AUTUMN 2016 President’s Message Dear Members, Thank you for your support as I am honored to have been elected Midvale Country Club’s President. As I dive into my first year as Presi- dent, I find myself amazed at the complexity of our club. Our restaurant and bar operates at a volume of two million dollars, while golf operation adds another half million to the equation. The swimming pool, tennis courts, locker rooms, pro shop, and golf course pump stations also add to the operations complexities. I am grateful for your Board of Governors whom are each assigned to one of these departments to assist management in guiding our service and amenities onward. I also am very proud of our dedicated management team who continue to commit countless hours and tireless energies to the betterment of the membership and country club. All in all, we have a very special club, one which will be available for many generations to enjoy. We all share in our commitment to belong, but know that our membership value certainly outshines the obligation. I also appreciate both our social/pool/tennis and our golf members, whom equally dedicate themselves to the betterment of our club. In an environment of “free agency,” members often have to reconsider and re- commit themselves to their club. While tempting membership packages might catch your attention, I am hopeful that our history of membership satisfaction, golf course conditions, social activities, and family friendly atmosphere will ensure your continued dedication to and at Midvale Country Club for years to come. In July, our fiscal 2015 financial audit was completed, and on July 17th, our un-biased auditors, Bonadio & Co., shared their findings with all in attendance at our Annual Financial Membership Meeting. While operations netted a slightly better financial performance than the prior year, there was still a small deficit remaining at year’s end. It has been the belief of your Board of Governors to assess a minimal fee to cover the shortage rather than ignoring it, ensuring the long term financial success of the club. While we all enjoy our club today and tomorrow, it is also our responsibility to ensure that our families are able to enjoy Midvale Country Club for many years to come. It is my pleasure to congratulate our 2016 Golf Club Champions: Men’s Club Champion: Tom Edwards, Women’s Club Champion: Dana Morales, Couples Club Champions: Kevin & Julie Stepanoff and John & Maureen Hall, Senior Club Champion: Steve Holmes, Super Senior Club Champion: Jim Barletta, plus our Junior Club Champions: Jake Sartini & Jake Leone. President’s MessageDear Members,

Thank you for your support as I am honored to have been elected Midvale Country Club’s President. As I dive into my first year as Presi-dent, I find myself amazed at the complexity of our club.

A Message from Your General ManagerW ow, what a fantastic summer! Let the record show that the Sum-

mer of ’16 was one of the best to date. Combining a record-break-ing number of high temperature days with a below-average level of daily precipitation made it a summer to remember. Every department at Midvale CC ran at peak demand as the near-perfect weather added to our operation.

While our summer was awesome, this is the time of year when it is sad to see the swimming pools covered for the winter and a bare patio terrace as our seasonal patio furniture has been moved into storage. I can only hope that when you look out onto the covered pools and empty surrounds, that you are able to reflect upon a number of great summer memories of this past summer. It appears as though the warmer weather is going to continue well into fall, allowing you to enjoy the golf course deep into the season. Just keep a close eye on your golf ball direction as it is only a matter of time before the leaves begin to fall.

With the school year underway and many of our Midvale families transitioning from a relaxing summer mode into their daily active school routines, it is only a matter of time before you need a break. Midvale Country Club is proactively anticipating that much-needed weekly break as I am excited to announce our Thursday Family Pizza Night. Dress is casual as Midvale’s newest piece of kitchen equipment, The Turbo Chef Pizza Oven, takes center stage to prepare your custom pizza in a record cooking time of two minutes. It truly is a remarkable oven and will be busy during our featured Thursday Pizza Night. More information is lo-cated within the newsletter, so plan ahead or just stop by with your family to enjoy a casual night out.

This is an exciting time for Midvale Country Club as our Membership

SunshineGet Well cards were sent Mr. Sergio Esteban as

he recovered from surgery, and to Mrs. Florence Sarachan.

Our sympathies go out to Mr. and Mrs. Martin Smith on the passing of her father, and also to Mr. and Mrs. Ned Amyot on the passing of her father.

Committee has launched a Fall New Member joining incentive. This special incentive allows for a reduction in the one-time initiation fee, along with a few months during their first winter to get acclimated to the club and our many amenities. Available to the first twenty new members, it is surely going to go quick. Midvale Country Club is happy to wel-come the following new members: Michael and Margaret Schmidt, Thomas Beam and Sherry Scarfone, Aaron and Susan Anselm, and William and Lynette Kosachook. In addition, we welcome Bill and Kimberly Stathopoulos back into our membership family. Please join me in welcoming these new members to Midvale CC. The Membership Committee is encouraged by the recent high level of membership interest and thankful to all of our current members for being such loyal ambassadors of the club.

