About the President

Richard Davenport was appointed president of Minnesota State University,Mankato by the Board of Trustees of the Minnesota State Colleges andUniversities on February 22, 2002. He assumed his responsibilities as theUniversity’s 12th president on July 1, 2002.

Prior to joining Minnesota State Mankato, Dr. Davenport served as provostand vice president for academic affairs at Central Michigan University, inMt. Pleasant, Michigan. He joined Central Michigan University in 1990and while there held various senior positions and served as tenured fullprofessor. He served as dean of the graduate school and associate vicepresident for academic affairs at Western State College of Colorado inGunnison, Colorado for four years. From 1980 to 1986 he was chairpersonand professor in the Winona Tri-College/University Cooperative Programin Communicative Disorders which included Winona State and St. Mary’sUniversities and the College of St. Teresa. He was an assistant professor inspeech science, pathology and audiology at St. Cloud State Universityfrom 1977 to 1980. Dr. Davenport began his university career at IowaState University in 1970 and continued there until his appointment in theformer Minnesota State University System.

During his teaching experience, Dr. Davenport received several awards forteaching excellence and in his administrative roles has emphasized teachingexcellence, scholarly work, and promotion of student learning as primarygoals for faculty.

Dr. Davenport earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in speech and hearingdisorders at the University of Nebraska, Kearney, his Masters of Sciencedegree in speech and hearing science at Colorado State University, andhis doctor of philosophy degree in Higher Education Administration at IowaState University.

He currently serves on the boards of the Center for Rural Policy andDevelopment and the Greater Mankato Economic Development Corporation.
