Laura President’s Message

Jose Rodriguez Lopez, Volunteer Board President In August our President and CEO Mitch Carson announced to employees, physicians and volunteers that he will be leaving LUH.

On behalf of the Volunteers and the Board I want to say how thankful we are for having the opportunity to work alongside Mitch in making LUH a better place and to offer more services. The time and effort that Mitch has devoted to the Volunteers is in a class by itself. His dedication will not be forgotten.

The Board is inviting Mitch to our October 11th, 2017 Board Meeting. All Volunteers are welcome. We are creating a PowerPoint presentation for him.

If you have any pictures of Mitch with Volunteers, old or recent, please drop them off in the Volunteer Office. It would be great if we could include pictures he may not have seen. All pictures will be returned after a digital copy is made.

In the near future the Board will be gathering feedback from Volunteers in different formats such as emails, letters, surveys, etc. We are always looking for ways to grow and improve the Volunteer Program at LUH. Your responses are very important for both LUH and for you individually. We all want a program that benefits all of us. You are the best source to tell us how to do that. We will review all information received and use it to strategize for the future. Please take the time to provide your feedback.

Thank you all for a wonderful Used Book Sale and Scrub Sale last month! We couldn't do it without our wonderful Volunteers.

SEPTEMBER 2017

A Message from Mitchell Carson, President & CEO It is with very mixed emotions I announce that I will be leaving Centura Health and Longmont United Hospital with my last day being Tuesday, October 31, 2017. When LUH joined Centura in 2015, I committed to leading the hospital through the important steps of this transition. Even though there have been several challenges along the way, I feel LUH is now better positioned to meet the health care challenges ahead. I believe my departure to be a natural part of the transition and will allow our new leadership the best opportunity to build a solid and successful team for this hospital. The 16 years I have spent at Longmont United Hospital have been some of the most enjoyable of my career. As a team, we have consistently improved the health of our community. Together, we have developed and expanded almost all of our major clinical service lines and developed significant physician and community partnerships. I am extremely pleased with all we have achieved. LUH is a remarkable place; one that truly puts the patient first and always strives for excellence, compassion and patient satisfaction. I am honored to have had the privilege to work with such an incredibly talented and caring group of associates, physicians, and volunteers. It is because of this special culture that I am confident LUH will continue to grow and achieve great things for this community and the patients we serve. During my remaining days at LUH, I will be working diligently with our current team to fill our Chief Medical Officer position and help familiarize our new Chief Nursing and Operating Officer, Craig Luzinski, with our system, hospital, and leadership team. Centura Health has already initiated a nation-wide search for my successor and plans to have my position filled by late fall. It has been an honor to have worked alongside each of you and I am incredibly proud of our organization. I wish this organization only the best and I look forward to watching the bright future ahead for Centura Health and LUH.

Craig Luzinski Named Chief Nursing and Operating Officer for Longmont United Hospital

I am pleased to announce that Craig Luzinski, DSL, MSN, RN has accepted the role of chief nursing and operating officer at Longmont United Hospital. He will join us at LUH on September 5, 2017. Craig has previously held roles as a Chief Nursing Officer at Poudre Valley Hospital in Fort Collins, Colorado and Chief Operating Officer at Cheyenne Regional Medical Center in Cheyenne, Wyoming. Most recently, Craig served as the Vice President of Performance Optimization for Cheyenne Regional Medical Center where he led initiatives in cost reduction, employee engagement, quality performance and operational efficiency, and helped to create a culture that values creativity and innovation.

In his new role as Chief Nursing and Operating Officer, Craig will oversee all inpatient and outpatient nursing services, education and staff development, care coordination, palliative care and perioperative services at LUH. He will manage operations, planning, quality and financial activities and outcomes of these departments while engaging our staff and working to improve patient experience. Craig will be located at LUH and will report to the hospital’s CEO.

On August 17th, the Spiritual Care Team provided a

place to remember the events of August 12th in

Charlottesville. The vigil was attended by

associates, volunteers and community members.

From the Chaplain’s Office

Archie Stevenson

Commissioned Ruling Elder,

lay Presbyterian Minister

It is hard to believe but, in any worship service, national statistics tell us that one person in three in that service has been affected in some way by Domestic Violence (DV)! Not all are victims, they are relatives, friends or acquaintances of victims. That means that most of us have had contact with one or more victims. How to recognize someone in that situation? Listen! Look! Medical staff receive some training in recognizing potential victims – e.g. women who return too often to the Emergency Department with the same or similar problems, bruises, broken bones, etc. and often say “I walked into a door”, or “I tripped and fell”, etc. It takes, on average, eight attempts to ”escape” – lack of money, a safe place to go, etc. - before they can make it safely. Some young people leave home because they, or usually Mom, are being physically abused by Dad. In Denver up to 1000 young people are on the streets on any given night. Many are victims of DV and many end up being Trafficked within two days of being on the streets. For information and/or help: in Longmont contact: LEVI (Longmont Ending Violence Initiative), Blue Sky Bridge, Longmont Police. A major educational resource is the “Faith Trust Institute” website. What to do? Get educated. Next month, October, is Domestic Violence Awareness month – Ask your religious leader to preach on the topic. As lay minister, Archie provides communion at Noon on Wednesdays for the nondenominational service at LUH.