To ensure that our members, both new and existing, stay active during this autumn, I am happy to announce that you will find quite the line-up of activities. I encourage you to mark the events in your calendars to ensure that you do not miss out on any. We plan on keeping you busy all year long.

Our newly promoted Executive Chef, Marcus Schulz, is also becom-ing more experienced in his culinary setting as we aim to introduce more farm-to-table concept entrees for your future enjoyment. Now that Chef Marcus has settled in from a busy summer season, we are excited to announce the roll-out of his first new dinner menu. The new dinner menu will be tested to the membership on Friday, November 25th as we collect feedback and showcase many new dishes. I encourage you to plan on making advanced reservations for this date as it certainly will be deliciously exciting.

In closing, I would like to sincerely thank the membership for their continued support of the club and co-workers. It is a rewarding experi-ence for the staff to witness service excellence and membership satisfac-tion, as you will always be our top priority. Exceeding your expectations will continue to be our goal even as they grow. Thank you once again for your loyalty to your club!

Sincerely,

Rich Marr, General Manager

Executive Chef’s CornerI have learned so much in my first year as Executive Chef. It has been

the most rewarding experience of my culinary career, by far. It feels so much better when a member or guests pulls me aside to rave about their meal. On the other hand, it hits home when a member or guest share their dissatisfaction as well. I have instilled our club’s service cul-ture throughout the kitchen, taking every comment very seriously.

I am fortunate to be mentored by such a service-oriented and expe-rienced General Manager, as he has taught me the importance of build-ing a successful culinary team who shares the same mission and values. We have worked together on menus, discussed the importance of labor costs and cost of food, just to name a couple. I am confident that each year I will continue to improve my skill set and I am grateful to Midvale Country Club for granting me this opportunity. You have my continued dedication as I look forward to cooking many meals for you and your families to enjoy.

I am excited to roll out our new dinner menu as you will find a variety of new seasonal entrees combined with a couple of old favorites. I encourage you to make a reservation as you will experience this new menu first hand. Our goal is to continue to offer value pricing to our membership, as you are most deserving.

In closing, I encourage your family to attend the many fall and win-ter activities as I am equally excited to draft menus for each of them. One of my highlights is our Gingerbread House Night, whereas I am welcomed onto the floor to assist families with their houses and designs. Midvale Country Club is truly a very special place. Happy Thanksgiving, Hanukkah and/or Merry Christmas to all.

Golf NewsGolf Course CornerWhat a whirlwind golf season! A number of active long-standing

members have stated “Midvale Country Club has NEVER been in better condition than it was this year!” This is a true testament to the hard work and discipline the Grounds Committee and staff have put forth. Members should be proud to know that their club is being boasted as one of the best-conditioned courses of the season. Superintendent Nevin Hess, and his Assistant, Derek Brunette, remained focused all year on the consistent conditions and anticipating any cultivational concerns. Con-gratulations on a job well done as it is truly appreciated.

As the season transitions into autumn and next into winter, the focus is turned to winterizing our state-of-the-art irrigation system and quickly removing the fallen leaves from the golf course. Over 1,000 labor hours are projected to be dedicated to leaf removal as it is a top priority for late season golfers and to ensure a tightly buttoned-up course for the winter. Please note that the restroom shelter on Hole #15 will be closed for the season to ensure appropriate winterization.

A couple of fall projects are in the works as well. Some minor drainage work on Hole #3 is being addressed, as well as some silt removal for our silt pond. These two projects should keep the crew busy as we approach the preventative maintenance program scheduled indoors during the winter.

Congratulations to the winning team in this year’s Greenskeeper Revenge Closing Tournament: Tony Soprano and Carlo Callea with a winning score of 63! For those members unable to participate, the prepa-ration for this event included some of the most unique tee locations and pin placements that one might ever see.

Please remember that the golf course will remain open for as long as the weather allows. As nighttime temperatures drop below freezing, be on the lookout for FROST as it will delay the opening of the golf course. Members are reminded to check in at the Golf Shop prior to play to ensure that the course is free of frost and open before starting play.

Autumn Seasonal Rule Updates:Non-Certificate members are now permitted to tee off on weekends

before 8:00 a.m. in addition to the after 9:30 a.m. rule.Fivesomes are allowed beginning October 1st for the remainder of

this year.

Weekday Guest Day PolicyFor the convenience of the members and to allow for a completed

18 hole round of golf, members will be allowed to bring a guest anytime during the weekdays. Please phone the golf shop ahead to ensure a timely round.

Frost DelaysAs the weather begins to become colder, the opportunity of frost

increases. Because frost is unpredictable, we encourage you to phone ahead to check the status of the golf course. Due to an extended Frost Delay, play may begin using a modified shotgun start. This will be done as a convenience to the members suspended from play during a delay.

