She left her work and stopped by the pharmacy to get some medication. She got back to her car and found that she had locked her keys in the car. She didn't know what to do, so she called home and told the babysitter what had happened. The babysitter told her that the fever was getting worse. She said, "You might find a coat hanger and use that to open the door." The woman looked around and saw an old rusty coat hanger that had been left on the ground, possibly by someone else who at some time had locked their keys in their car. She looked at the hanger and said, "I don't know how to use this." She bowed her head and asked God to send her help. Within five minutes a beat up old motorcycle pulled up, with a dirty, greasy, bearded man who was wearing an old biker skull rag on his head. The woman thought, "Is this who you sent to help me God?" But, she was desperate, so she was also very thankful. The man got off of his cycle and asked if he could help. She said, "Yes, my daughter is very sick. I stopped to get her some medication and I locked my keys in my car. I must get home to her. Please, can you use this hanger to unlock my car?" He said, "Sure." He walked over to the car, and in less than a minute the car was opened. She hugged the man and through her tears she said, "Thank You So Much! You are a very nice man." The man replied, "Lady, I am not a nice man. I just got out of prison today. I was in prison for car theft and have only been out for about an hour." The woman hugged the man again and with sobbing tears cried out loud, "Oh, thank you God! You even sent me a Professional!" What is a locksmith anyway?

To those in this world who have never had the privilege of needing a locksmith, they might not have any

concept of what a locksmith really does. Some will conjure up an image of an old fashioned lock and ancient

skeleton keys. The locksmith comes along and finds the right key and suddenly the lock is open like magic.

Today that image of a locksmith is outdated. Twenty-first century locksmiths are skilled sophiscated

craspeople who deal with a dizzying array of computer technologies that seem to change on a monthly

basis. A locksmith can deal with everything from a car with a transponder in the key to some control access

or panic hardware with electronic strike. We see everything going to electronics. Why even our key

machines are ge$ng more complicated with computer technology and a laser reader for key duplicaon.

Yes, the locksmith of today is in the know when it comes to technology, but the locksmith that thinks that

they can't learn "all that new stuff", will be le in the dust. Think about it...

Been to the meeng lately... We have several new faces and lots of fresh ideas to pass along to you.

Wish you were there. If for nothing else, come for all the neat stuff that is raffled off at each meeng. See

you there.

Joseph Bramah. Designed a round lock mechanism operated by a tubular key,

the key is inserted into the lock and the key depresses the sliders. When the

sliders match the slots in the key the lock can be turned. This original design

was patented on August 21st

, 1784 in the United Kingdom, it was granted the

original 14 years and was extended addional 14 years in June 2nd

, 1798.

This type of lock was extremely unique to the era thus gave it a higher level of

security and was installed by the upper class to protect their goods and

dwellings. How this lock works is, the key has slot cut into the barrel of the

key, the key is pushed onto the lock and the distance the slider moves within

the key aligns the shear line allowing the key to turn the lock.

What would you do?

This past month I ran a crossed an odd situaon, it was an older GM car

from the late sixes and they lost the keys… no big deal. I tear down the

column all the way to the big nut that holes the steering wheel onto the

sha. I grab my socket set and proceed to forcefully remove this nut. Aer

a few minutes I get the nut off and noce it was not the correct nut or

thread type for this vehicle. In fact the shas threads were stripped out.

In the above photo, I am si$ng in the front seat knowing that I cannot put

this steering wheel back on. The guy wants his car running (New keys) and

I am telling him that he needs the steering column replaced or repaired.

What would you do? If you thought that I would put it back together and

close my eyes to the whole thing… you’d be wrong. We ended up towing it

to a mechanic and they repair the column’s sha and installed the correct

nut and retainer.

What Lock Do I need to Prevent Lock Snapping?

If you’re going for a TS007 approved lock to combat lock snapping then it

has to be a 3 star approved lock. While there is another way (using a 2 star

handle or escutcheon and a 1 star cylinder, or the preferred opon of

ulizing a “Sold Secure Diamond” approved cylinder) if you want to go the

cylinder only route, which was the route the program was going, then it has

to be a 3 star.

No Menon of The Star Rang

There was unfortunately no menon of this star rang on the program,

although there was a picture shown of some alleged 3 star approved

cylinders. We felt it was something that had to be addressed, and have contacted the program

makers to highlight this. We can fully appreciate that when making a TV show it’s impossible to

include everything, especially with something as complex as tesng and standards for locks, but as

a 1 star cylinder has not been tested to protect against snapping, we felt it vital that this seemingly

small, but actually vital, bit of informaon be highlighted.

An Snap Lock Cylinders, Essenally TS007 has 3 levels associated with it.

1 star – for cylinders (basic approval, no tesng for snapping)

2 star – for handles and other door furniture (e.g. security escutcheons)

3 star – for cylinders (tested

for resistance to snapping)

The minimum criteria for

protecng against lock

snapping is to achieve at least

3 stars, either through the use

of a 3 star cylinder, or through

the use of a 1 star cylinder and

2 star handle or escutcheon.
