with the artist through all aspects of the process including its feasibility, technique, fabrication, up until the presentation and public mediation.

This process of production, from expositions to mediation, is made through a reflection on contemporary art, which is further shown through 40mcube’s published editions. Edited through a collaboration with partners of editing houses and distributors, these publications are available in bookstores.

40mcube has developed several different sectors that act as a part of the organization: 40mcube – exposition; 40mcube – edition; 40mcube AV, which co-produces with the audiovisual sector of artists’ videos; 40mcube – espace public, which works with artistic projects taking place in a public space, notably the project Chantier public and the operation Nouveaux commanditaires created by the Fondation de France.

40mcube occupies an industrial building that includes an exhibition space of 170m², an office, a documentation room, a studio for artists in residence, which all exists on a plot of 1100m² divided into three sections: a courtyard, a patio, and a garden. Considered a public place, this exterior site will be used to house artistic projects with the same statute as the exhibitions as well as works of a more permanent nature, which will eventually lead to the creation of an urban sculpture park.
