FEBRUARY PROGRAM REVIEW

QUILTS OF VALOR

and

RICK HARTZELL

By: Trevor Petersen

Photos by: Ben Boxleiter

In case you were unable to attend the last LLDO meeting you missed out. Our first group of speakers where members of a great cause called Quilts of Valor. Quilts of Valor designs, cuts, and sews quilts for veterans in all branches of our nation’s military. This national organization, to date has made and given over 150,000 quilts to veterans and their families including veterans at the Marshalltown Veterans Home and all across our great state. Each quilt is unique in its own way giving these veterans something that they can truly appreciate.

Our main speaker for the meeting was Rick Hartzell. Rick shared an awesome message with all the LLDO members; the most important part being to practice “The Rule of 15.” The Rule of 15 asks us to practice something for 15 minutes a day that we wouldn’t normally do or something we want to work on. This could be as simple as reading a book or going out and exercising. Doing this would make the goal of what we want to improve that much easier. Another idea he presented was to always have a positive mindset on yourself and your situation. With this mindset, anyone can overcome their hurdles in life. Finally, Mr. Hartzell’s message he shared was to always be a role model because whether you think so or not, someone out there looks up to you and your actions affect them.

Roseanne Anderson and Marvis Davis show a quilt made by Quilts of Valor program.

Giant Pandas By: Tyler Knutson

Did you know the giant panda is no longer an endangered species? They are now classified as “vulnerable.” This is due to the massive effort to breed the animal as well as the work of Chinese agencies to enforce poaching bans and expand forest reserves. The current figure is 1864 compared to the 1596 that were alive in 2003.

There are currently about 50 pandas living in captivity outside of China. Every panda is on loan from China as part of a program to research, breed, and spread awareness. In the United States you can find a total of 13 pandas living at one of four zoos; Memphis Zoo, San Diego Zoo, Zoo Atlanta, and Smith-sonian’s National Zoo. Since 2012, 7 pandas have been bred including two sets of twins in Atlanta.

Other recent movement around the endangered species list includes the mana-tee now being taken off as well as the bumblebee now being listed as endan-gered for the first time.

Fun Fact: Intern Tyler has seen giant pandas at the San Diego Zoo and a

manatee off the docks in Florida.

Quality Management System

One of the tools the Marshalltown Plant has chosen to use to help lead and drive sound processes is the ISO Quality Management System. The adoption of a quality management system is a strategic decision for an organization that can help to improve its overall performance and provide a sound basis for sustainable development initiatives. Benefits to the organization include some of the following: The ability to consistently provide products that meet customer and regulatory requirements; The ability to demonstrate conformity to the specified quality requirements; Facilitating opportunities to enhance customer satisfaction; Addressing risks and opportunities.

There are no requirements that our plant participate in the ISO standard. Some Lennox plants have adopted the standard and others have decided to govern their own processes. Our plant will use the ISO standard to ensure we are doing, and continue to do, the right things. You will soon be seeing a great deal of activity around reviewing our current processes and implementing necessary changes to meet a new standard. Currently we are certified under ISO 9001:2008. By the end of 2017 we will need to become certified to the new standard of 9001:2015. There are some significant changes to the new standard that we will have to adapt to. There are changes to the structure and terminology of the new standard. Content will be revised and more of a focus on risk-based thinking. The good news, the Quality group lead by Melinda Young and Tracy Leavy has been working on this for a while now. They have attended training classes to understand the changes associated with the standard and have put together a solid plan to implement this before the end of the year. They will quickly need your departments help. Below is a high level outline of how the timing will go: Conduct gap analysis of current system vs. 2015 standard – complete by 3-1-17 Finalize updates to QMS utilizing gap analysis – complete by 7-31-17 Management review and approval – complete by 8-15-17 Train internal auditors, management, others – complete by 8-21-17 Conduct internal audit to new standard – complete by 10-01-17 Review Internal audit, modify as necessary – complete by 10-15-17 Recertify to new 2015 revision – complete by 12-01-17.

Unless you are really tuned in to it, a quality management system does not stand out day to day but rather is working behind the scenes to ensure we are moving in the defined direction. As we move forward imple-menting the new ISO 9001:2015 standard, we all will have the opportunity to review our department’s man-agement systems and adapt to necessary changes. The Quality group will be coordinating the implementa-tion and thanks you ahead of time for your efforts and participation.

NOTES FROM THE NURSE

Heart Health By: Andi Cline

Did you know that February was chosen to be Heart Health Month so it would coincide with Valentine’s Day? Hearts are everywhere and Valentine’s Day serves as a reminder to take care of one of the vital organs of the body. Heart disease is the number one cause of death among Americans and it accounts for nearly a quarter of all deaths in women. There are many things that you can do to help prevent heart disease or decrease your chances of developing it, but first you need to recognize what puts you at risk for heart disease.

Risk factors can include high blood pressure, high cholesterol, smoking, and obesity. These are all things that you can help control with diet, exercise, and regular medical checkups that include having your blood work drawn. Other non-controllable factors that can increase the risk of heart disease are age, family history, preeclampsia, and gestational diabetes.

Another way of assessing if you are at risk for heart disease is to determine what your heart age is. On average Americans have a heart that appears and functions seven years older than thier actual age. The goal is to have a heart that is the same age or younger than your actual age. The CDC broke down the percentage of adults who have a heart age of greater than five years according to state. In Iowa that accounts for approximately 40% of the population of adults aged 30-74 who have never had a heart attack before.

If you want to see what your heart age is, the CDC has a heart age calculator that you can access through this link: https://www.cdc.gov/vitalsigns/cardiovasculardisease/heartage.html

I calculated my heart age and the result was 38 (younger than my actual age). I then calculated my age as if I was a smoker and the result was 48 (older than my actual age). I changed only one risk factor and my heart age increased by 10 years! Think about how having multiple risk factors would increase your heart age. I encourage you all to get your heart age calculation. It is a very easy way to assess if you could possibly have a greater risk of heart disease.
