Dr. Christopher Lynch, a member of the gastroenter-ology team at Hillcrest Hospital South, will be at the Center on Friday, March 15, at noon in Activity Room 3 to discuss colon cancer and its impact on the lives of seniors.

Dr. Lynch will cover the various screening options, why screenings are important and how they help with prevention.

Ninety percent of colon cancers occur in those who are over age 50. Colorectal cancer, which includes colon and rectal cancer, is the second leading cause of cancer death in the United States, claiming the lives of almost 50,000 men and women annually.

Colorectal cancer is one of the deadliest of all cancers. However, with early detection, it is also one of the most preventable. The CDC reports that 60 percent of Americans between the ages of 50 and 75 receive regular screenings. According to the CDC, screenings pay off. Between 2003 and 2007, colorectal cancer screenings prevented 66,000 cases and saved 32,000 lives.

It is possible to prevent colon cancer and dying from the disease. Education, understanding risk factors and staying up-to-date on regular screenings are the keys to prevention. Learn more by attending this ses-sion with Dr. Lynch. A sign-up sheet is in the Center office.

Dr. Lynch earned his bachelor’s degree in biochemistry at the Univer-sity of Oklahoma and his medical degree from the University of Oklaho-ma College of Medicine. He completed his internship and residency at the University of Utah School of Medicine. He completed his fellowship in gastroenterology and hepatology at the University of Kansas Medical Center. How do you answer this question: “Where do you see yourself in three years?”

This can feel like a bit of a trick question, because if you are interviewing for a new position, sometimes the answer is “not in this job.” In couples counseling, the answer might be “not in this relationship.” And in life, maybe the best response is “at a bigger, better opportunity elsewhere.”

The Broken Arrow Senior Center is facing the same question, and our response will – and should – be framed with input from our current and future members.

Before you know it, there will be an additional BA Senior Center building across Main Street. This will give us the opportunity to better serve older adults in our community. And, quite frankly, we need the room now. Come to one of our Zumba classes and you’ll find space

is at a premium. At line dancing, you might have to share a line with someone else. Yoga and tai chi are other activities with lots of interest among our members.

Join in our crochet, quilting or crafting activities, and you’ll see that we’ve expanded beyond the four walls of the classroom. Some days the domino and card room is nearly standing room only. Our community events like Bunco sell out in record time.

We have to ask the question of where we see the Bro-ken Arrow Senior Center in three years, but we need to ask that question today. We have to set a course for how we are going to get there in 36 months in order to be prepared when that time arrives.

Without generous support from community volun-teers, our activities and programs wouldn’t be possible. From teaching a class to helping us improve and expand our services, there are many ways to get involved. If you have specific input on where you see the BA Senior Cen-ter in several years, please stop in and let me know your thoughts and ask your questions.

There’s so much energy and excitement about what the Broken Arrow Senior Center already is, where BASC is going and what it can be as an organization. I’m really looking forward to being part of it. I hope you are as well.

We appreciate the companies that offered their support in February

Don’t miss it!

BMI, or Body Mass Index, is a method of estimating a person’s body fat levels based on weight and height. It can be a key indicator of overall health.

There are increased health risks associated with hav-ing a high BMI, such as heart disease, hypertension, diabetes and vascular disease, and they apply across age groups. However, if you’re over 65 or approaching that age and still watching your weight, new findings suggest

you may be worrying about the wrong thing. It’s true that the obesity epidemic has taken a serious toll on America’s health, but, for older adults, maintaining muscle mass to ward off frailty is more important both to the length and quality of life than counting pounds.

Learn more on Wednesday, March 27, when students from the University of Tulsa nursing program will be at the Center to check both blood pressure and BMI.

The pharmacists from Quality First Pharmacy will be on hand to answer your questions on Friday, March 15 at 10 a.m. in Activity Room 3. Come prepared to get the answers to the questions you have always wanted to ask your pharmacist but never had the opportunity. For example:

How should I take this medication?Ask the pharmacist whether you are taking all of your

medications correctly and if they are being stored correct-ly. Some medications need to be taken at the same time each day or with food or liquids, while other medications should be taken on an empty stomach.

Is there anything that I should avoid while taking my medications?

Ask the pharmacist about what foods, drinks, over-the-counter drugs, vitamins and supplements may interfere with your current medications.

Are there major side effects or special instructions for the drug I am taking?

Your doctor may not go over every side effect when giving you a prescription. The printed information about contraindications, or cautions specific to the patient, and side effects that come with the medications can be overwhelming.

Is there a generic form of this medication that can save me money?

There may be a generic version of the drug you are tak-ing. Generic versions of medications are just as safe and effective as brand drugs but usually cost less. You may also inquire about a more cost-effective way to fill your prescriptions. The pharmacist may also know of other

programs available to help you save money. An important part of maintaining good health and

independence is taking your medication as directed by your doctor. Bring your medication bottles or an updated medication list so the pharmacist can give you a personal-ized review of your prescription regimen.

“Once you choose hope, anything’s pos-sible,” movie Superman Christopher Reeve was quoted as saying as he faced losing the use of his body.

Senior Center member Vicky Whitby chose hope and found that anything is indeed possible, even recovery from loss. She discovered this after becoming involved at the BA Senior Center.

Vicky was the primary caregiver for her hus-band in the months prior to his death. In the days and weeks that followed, she felt lost.

“After taking care of Darrell for so long, af-ter he died, I suddenly felt I had no purpose,” Vicky explained. “My days felt like they were 29 hours long. I felt like I was stuck in the mud.”

Just two months after her husband passed away, Vicky came to the Center and joined Bible study and eventually the singing group.

“The experience was life-changing,” she remembered. “I couldn’t wait to come back each time.”

Hope and healing slowly took hold. She discovered that through new friends and sharing activities with others,

she was finally giving herself the permis-sion to enjoy life again.

“I learned new ways to take care of myself at the Center,” Vicky said.

Vicky discovered a place of recovery, and at the heart of the recovery were many caring people.

“Someone in the singing group remem-bered the one-year anniversary of my husband’s death and reached out to me,” she recalled. “Another person invited me to join their family for the holidays. I was moved by the outpouring of support.”

Vicky’s experience at the Center serves as a valuable reminder.

“None of us are Superman,” said Vicky. “Hope and the possibilities that accompany it can be found even in the midst of loss. Whether it’s the loss of a loved one, a pet or our independence, recovery is possible with the help of other people. I know this firsthand, and I am certain that I would not be at this point of my grief recovery without the Senior Center.”

“This health fair is successful year after year because it draws a wide audience, and it’s the only event in Broken Arrow designed to help people 55+ and their families discover resources available to them,” according to Sean Simpson, president

of BASC. Nearly 100 informational and

health screening booths will be on-site, including displays by the presenting sponsor, Prairie House Assisted Living & Memory Care. In addition to offering valuable and timely information, there will be free health screenings.

“Preventive care is a primary focus of our programming,” Simpson said. “It is more than just helping raise awareness about the importance of

health screenings and healthy living. It’s our goal that older adults have ac-cess to information so they can make informed decisions about their physi-cal, emotional, social and intellectual health.”

Whether you are considering a

colonoscopy, aging in place, Medicare supplements, independent living or

long-term care, you will find the answers to all your ques-tions at the health & resource fair.

The goal of this event is to familiarize seniors and their families with products, services and resources available to them. This is the only event of its kind where companies have the op-portunity to meet face-to-face

with older adults in Broken Arrow. To learn more, visit www.baseniors.