This is also the perfect time to have our professional staff check your golf clubs for worn grips, bent shafts or other flaws in need of repair before the start of the next season.

Thank You to our 2016 Women’s Association Officers

EXECUTIVE OFFICERS:

COMMITTEE MEMBERS:

Amy Miller, Luba Drouin, Jane Duke, Anette Fantanzo, Ann Michelle Garrison, Catherine Toy, and Linda Vazzana

Treasurer: Carol Yancey Secretary: Melinda Godfrey

Women’s Association News by Women’s Association’s President, Juleen Squires

Our Midvale Women’s Association mission to enhance the wom-en’s and children’s experiences at the club has been a consistent

theme and goal for many years. I am honored to follow the footsteps of many great Midvale CC advocates and I am confident that with their support, our mission will continue to blossom to new heights.

Reflecting upon last summer, I find myself smiling as the pool was near perfect and the weather cooperated more than ever. Our Poolside Yoga attracted over thirty women requesting additional yoga classes for next season. The Ladies Cocktail Party was also a huge suc-cess, with the guidance of Ann-Michelle Garrison as she implemented a tapas-themed cuisine surrounded by the ambiance of live entertain-ment. It was the perfect event enjoyed by record-breaking attendance. Kathy Wissler did the legwork to reach our newest members, offering a personal invitation, which resulted in our increased attendance.

Our Summer Tennis Program took a bounce for the better as Linda Vazzana and Tennis Professional Ron Dyson paired up for a busy season. Our success was evident as pick-up games were being made throughout the entire summer. It was great to see our tennis courts as active as they were. As summer ends, I encourage our tennis players to transition to our Platform Tennis Leagues, allowing for fall and win-ter fun as well.

Success continued to spill over into our golf course as Co-Chairs Luba Drouin and Jane Duke took charge of our tournament schedule.

Special thank you to Annette Fantanzo for organizing our Interclub league; Marcy Lazio and Betty Podlesh for organizing our Breast Can-cer Coalition of Rochester Charity event; Lisa Fiorie for the Cowgirl Guest Day; Robin Bullock, Terry Schmidt, and Annette Fantanzo for our Olympic theme Guest Day; Liz Rank for detailing our Cobblev-ale Cup Challenge; and all of the women who participated in these events! Special Congratulations to our Club Champion: Dana Morales and Invitational Champions: Maggie Flynn and guest Ali Fenton.

This year’s Charity Fashion Show also took a bit of a change, mov-ing the event to a weekday evening rather than the traditional week-end afternoon. Congratulations to chairwoman Lisa Fiorie and her diligent committee for ensuring our continued success, even with the above transition. While the final donation tally is still being calculated, nearly one hundred and seventy women attended this year’s function in support of our selected charity, Angels of Mercy.

I am proud to be your Woman’s Association President, as I am able to witness TEAMWORK, CARING, PASSION, and PRIDE firsthand. Midvale Country Club is very fortunate to have such a talented associa-tion who will continue to strive for bigger successes to come.

Sincerely,Juleen Squires

Co-Worker Stars ProgramIf you are a member who enjoys good amenities and great service, then we ask you to assist

us in recognizing our excelling staff members.

Midvale Country Club’s Co-Worker Star is awarded to two co-workers from the Grounds Department, Derek Brunette and David Blumerick.

Derek joined our team as Assistant Superintendent over four years ago and has been Nevin’s right hand ever since. Going above and beyond is Derek’s normal as he is

committed to becoming the best in his profession. Midvale Country Club is fortunate to have Derek a part of their team.

Our second co-worker is Dave Blumerick, Irrigation technician. David is the one alongside of Derek digging the holes and fixing the irrigation pipes in what typically is a pool of mud. David also volunteers to assist with our annual Hayride and even helped

assemble our pool filters. David has been employed at Midvale since 2002 and has become one of our key co-workers in our Grounds Department.

JOIN US AS WE CONGRATULATE BOTH OF THESE CO-WORKERS FOR THEIR BEYOND THE STARS PERFORMANCE.

In an ongoing process to grow our service levels to new heights, Members are being asked to assist with recognizing excellent efforts from our staff. Anytime in which you feel that a co-worker has gone above and beyond your service expectations, you are asked to e-mail your service story to [email protected]. Each month service stories will be

reviewed and one will be selected for the Star of the Month. This co-worker will be recognized in the monthly newsletter and will receive a Service Excellence Stipend.

This program can only be successful if our staff delivers and you follow up with an e-mail. We thank you in advance for your assistance.

With your help, this program will build morale, generate co-worker loyalty, create a competitive edge and also help make Midvale a fun place to work.

All of the above equates to Membership satisfaction!
