March 2009 President’s Report to the TRU Board of Governors News u TRU people take 13 spots in local magazine’s Power 50 List Thompson Life Magazine’s third annual Power 50 List hit newsstands earlier this month and included 13 faculty, administrators, students, alumni and coaches from a cross-section of the university. President Kathleen Scherf placed fourth on the Power List after only six months at TRU. Partnership builds community Under the leadership of TRU’s Residential Construction program TRU and high school students enrolled in the SD #73 Construction Trades Program will take the duplex project from footings to lock up over the next several months. The build is at 204 Park Street, near McDonald Park in North Kamloops. Canadian Studies Days BC’s most famous playwright, George Ryga, was showcased at TRU Canadian Studies Days 2009. The three day event sponsored by TRU’s Canadian Studies program and the TRU Community-University Research Alliance (CURA), was held in conjunction with Western Canada Theatre on March 23 – 25. Nine new scholarships available A critical need for trained administrative assistants in legal offices in Kamloops and other interior communities has led to the creation of nine entrance scholarships of $5,500 each are to be awarded to new Legal Administrative Assistant students at Thompson Rivers University this year. Human Resource student case team third in country Twenty-two of the top universities in the country competed in the two-day Excalibur Case Competition. TRU was represented by Human Resource majors Katie Tallon, Callie-Jo Duncan, Barbara Fraser, Fred Xhou and were coached by TRU SOBE Faculty Richard Roy and Andrew Fergus in the prestigious competition that tests the ability of students to integrate their understanding of HR theory with practical applications. Agreement signed between TRU and the BC Public Service Agency Dr. Kathleen Scherf, President and Vice-Chancellor of Thompson Rivers University and Lynda Tarras, the Head of the BC Public Service Agency, have officially signed a Memorandum of Understanding that will highlight career opportunities for TRU students and graduates in the years ahead in the BC Public Service. TRU and the National Centre for First Nations Governance sign MOU On March 6, Dr. Kathleen Scherf, President and Vice-Chancellor of Thompson Rivers University and Satsan, President National Centre for First Nations Governance signed an agreement establishing the framework for both organizations to work together to research, develop, and deliver appropriate programs and courses to enhance the governance and administrative skills of First Nations people. u u u u u u

Tourism Management Degree launched in MalaysiaThompson Rivers University has taken its highly regarded Bachelor of Tourism Management degree to Malaysia, where it will be offered in partnership with Nilai University College in Putra Nilai, a modern township located 40-minutes from the Kuala Lumpur city centre.

TRU World exec recognized as Canadian expert in International EducationCyndi McLeod, Associate Vice-President TRU World has been invited by the Canadian Embassy to be the Canadian expert at the International Dialogue on Education Berlin, a highly-regarded and influential seminar in Germany. The seminar is a joint initiative of the British Council Germany, the German Academic Exchange Service, the German-American Fulbright Commission, the Australian Group of Eight and the Canadian Embassy in Berlin, with the support of the Canadian Bureau for International Education. The theme for the April 30 event is ‘Exploring Difference – Positioning your Institution – Marketing and Branding.’

Dean of Trades & TechnologyLindsay Langill has been appointed to a five-year term as Dean of Trades & Technology. Formerly he was the Senior Lead for Program Standards and Examinations at the Industry Training Authority (ITA), the body that oversees all trades training in BC.

Dean of TourismDr. Harold Richins has been appointed as the next Dean of the School of Tourism and will begin a five-year term this May. Dr. Richins holds Bachelor and Master’s Degrees in business from the University of Oregon, where he majored in resort marketing and entrepreneurship. His PhD from James Cook University in Australia focused on decision-making, behavioural influences and management in tourism development.

Acting Dean of ScienceDr. Tom Dickinson will serve as Acting Dean of the Faculty of Science for the period May 1, 2009 to August 31, 2009. An Interim Dean will be appointed for the period September 1, 2009 to August 31, 2010 based on the outcome of a candidate search.

AchievementsKaren HofmannFaculty of Arts

Karen Hofmann has been nominated for the Dorothy Livesay Poetry award at the annual BC Book Prize for her collection of verse, Water Strider published by Frontenac House. The awards will be announced April 25.
